    Authentic Hawaiian Canoe Tour
    Christie W.

Hawaiian Sails is AMAZING and wonderful! Owned and operated by a wonderful Hawaiian family. A real Hawaiian canoe. We go out every time we come to the Big Island. It is a MUST and is different every time.

Our last night in Kona tonight and we asked our three kids (ages 7, 9, and 12) what their favorite activity and all said the whale watching on the "Moana" boat. Owners are the nicest family, and we learned so much. The beautifully laid out snacks and cold beverages were nice, but the real beauty was the hospitality and warmth of this business. The many whales we got to see was a bonus. Very knowledgeable, and we chose this 90 minute ride because we didn't want to be stuck on a half day boat with a lot of people. Didn't get sick at all was so smooth! Will be back for sure. Thanks for such a wonderful memory.

You can sit close to sea,, sun on the deck or dive right into the ocean

Whether you are visiting the Big Island for the first time or are a permanent resident like I am this is an experience you should not miss. Every sail is an amazing adventure filled with the fun in the sun, splashing in the sea, a dash of history thrown in and lots of aloha spirit. Schedule a sail as soon as you can and become a part of this ohana.

People say the best experience on the Big Island is swimming with the manta rays, but I COMPLETELY disagree! Our experience on this authentic Hawaiian boat was not only the best thing I've done in Hawaii; It is one of the best experiences of my life. Being in such a small craft, you can actually dangle your feet in the water as you cruise around the ocean. The family that owns and operates the boat are about the kindest people you'll ever meet. They gave us great recommendations of other things to do on the island, and the drinks and snack they provided were delicious. We didn't end up snorkeling, but that's because we saw a mother whale and her newborn calf. We were able to get very close to them, without intruding, and watched as the mother helped the calf stay afloat and learn to swim. This once in a lifetime experience made what was already a fun and relaxing morning unbeatable. Without a doubt, any time we are on the Big Island, my family and I will be back to visit the great people at Authentic Hawaiian Sails.

An adventure not to be missed! If you're looking for an intimate sailing and snorkeling experience with a menagerie of underwater sea creatures on the Big Island, book your trip online with Hawaiian Sails- it's very easy, pick your date and time, make a payment and they'll send you an email confirmation. You'll depart from the shores of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the beach in the residence section. Check in with the boss lady and then you'll be able to board the outrigger right from the shore. Their personable crew : The Captain, Vosse, Robert, and Garrett provided history of the island and great tips as you make your way across the waves to a snorkeling spot. Fins, snorkeling equipment, and floating noodles are provided. On our trip, I saw yellow & achilles tang, sea turtle, hoggie fish, black triggerfish, and a parrotfish, and the crew kept a close eye on everyone in the water. Once finished with our snorkeling, we had snacks including fresh fruit, aloha drinks (strawberry guava is refreshing!), pretzels, chips and brownies and we headed back shore. I thoroughly enjoyed being able to dip my feet in the water and experience sailing on an outrigger. It was great to see Maui, Mauna Kea, and Mauna Loa from the perspective of the ocean. Many thanks!!

A beautiful boat run by a great family. This was a return trip for us, and it was just as great as before. Highly recommend if you want a day on the water in a small group setting.

We wanted an intimate experience rather than being with a big boat filled with strangers. This was perfect! Captain Steve was precisely on time for meeting us at the dock and beginning our sail. He and his 1st mate, Sarah, were attentive but not intrusive. They made us feel welcome, served us cold beverages and pupus. My daughter experienced a little seasickness and Sarah quietly noticed and brought her some ginger which helped to calm her belly. By the end of the cruise, my daughter was only wishing we had another hour to sail! I would highly recommend this small family owned company the next time you want to go out on the ocean. Their boat was super clean and well maintained. Those things matter! I will definitely use this company again. I am already looking forward to whale season! They were so knowledgeable and friendly, and they really took the time to answer every single question we had. Both Ashely and Alec have researched whales in Alaska and Hawaii, so hearing specific researcher knowledge was really cool. Ashley was also just so enthusiastic. She really made us understand how special it was to be out there witnessing these animals. The water was a little rocky at times, but we still saw so many whales, including one that got within 30 yards of our boat. The best part was actually on the way back. We were already at time for the tour, but Ashley noticed a group of boats congregating and went to investigate. It ended up being a whale shark that came right up by the boat, which the guides told us is an incredibly rare event. It was just an awesome thing to see. You can really tell they have so much reverence and respect for the whales. If you have any interest in seeing these animals up close and hearing from specialists who work with them full time, this is the company to go with. We have so much respect for the work Ashley and Alec do.

Keep in mind there is no snorkeling on this excursion and the area around the Hilton is not safe or appropriate for snorkeling. I am writing the review solely on the lava field excursion part. My wife was very dissapointed that there was no snorkeling as we purchased new snorkeling equipment. Roxy was our tour guide and was probably the most knowledgeable and professional tour guide we have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Roxy was knowledgeable in the history of volcanoes on Hilo and elsewhere, horticulture, bird species, animals, Hawaiian culture, tourist attractions, history of the Hawaiian Islands, tribes and Capt. Cook, beaches, teachings, burial practices and so much more. Roxy told stories of the early days in Hawaii and how it evolved. Also as a noted her driving and safety practices were impeccable. If you are planning to come to Hilo you must make it a point to reach out to Roxy. We spent approximately 8 hours on the tour and it was so enriching although the lack of snorkeling was a dissapointment . Highly recommended Mahalo

The guides took the tour out to the Captain Cook Monument, where the snorkeling was cool. The water was clear, the marine life plenty, and it ended up being one of the best snorkeling spots I've experienced. One tip: be sure to rent the flippers when you sign up. They made a huge difference and helped a lot in the water. They are not provided from the all in tour price. For the tour price you get the ride and snorkel mask with a floaty. They also rent life jackets if you need that. This tour is definitely geared toward people who are comfortable swimming and being on an open-air boat. What really made the experience special were the crew members. Our captain and lifeguard were laid-back, friendly, and made everyone feel safe while keeping the atmosphere fun. So I had to wait about 40 minutes for a return call. The experience wasn't very welcoming and not very 'aloha.' Day of the event, it was confusing that the confirmation I received (when I booked) said 11:00pm, at one point the confirmation said 11:50pm, and then finally it said 10:50pm. So I had to keep on checking the confirmation page, because it kept on changing. Definitely don't show up too early, because you'll be turned away! The actual event was a ton of fun, although I got a bit seasick after about 20 minutes. The mantas are absolutely gorgeous and you'll feel super special when they look you in the eye.
