As I have been dealing with this post office on a regular basis, they now know what packages to look out for on my behalf. The staff are so attentive and friendly, it makes it very easy to deal with them. The post office itself is quite small, but they do have all the basic postage needs required such as the boxes, packets, sleeves, bubble wrap, envelopes, stamps etc. However, because it is quite small, there normally is only two staff behind the counter and during lunch time is can get quite busy. So be sure to expect this at that time or come earlier or later in the day. Conveniently located next to the Oxley train station and plenty of parking space in the area.

But that's okay...you'll get what you came for and that's all that really matters.

You can feel the arrogance emanating from the staff. $29.90 is the price for a police check for a volunteer position or $49.90 for a normal check BUT the gap staff refused to listen and tried to charge me $60. I called customer service for the post office and they confirmed that I was right. The gap post office takes pleasure in wasting your time and money. My advice to anyone is to take the next bus to the nearest post office that is NOT the gap's.

While it does not offer much more than your average newsagent it is a little quirky. Inside, right up the back, you will find the St Lucia South Post Office. This is little more than a hole in the wall and a few envelopes on sale but it does the job. The rest of the newsagent is as you would expect but with very small ailes to walk through. It is never too busy so the service is always fast and everyone pretty friendly. I am yet to buy a scratchie that has won anything from here though.

We've had our post office box with the Red Hill post office for about 18 months and yet to have a drama. We're able to call and chat with the owner to ask if there's any parcels and often if I have to collect something from the early hours door he'll greet me at the door with the parcel without me having to say what box I'm from. SERVICE! Plus, a post office that can lure you with stationery delights as you stand in line is a-ok by me. A note on lines actually. I have no patience for them but even when it's been busy by the Red Hill post office standards the line has, at most, been 4 or 5 deep and seen to quickly. Sure a post office is a post office. But the Red Hill Post Office is what I imagine a local country town post office - one where everyone knows your name.

They also have a wide selection of books, puzzles, board games and the sort of items you might find in a toy store or magic shop. Yes, they sell envelopes and all that jazz, but these items are relegated to the back wall. Presumably the cool stuff is there for impulse-buyers or to keep the kids occupied whilst Mum or Dad line up to get their postal needs serviced. However, though Red Hill Post Office is very publicly located, I've never found it to be overly busy. Usually I just walk straight up to the counter. This is certainly unusual for Brisbane's inner-city post offices, particularly Paddington Central Post Office which is perpetually packed; sometimes the line even winds its way outside of the (much larger) store. Red Hill Post Office also offers passport services. It was only recently discovered that not all post offices in Brisbane do this. Arranging it is easy and can be done over the Internet, by phone or via a visit.

Most people are too busy using it as a shortcut from Adelaide to Ann St and vice versa - including myself. Which does make me feel a little bit sad. It was named in honour of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (known as the ANZACs) and was a memorial built for the men and women who fought overseas. It was officially opened on Armistice Day, 1930. At the top of the Square, almost at Ann Street, is the Shrine of Remembrance, which houses the "Eternal Flame of Remembrance" which, in its bronze urn, never goes out. Each of the 18 columns around the shrine represents the 18 years of peace we had after World War I. And the bottle trees in the park are to commemorate Queensland Light Horse Regiments, which served in South Africa's Boer War (1899-1902), while palm trees are actually Middle Eastern Date Palms and they were planted to celebrate Australia's success in the Middle East during both World Wars. And, of course, each year on Anzac Day (25 April), there's a dawn service held at the Shrine of Remembrance and in the Square itself.

Both offering a shady, comfortable spot to relax, eat lunch, take in the greenery ( I say that cause apart from the botanical gardens there isn't enough of it about, and the scenery beyond the memorial's grassy borders is just cbd highrises and office blocks) and most importantly remember those who had past fighting for our country. One of my first memories of this place was on Anzac day 1997 when I, as primary school vice captain was asked to join in a remembrance ceremony in this square along with other representatives from schools all over Brisbane. I remember standing there on that central path hearing the trumpets sound and staring across the space admiring the statues and boab trees and eagerly waiting in anticipation to not only see the eternal flame and pay my respects but to shake John Howard's hand and recite the words 'lest we forget' - It was a beautiful moment for me and it cemented the significance of what this place represents in my heart and mind forever. Unfortunately at night this place on occasion, for some disrespectful people loses its significance and is tainted by acts of drunken or disrespectful behavior and vandalism - So I would suggest steering clear of it later in the evening and I hope that sooner rather than later that negative aspect of Anzac square passes.

The guy that is always there is friendly and helpful, I had a parcel that had to go out that day and he told me the mail trucks pick up times and where to go If I missed the last one so it would still be sent that day, as well as the parcel I was also planning on posting a letter in the mailbox and he noticed I had the wrong stamp on and helped me. They sell weird trinket stuff that I don't think anyone buys, but they have all the bags and boxes and things you would expect. Overall, great little Australia post, nothing fancy, but then... Who needs a fancy post office...?

Mind you, the queue can end up out the door at times, but the same can be said for any post office in the CBD around lunchtime. I came in at about 11:30, and only had one person ahead of me in the queue. I was getting my passport renewed. Note, you must book, but you can do this online. To be honest, I suspect I could have just walked in, but if it's busy, you'll probably get turned away. Anyhow, the photos I'd already gotten were not quite good enough, and the set up here involves a digital camera, so they can keep doing it until it's right, and software that scans the image to give it the nod. It'll tell you why it was rejected too. The young lady served me was very happy and friendly, no complaints there. In the end, it's just a post office, but definitely no complaints.
