In the past year, I am having difficulty in landing a good haircut. It has to do in the HK hair hierarchy system of creative director, top stylist, senior stylist, artistic stylist, stylist...gopher!
On my last three haircuts, including to Aveda on this trip, as I made a proper appointment for "creative director" a week in advance (thinking I will pay top dollar to get a great haircut by a seasoned professional), upon arrival, I get punted to someone lower. Upon arrival to Aveda, I was told the creative director was not available. So I am then thinking in my head, "Why did you take my reservation a week ago then for the creative director?" Not only is the creative director not available, neither is a top stylist, which is the next level down OK..so now this haircut that I will have is being teed up poorly for me and for the stylist who ultimately is going to cut my hair. I know they are not who I wanted and they are made to feel inferior, because they know that they are not who I wanted either. That is just a poorly thought out business model.
A nice woman named Dibby (I might have the spelling wrong), who is a senior stylist, ultimately provided me a haircut for $720. Did my hair get cut? Yes. But again, if you walk into a store and think you are going to get steak, but then indeed only have the option of a pork cutlet, ham sandwich or salad, your expectations are kind of blown. It is not the pork cutlet's fault, like it was not Dibby's fault. Dibby was fine and did an OK job, but upon booking my appointment for creative director level haircut, I am clearly looking for better than fine. Again, this is not Dibby's error, it is Aveda reception and/or their booking model.
Aveda simply needed to convey upon booking what was available and what is not. That simple. It gives me the consumer the option to make choices on moving dates or alternating levels of stylists, versus having this happen the day I walk in expecting a service I signed up for.
The salon itself is centrally located and easy to find. It is in decent shape, although the fixtures, floors, walls, bathroom are showing signs of age and time. I kind of trust the Aveda brand and my haircut experience was a touch of a letdown. I would not say to not try this salon, maybe be firmer than me when securing an appointment to guarantee what you book and who you book with. read more
