I lived in Dallas until 2001 where my electric bill never went over $90 in hottest of hot months. When I first moved here, the rates were fairly reasonable. I lived in a small place, which helped, but even when I moved to my current place in 2003, my bill never passed $90 during the summer. Suddenly a couple of years ago, they apparently jacked up their rates about 50%. I now easily pay $150 during the summer months. And this is with me keeping my computer turned off when I'm not using it; keeping all the lights off almost all the time; and keeping my thermostat set at 84-degrees during the summer. I don't even use my freaking ceiling fan. The only appliances that use electricity in my house at almost any given time are the fridge and the damn tv, and it ain't a big tv, folks. I fail to understand how my bill could have jumped to such an enormous rate, despite me grotesquely adjusting my thermostat to "lower" costs. I never had to set my thermostat at 84-degrees in August before a couple of years ago. Even now that it's as cold as a witch's titty, my bill is still at least $70-something per month. And my heater runs on GAS, so it doesn't freaking matter where I set my thermostat, in terms of my electric bill. So during the winter, with a gas bill of around $70 and an electric bill somehow around the same amount, I end up paying the same amount as I do for energy during the summer. Unbelievable. Has anyone else noticed a major jump in the rates in the last couple of years? I really can't believe it's my house that's the problem. Fark you, Austin Energy. This company knows they can get away with scamming their customers because it is a monopoly. At first I thought the reason I was getting late bills was because of my mail carrier, but then I went online and saw multiple complaints from people who are having the same issue. When I get a bill on the 8th that is due on the 9th and printed up 10-14 days prior, or if I get it on the 10th when it was due on the 9th, there's a good chance my payment is going to be late. Some months, I haven't even received a bill, but when I speak with a customer service representative to follow up and make a payment, they still say it is my fault if it is late. I've also tried to trouble-shoot this by asking them to change my billing cycle to the 1st of the month, since district employed teachers only get paid monthly, but they refuse. Never mind that I pay every other bill on time each month (because I get them), and my credit score is over 800...no matter who you are or how your credit score is, if you move across town and you've had even one late payment in your time at Austin Energy, they will charge you a $200 deposit. Given the fact that they are admittedly aware of their billing issues and they go out of their way to make it difficult for people to make on-time payments and base the need for a deposit on this and not a credit check, I've determined that this is a big scam to get $200 deposits from all their customers. I wish a politician would step in and make them take responsibility for their shady practices. I've gone up the chain of command with this and spoken with Supervisors' Supervisors and no one cares, because it isn't like they risk losing my business. I'm stuck with Austin Energy unless I with move or decide to primitive camp in the woods for the rest of my life. read more

Always have long waits on hold. Today, there was a long 10+ minute wait. When the rep finally answers, my office phone rings and I ask for her to hold on. I mute my cell phone, tell the person on the office phone I need to call them back, and in the intervening 5 seconds the rep hangs up on me. I guess their time is more valuable than anyone else's, about 1200x more valuable since they expect us to wait 10 minutes and they wait 5 seconds. And their website is worthless, with no assistance when you call up with problems. Instead, they promise a response from their technical team that never comes. read more

Why can't YELP make a 0 STARS rating? AE deserves 0 stars for price gouging their customers. AUSTIN ENERGY you deserve to be put out of business. I never had electric bill so high than what I had through AE. AE scams people. The meter readers don't even read the meters. They guess from what the previous month reading was, and just assumed that you used the same amount as the last month. I used to live in a 2 bedroom apt. We were charged $226 almost every month for electric. We were hardly ever home, and NEVER used what they supposedly said we used a month. Their so called ENERGY EFFICIENT monitored AC was a joke. When we would get home from work it would be 80-85 degrees inside the apt when it was BLAZING outside. Of course it was monitored... It's AE way to screw you on your electricity every month. Austin Energy sure doesn't mind charging people for electricity, but yet they sure mind when the customer can't afford to pay their bill due to their OUTRAGEOUS prices. I'm happy to say that we don't use AE anymore. I'm actually saving $136.00 a month in electricity, and I have the AC set the same as we did when we had AE. We have one option for electricity. They do not post payments for several days after you make them, thus, charging late fees and at times, shutting off service. They do offer pay stations with immediate posting, but those pay stations close earlier than banks do, thus anyone with a job cannot make a payment after work. If your payment is due on a holiday, you're basically screwed. This company is predatory and bloated with a tin ear for feedback. read more

