I have been going to Dr. Yu for more than two years now and can confidently say she is one of the best (if not the best) medical professionals that I have ever visited, regardless of field. And yes, all of those things are absolutely true. However, what makes Dr. Yu next-level excellent is the personalized care that she gives each of her patients. Not once have I waited more than 5 minutes past my scheduled appointment time, nor has she ever double-booked me with any one else. I'd meant to write a review of her practice long ago, but today, after reading the saddening news of Cecil the Lion, knew that it was time. And so not only am I writing this review, I am also invoking the Yelp gods to grant me the authority to bestow her practice what was previously only a mythical existence, the 6-STAR RATING. 1) Dr. Yu's office is as clean and sparkling as she is friendly and professional. 2) Dr. Yu is very thorough, and always seems to care about finding the best solution for her patients. 3) Dr. Yu's staff is polite and punctual. 4) Dr. Yu takes great measures to inflict as little pain as possible (or perhaps it's just that she does a very convincing job of "feeling" her patients' pain!). 5) Dr. Yu does not hunt animals for sport. Avant Dentistry deserves the top rating possible in every way. I had to have a major dental procedure done as a result of childhood injury (3 extractions, bone grafting, 2 implants), and I was recommended to Dr. Yu for my bridge/crowns by my surgeon. Over a period of about two years, I had numerous (at least a dozen) appointments at Avant Dentistry, from making a flipper, putting temporary crowns with periodic adjustments, and finally making permanent crowns. Dr. Yu is extremely detail-oriented, and there were more than a few times when I felt that she took extra time and care where other dentists may have cut corners or not go the extra mile to ensure a better end result. Before deciding on this dental team for my procedure, I did check with various dentists in the area, and although she was not the cheapest option, I strongly believe that the value for money in her work was unrivaled. Other places that were marginally cheaper suggested that the whole procedure could be done within a week; she suggested about a year. Since the procedure was completed, I have gone back for periodic check-ups and cleanings, and am always blown away by the consistent level of service and professionalism. The office is spotless, all the staff are pleasant, everything is state of the art, and everyone there is friendly and warm. The location is also perfect, very close to Friendship Heights Metro Station. I am sure I will continue to go to Avant Dentistry for many more years, and I hope you will too. read more

It comes across very clearly that she is very well educated and keeps up on current developments, that she has a very strong network of specialist colleagues for referrals (I needed a root canal and the endodontist I was referred to was excellent as well), and that she really care about her patients. She was gentle, kind, and put me at ease from the moment I sat down in the chair. Not only did she address all of my concerns, but broke everything down into easy-to-understand language and explained every step of her procedure. She was incredibly thorough with her cleaning and gave me tips for how to achieve the same results at home. She truly sees her patients as individual people with specific needs and desires. I love this dental office! I'm someone that has had a long time fear of going to the dentist. Many of you can agree with me that going to the dentist is not very high on your list of fun things to do. Well I decided the new year was coming around and I need to do better and not only have a healthy external body but also internal (teeth, etc). Well I found Dr Yu through a referral from a friend and I am so glad! I was able to catch the Metro and walk less than a block to the office. I was promptly greeted by Dr Yu and taken back after filling out paperwork. She could tell I was nervous, so she made sure to explain everything thoroughly. I also loved how she broke down the details of what needed to be done and the estimated costs associated. I hate getting blindsighted by out of pocket costs. Anyway, she is awesome and very gentle. You can tell she loves what she does. I have already made a return appointment for myself and a new patient appointment for my hubby! I highly recommend her! read more

Was in town for business. Had some tooth pain so made an appointment based on the reviews from Yelp. Convenient location from the Red Line. Dr. Yu fixed my tooth pain issue which was an existing crown that needed to be replaced. I also had her check some other issues that my local dentist informed me that I needed to get done soon. Was in shock what I learned. My local dentist informed me that I needed 3 crowns on old fillings in which there was not enough tooth left to re-fill the fillings. I pointed them out to Dr. Yu. After x-rays and review, Dr. Yu stated she can remove the old fillings and replace with new, so she did. No crowns was needed. Ironically, the crown that was replaced was not any of the 3 that my dentist wanted to do. I asked why my dentist told me otherwise. She said it was likely due to $ but she could not speak for my local dentist. Dr. Yu stated that charges for crowns are much higher than replacing old fillings. Saved $ from not having to get work done that I thought I needed. Will be back in a month on my next trip to get my permanent crown placed. Too bad Dr. Yu is not local for me. Would love to have an honest local dentist on my side. BTW, you got to love the massage chairs. read more

I was seen immediately upon my arrival, and the documents requested prior to my visit were on hand. Overall, the entire process was smooth and pain free. In interacting with Dr. Yu, I gained greater confidence in her as an expert and in my own ability to manage my dental health. She has a gift for explaining rather complex things in a way that's accessible to the common person. Additionally, I truly felt that Dr. Yu's primary concern was my dental health and, more impressivley, the effects that this may have on my overall physical health. I stewed a while before writing this review. I think Dr. Yu is a capable dentist, but there were some issues about her practice that still bother me. Most importantly, she is pricey and I think somewhat dishonestly so. I should have known based on her location in Chevy Chase. On my first visit, she quoted me for fillings needed to correct some fissues left after removal of my old mercury amalgams (done by another office). I made note of the price but when I went back for the work, I was told the cost would be three times what she'd quoted. She and her staff denied what I had heard. Because I had overcome the inertia to get to the dentist, I went ahead with getting one of the fillings done and she collected my full payment for the work (her policy). She then submitted to my insurance. I saw that my insurance paid her for the work. Her charge was much more than what they covered, but she still owes me money from my upfront payment that has not been returned. Another reason I know she's overly expensive is that she quoted me a much higher price (approx 1500 more) for invisalign than two other dentists. The other issue I have was not being listened to. Upon my initial visit for a cleaning, I was careful to mention that I didn't want photos of my teeth or face. I was told to strike through the consent forms (done), but Dr. Yu proceeded to take numerous photos anyway. I felt somewhat violated and bullied, and just kind of yucky. She still has my money and I don't care to deal with her to get it back. read more

Dr. Yu is an amazing dentist. I went to her after putting off seeing a dentist for many years and I'm glad I went. She is incredibly nice, caring, and really takes the time to explain everything to you. She sat me down and took nearly 20 minutes to explain my x-rays, ask me questions, and give me her recommendations for me teeth going forwards. I was incredibly comfortable in her office (a first!) and her staff and hygienist were very nice as well.
