Avenyn or Kungsportsavenyen which is the street's name is the long boulevard and tourist route in Gothenburg.
In one end you have Kungsportsplatsen which also offers shopping and food/coffee/drinks. In the other end you have Poseidon and Götaplatsen. Imo not the most exciting place. It is grey, concrete and empty. There are indeed theters and restaurants - but nothing outdoors really. In December every year this place comes to life though with spectacular light show!
As far as restaurants, shops and pubs/bars are concerned they are crowded and most locals I know avoid them. Not much of shopping even if there are stores as well. Not the little cute alternative shops though. I would stay at any of the hotels located here.
I am quite satisfied with the pubs on this street though, but less fond of the restaurants. Summertime it is impossible I-M-P-O-S-S-I-b-l-e to get a decent seat too late in the afternoon if the sun is out. Also the only good seats are as always the outer ones, or else you get seated more like a "biergarten"seating - all in a row.
Many of the restaurants along Avenyn for some reason seem to be American style - Hard Rock, O'Learys and Joe Farrelii.
If you are looking for coffee (and cake to complete the Swedish fika) this is definitely not the place to look for them at. There are only a few and i wouldnät call them the best in the city. Rather head to Haga and Linnégatan and the streets around Domkyrkan (Dome).
I understand this is a must for tourists, but I would recommend you to turn right (if you come from Kungsportsplatsen) at Vasagatan and keep walking until you get to Haga and Linné to see other parts of Gothenburg. read more