I just moved into a small one bedroom apartment and am very conscious about my resource usage. Based on what my water and electricity meters reported, I used only about $6.80 in electricity for the last month, and about $9 in water. My total utilities bill, inclusive of all the customer charges, power supply adjustment, wastewater and other add-ons? $104.00. Some of this was related to City of Austin services, but the bulk came from water and electricity add-ons. Thanks for "rewarding" my low energy usage, Austin Energy. It's impossible to get a hold of anyone in this company, they'r apathetic at best when you do and I have requested for MONTHS to have a tech come out to replace the years old meter, mine being the only that has NOT been replaced with a digital one like the rest of my neighbors. Terrible customer care service and unfortunately they are the only electric company in Austin. I've been a customer of 3 separate electric companies in different cities before coming to Austin and I can say with all honesty this is the worst customer service. Issue 1: My meter does not send updated information to AE, so all of the electric readings I have are "estimates." One month, they charged me for the past 3 months worth of electricity because they finally got one "good" reading and realized they'd been under-charging me. I was more than happy to pay what I owed, but then I realized that because AE had charged me 3 months use into one month, I had gone to tier 4 of usage (which is a higher rate of electricity). After almost a month's worth of arguing with AE, they finally admitted to their mistake and adjusted my electric usage so it was spread out over 3 months (as opposed to 1) which lowered my bill by $100 overall. Not once were they proactive in figuring this issue out, I had to do all of the work. It seems like they could not care less about their customers. I figured the issues ended there... Issue 2: The next month, my bill came and it looked like it was at a more "normal" amount than the month before, so I happily logged in to pay it. That's when I realized that this bill was actually higher than i had anticipated. Due to issue #1, I had started taking pictures of my meter to document how much I use (since I can't use the online app because my meter still doesn't send updated readings). When I looked at the picture I took the day of my closing bill date, I realized AE had charged me an extra 200 KWH....! The number they said my meter was at was even higher than it actually was a week later when I called them. They documented all of my pictures and said they would do a bill review to adjust it. The issue was that my meter was still not sending accurate readings. My big issue with this is that this was the first issue I had with them and supposedly they "fixed" it, but it's very obvious nothing was ever done. It's been 2 weeks since I filed the billing update and no one has called me or had an answer about updates on my case. It's ridiculous what poor customer service they have. I've talked to maybe 2-3 customer service agents who actually do their job and are sympathetic to this whole issue. The majority of them do nothing--including the supervisors. Maybe I'll update this review if I ever get a customer service representative to get back to me with answers as opposed to waiting until I call 10+ times to get an answer. Absolutely the WORST customer service experience I've ever had! After placing my initial call on January 14th to question the extremely high bill I received I was told that someone would be by my place and back in touch with me by the following Friday. January 21st no word or service tech, I call back, my "claim" has been submitted but they can't give me any additional information. The customer service rep from both of these calls agrees something is extremely off about the bill and it'll almost definitely need revising. Now here we are January 27th and my bill is due and I still have NO info. Here's my story & what I've written to the VP of Cust Relations & Cust Svc. (I'm also a widow to an IBEW Electrician who died servicing power so I know the value and respect for Electical services beyond what most could imagine.) *Truncated letter. 1.26.16 Dear VP of Customer Service and Customer Relations, This letter is written with GREAT DISMAY and DISAPPOINTMENT!! Please note that I will be posting a SOCIAL REVIEW of this issue to YELP and on your AUSTIN Energy FB page. My issue stems from the fact that I as a customer for over 13 years had made a request for a transfer of service based on an anticipated purchase of a new home to my new address.