I cannot drive. Therefore my review is tainted somewhat with the fact that I don't know which button does that thing that makes the car go "vvvrrrruuummmm" or how to get the water to spray up on the windscreen thing... Ok I know a bit but not enough to have a licence. However my auntie and uncle have travelled from Canada and provided me with a lift back to Enniskillen so in that respect I can tell you a bit. Avis is located just up from the bus station as well as at both Airports and at the ferry port so upon entering Belfast (unless you parachute) you're probably going to find one. The renting is cheap (according to my knowledgable auntie) so in that respect it is good. They had no problems with the staff or the car so all in all it was fine. I had one day in Belfast to drive up to the Antrim coast which had been a lifelong dream of mine. I pre-paid for a rental in Belfast and had the car about 15 minutes before I clipped another car's mirror. I was told I needed to not only return the car immediately, but that Avis would be unable to issue me another car. The car I was driving had no damage, other than a scrape to the side mirror. On top of that, Avis wouldn't refund me the day's rental fee I already paid. Ultimately, I paid about $150 to drive a rental car for 15 minutes. The agent on the phone recommended I return the car to the airport (instead of the location around the corner from my hotel) since there were other agencies nearby and they might be able to rent me a car. All of the other agencies were out of cars, so I needed to spend an additional 10 euro on top of that to take a taxi back to my hotel. AND to add insult to injury, calling Avis to let them know I had been in an accident was roaming on my phone so the 30 minutes on the phone cost me another $10 on top of that. This was an awful experience and not only will I not rent from Avis again, I'll be recommending to my work that we no longer use Avis as our provider of choice moving forward. The littlest bit of courtesy would have helped here, but there was zero understanding or compassion on Avis' end. First car I received broke down after second day. Management was unresponsive and once I did contact them the person would not commit to get us another car. Just left vehicle at hotel and rented from another company. Drive by 3 days later and Avis still had not reclaimed broken down car. Very disappointed with Avis. I returned the car with a scrape in the front bumper. It was either damaged when I picked it up from airport (no, I didn't do the walk around) or hit when i had it parked. Yes, I have responsibility, but the damage was minor and the cost - more than £500 - was immediately applied to my credit card. No negotiations. No sympathy. No breakdown or justification of the expenses. Nothing. I'm a Preferred Avis member from the U.S. I tried the U.S. customer service office, which said there was nothing they could do because the Belfast office is a separate franchise. So it's my fault they have franchise agreements with no quality control??? Ruined my first trip to see the town where my mother grew up. Goodbye Avis. read more
