I booked the trip through Ocean Sports that has a shack on the beach at "A Bay" also known as Anaeho'omalu Bay. My sister has lived on the Big Island for a few decades and I visit quite often, but I still give up on pronouncing most of the Hawaiian names. DIRECTIONS TO A BAY: If you are heading south from Hapuna Beach turn right at the second light which is Waikoloa Beach Drive. Go past Marriott and make a left when you see Kolea Resort. There is a gate, but look to the left and you will see the public parking lot. Park and walk down the path through the lava field and you'll see the Ocean Sports Beach Shack. Check in there and you'll see the Lani Kai sitting in the water. See my photos. Walked out into the water and boarded the Lani Kai. Met James and Brooke and we headed north to our first dive site near Puako. All the wet suits, tanks and BC's are provided. James Bach was our captain for the day and Brooke Landt was the Dive Master. Captain James headed north toward our first dive site. On the way there we saw a huge pod of dolphins and we all headed to the bow to take photos. Our first dive site was near Puako. It wasn't my favorite place, but we went through some lava tubes. I don't recall seeing any memorable sea life while down below. James and Brooke caught two big Ono on our way to the second dive site near the Hilton Waikoloa. We saw a blacktip reef shark and some Horned Helmet Snails which were cool during our second dive. I think the next time I go diving on the Big Island I will concentrate on sites south of Kailua-Kona because I think the sites are much better. The Lani Kai was convenient for our hotel though, so we didn't have to drive an hour or more to board one of the vessels down south.

We also had Danny as our dive master who was also fantastic (and wanted me to make sure I wrote about him even though he has no idea what Yelp is!) They took us out to a spot called Buddha Point and Pentagon. The Pentagon is very popular and I loved loved loved that dive. Ask for the Pentagon. Kona is the Marlin Capital of the world with the most 1000 pounds recorded in the world. There are many charters to choose from 1/2 day, 3/4 day, all day, private charters and shared charters. I choose a shared charter this time on the Aloha Kai with Captain Jeff. Capt. Jeff's website is full of information on fishing in Hawaii, Weather, what to bring, and even sea sickness. It's all there. SO when you get on his boat at 7:30AM you know it's going to be a day of adventures. Jan 28 2021 leaving the harbor we saw Spinner Dolphins, and Whales! Heading for the fishing banks we had our briefing on rod management, fighting chair and harness preparation and what being part of the crew means. I guarantee you will not be coddled by Capt. Jeff. He is straightforward with a goal of giving you the best opportunity to catch fish. He wants his rods and reels treated right and makes sure you know how to use them. His direct manner may not be for some. I read all the reviews and wondered what he would be like and if we would get along. If you are into fishing, I think you will. Shared Charters mean there are 2 people fishing and that is all. One gets one side, with 3 rods and the other get the other side with 3 rods. At 11:30 the sides change. Anticipation is high! Trolling for marlin can be hit or miss. They don't run in schools so patience is a virtue. Half a day gone and we have 2 mackerel in the cooler for bottom fishing later. Weather is perfect, whales abound and Maui is in the background. Jeff sees some Tuna and changes lures but they are gone. So off we go to bottom fishing. He uses a different smaller rod for bottom fishing and puts one of our mackerels s on it. 5 minutes later wham a hit, it's a big hit and my share companion, Lance jumps into the fighting chair and buckle's in. Pull, reel in, pull, reel, keep the line tight. WHAT do we have? Unfortunately, whatever it was got off. So, Capt. Jeff baits up again. This time it was my turn. Knowing how much Lance wanted to catch a fish asked Jeff to let him take my turn. Down goes the bait, and wham another big hit. The battle is on and Lance is doing his best to hold his fish. Finally, the fish comes to the surface. It's a 120 sand shark. Lance is elated and after photos it's released. Whew back to trolling. Suddenly the reel to my left is singing fish on!!! Marlin on and it's my share side. I slide into the chair and harness up. Reel in place the battle starts. This Marlin is jumping and running and jumping. The line is tight and I am reeling (remembering to keep the line on the reel even). 20 minutes later it comes to the boat. We are exhausted and happy. Caught, photo'd and released 175 Blue Marlin. What a day. Summary Capt. Jeff knows how to fish, he knows where they are and if they are striking you will get one. If you don't like direct people don't go. The shared charter is a good deal and I will do it again. THANK YOU Capt. Jeff

Captain Damian used the light winds to carry us a few miles offshore, then apparently switched to electric power when the wind ebbed. It was blissfully quiet and peaceful. When we spotted whales surfacing nearby, mate Shaun dropped a microphone over the side and we were treated to the chorus of multiple humpbacks singing all around us - unbelievable! The crew kept us supplied with healthy snacks and hydration and good information about the baby, mother and male escort whales we were seeing. All and all, it was an epic morning experience off the West shore. Love to come back!