( NORMALLY AN EXCITING AND WONDERFUL EVENT!) However, life happens and with a purchase of a new home my close date got pushed back from the lender. I as soon as, I found out about the new date for closing called Austin Energy to advise them of the impending shift in dates around the move of homes and TRANSFER of said services. To my great DISMAY my services were not only turned on with the new home early despite a Supervisor listening to the tape to verify that I did advise of change dates. I was also told that I would be charged a fee of $20 to have said services that were erroneously turned on disconnected until the new move in date. To add insult to injury, I also had my existing services at current residence disconnected. To which I discovered after coming home to my current residence to discover my garage door was not working. So I proceeded into my home to learn that power was out. I immediately called Austin energy pleaded my case to the representative who had me on hold and on a call for over 50 minutes to only have the call disconnected. During the time of the initial call they reviewed the tape for two calls one for the original change date and the second call to advise of the new change date for closing and thus what I assumed was tied to the request to transfer services to the new address and maintain service at the existing address. I was not allowed to speak to a so called supervisor but was repeatedly told that a supervisor was reviewing the tape of the call. To which I was essentially told it was my responsibility to advise to not stop services at existing address. I'm sorry a normal conversation with someone about a transfer of services there is an assumption that when one item is transferred to another that the initial locale is not to be penalized for receiving said transfer. I was however not only penalized for having services erroneously transferred to new address despite the supervisor recognizing that I did indeed call for the change of dates. I was then also penalized for not securing that your agent who made the change date noted in your system to Feb 12th (Which Obviously didn't help because new home has services despite the call verified in your call recordings.) that said agent knew that the existing services that were providing the new address as a transfer to was not going to stop services of the residence of which I currently reside until said closing on our new home. I was then accused of dropping the ball for not advising said agent at the time of the need to not stop services from the original change date. This is ironic to me that while I'm accused of dropping said ball your recordings for so call quality care and training purposes actually only proved that your company failed by still turning on said services. So, in essence I came home to a house with no power, unable to get it turned back on despite what your recorded calls showed me calling in requesting the changes. Without as so much as concern for customer with a zero balance and INSULT to injury I was forced to camp out in my home but I tried to be reasonable despite being a single widowed mama with no family in town. So the two ladies were going to be brave and camp out at home. Despite being unable to cook dinner for my daughter I took her out to McDonalds a relative treat for any 9 year old to have a dinner of sorts and do her homework at 7:45 after having been on two unsuccessful phone calls for over an hour of an half of requests for your companies agents help to remedy an error on your part to no avail. I pulled myself up and my crying daughter yes she was crying. You probably have that on a recording too now pleading for help to restore our services. Without avail, we came home determined not to stop us from our daily flow of dinner, homework feeding the dog in the dark and camping at home with no running water and power to be found. Mind you I'm living in boxes with most of our items being ready for the move that got pushed. So I had no idea where candles, lanterns, batteries etc.., are truly now. Yet alone Especially in the dark! We come home and decide to crawl into bed IT GETS WAY WORST with Sirens and eventually Firemen having to be called to disarm Screaming FireAlarms jarring us out of bed and piercing our bodies until 3 a.m. for an hour and a half. read more

