I know lots of people who would give Avenue Road Providore's a higher star rating than I have; it's a staple source of family meals and 'bring a plate' quiches that half of Mosman seems to resort to. It's sturdy, uncomplicated food, available fresh or frozen, with a delicious looking range of cakes and slices to boot.
So what lets them down? I simply can't go past the Saturday lunch for which we were all craving sausage rolls ... the delicious, juicy, meaty ones with crisp flaky pastry. There were none on display, but they assured us they had some and packed them into a bag for us to take home. But it was all wrong! A sausage - yep, a whole skin-covered Frankfurter-like sausage - sticking out the ends of a blanket of flat uninteresting shortcrust.
A huge disappointment - one that I am probably taking an irrationally long time to get over. I may venture back, but in a suburb that is back-to-back deli and prepared food options, it's 'rolled' down my list. So sad. read more