While trying to set up new service, the phone system said I have a 20 minute wait time. After waiting for 30 minutes with my call still going unanswered, I logged on to the website to try to sign up there. You can start service from the site, but you need at least "3 days advance notice but no more than 6 days notice". This is ridiculous. Now I get to look forward to overpriced service, joy! read more

Wow, where do I begin? 1. Last year, COA utilities was updating their automated online software system when I accidentally paid my bill twice. Spoke with the manager who said they would cut a check and reimburse me. 7 months later, there was no check in the mail. Finally, I asked them to credit my account for the amount since I was sick of waiting, which they did. It took nearly 8 months to get my money back!! 2. June 2012: I received my bill saying I had an overpayment of $152 and change. I had paid my bill in full and on time every month. Called COA about this so called overpayment. Turns out, it was a mistake from when COA was having trouble with their software system update or whatever. They asked for proof of payment from my bank. I faxed them a bank statement showing the debit of $152 from my checking account last year. But no, that wasn't enough. They asked for a "check image". HELLO! There is no check image because the payment was directly debited out of my account! So then they said they wanted a letter from my bank stating testifying to the fact that this was a direct debit and therefore there is no check image to be had. I called my bank and the representative thought the COA was crazy. But they were happy to write and fax them a letter. Called COA back twice. Apparently they lost the letter and somehow it is not in my file. 3. I had my husband call the COA about this because I am at my wits end. The representative he spoke with now says we owe the $152. Yesterday, I called COA after being on hold for 32 minutes and spoke with a guy named Darryl who I had to explain the whole story to over again. He didn't give a damn about my frustration. I asked him, "does it make sense to you that the COA is requesting a "check image" when my account was directly debited"? He said he couldn't say whether or not that made sense to him. 4. Now, I am on hold again, hoping and praying a half-witted person will be able to help me. I am thankful that I am in a position where $152 doesn't make or break me. I can afford to pay my bill twice if that's what it comes down to. But I feel for those of you who really can't afford to pay when the COA makes a mistake! I truly empathize with your frustration and outrage. All I can say is to keep trying and maybe it might help to try to suppress your anger as justified as it may be and be as nice as possible and beg for help. --Stuck with COA utilities read more

Nine mo after I vacated the house which Austin Energy made uninhabitable by cutting utility svc, & four mo after I sold said house to another one of their potential victims, this EVIL utility co has come back from the presumed dead & started once again harassing me for payment for 10's of 1000's of ga of water that WERE NEVER USED. Just added solar panels, not understanding how COA utilities can charge for whole house usage. They Added what my solar system produced, which pushed me into tier 5...which is highest charge, then give standard solar credit... It's no wonder this company has so many horrible reviews. They take no financial responsibility for their ineptitude. My advice to you - if you have any concerns about your bill - speak to a supervisor, then their supervisor until you have a case manager. Because until then, the customer service reps won't volunteer any more than what you can see online and they no offer no advice on how to find more information. Ask as many questions in as many ways as you can and don't assume anything - even if it seems commonplace. One final note, if you see online that you don't have a balance due or that you have a credit on your account, do NOT assume that is true. They can and will bill you whenever they want for as many back months as they want. And they will make you pay or they'll turn off your power. I do not have have the ability to choose another provider and unfortunately, it seems they knowingly treat their customers as such. Referral business is obviously not a part of their marketing plan. If/when I can choose, I will choose someone else. read more

Beyond MAD. I called again and it turns out I was lied to and a check was never mailed out. I called and spoke with 2 different representatives and couldn't get more than a "Errrrrr, nothing we can do". Here's my timeline: at 6 weeks post account being closed AE told me to call back in a few weeks because they wouldn't even consider refunding it at this point. So I used the call to update my address. Note that all other utilities had refunded us by this time. 8 weeks post they made notes on the account and "mailed it out" (LIE) and at 9 weeks post suddenly it's all the new system's fault and no, I can't charge them interest and fees or get paid for suffering and distress. I wish I could hire a collection agency, sue them, or report them to the BBB. read more

After 36 hours in 90 degree heat, my power still wasn't turned on, and AE could only tell me a service truck would arrive sometime. I was told repeatedly it is not AE policy to give eta's. These people are worse than the cable company!! When a truck did arrive, I was told I should be on my premisis at all times. For all 36 hours?? I'm not allowed to leave for 36 hours?? When you have a customer request, these people WILL not do anything. If you need to be ON BUDGET BILLING to avoid disconnection and have to live on a BUDGET, these people will make you jump through some stupid hoops to get into the budget billing program And when you finally get to budget billing, they are obnoxious with payment. They call you up the day before payment is legally due---to demand that you have to pay. They don't even proactively check their own records to see if you have alredy paid or if it is in the process of posting. It supposedly takes a day to post. You are naturally at fault untill they personally decide to check, whenever this checking of the payment records personally may be. Rodents are more considerate of your needs than the staff of Austin Energy. read more

Wish I could give 0 stars. City of Austin utilities is currently trying to hold me responsible for a previous resident's account balance. My power has been off for a full week in a place I am paying significant rent to live in. Spent a full week trying to set up an account prior to the 1st of the month. Spoke to 7-8 different representatives by phone, none of whom indicated any potential problem as long as I submitted a lease for proof of residency and paid $200 deposit. Lo and behold my service is discontinued July 1. Got notification by voicemail that they need to speak to me at 8:55 PM (they close at 9). Was not notified the company would be closed July 3 for the "holiday weekend" until 6:20 PM on July 2 in spite of 10 phone calls and one visit in person (no signs posted). Previous renter and landlord called multiple times on my behalf and representatives told them they had not received proof of a new lease in spite of confirming with me it had been received by email AND I WATCHED a representative scan it in person to my account. I have gotten multiple different responses over the phone. July 2, someone was actually trying to bargain with me and stated, "How much over the $200 deposit are you willing to pay today so we can provide you services until you can pay off the remaining balance?" Did I mention I am not listed on the account, not a guarantor, nor has the individual with the outstanding balance given permission for me to have access to any of her account information? What are they expecting, a blank check? This is not only unethical but UNLAWFUL. I am currently working with a lawyer. No one at the company seems to care. My case was just escalated to a supervisor (after 2 weeks) and he has 3-5 business days to review my case and respond (following a 24-48 hour waiting period to be escalated to a supervisor). As previous comments have stated they have a monopoly in my area and should be shut down. No one in their right might would use theses services if there was any other option. read more

Awful "customer service". An old bill keeps popping up as overdue when it was clearly paid. They just keep saying, "Ignore it, it's just a programming error." A programming error that they have not fixed since September??? We are coming up on March now. Something should have been done already. Another complaint I have is that our bill is due on the 25th of every month. When I asked them to change it to the 1st of the month, I was told that was not possible because they have certain days when they read the meters. I explained that many people (whether they live on social security, retirement or work for the government) only get paid once a month and on the first of the month. I told them that I thought it was a sad plot to make people pay that 5 dollar late fee. Not only that, when we pay our bill, it takes them on average 10 days to clear the payment so the previous month's amount due always shows up on our current bill. Believe me, if we had the option, we would have chosen a different electricity company. This is sad. read more

I have had a substitute USPS mail carrier every week and have been having a lot of trouble getting my bills on time or at all. I called Austin Energy and spoke with Tiffany Kyles and she is the best representative I've ever contacted at Austin Energy. She understood the USPS mail situation and took the time to email each and every bill to me. She did not rush it or leave bills out of my request. She make sure the emails went through before hanging up. This is so different than the other experiences I've had when I call in. The online bills take so long to load I get booted off before I can access them. This is a known issue but Tiffany took the time to put in a request with their IT to take a look into it for me again. She was so knowledgeable and went above and beyond to try to help. read more

Customer service which isn't "second to none" -- it IS none! I worked for the City of Austin for five years, between 1987 and 1992 and I know that if line staff don't want to pass on a message to managers, or managers don't want to be bothered with a customer complaint -- they will simply drop the ball and/or "forget" to pass on a message or "misfile" a complaint so that nothing gets done. I called the COA Electric Utility on no less than SIX different occasions in May and June, 2009 regarding a disupte with my bill, was "promised" a response each time and each time no response occurred. Their phone tree is absolutely maddening. One must drill at *least* four levels into the tree before one can reach a customer wervice representative who will assure you that "someone will check into your complaint" -- and then nothing will be done. Today (June 29) when I called, I spent nearly THREE hours with various people at the COA Electric Utility -- being disconnected, being transferred and disconnected, being transferred into ether, being transferred to the wrong department and then re-transferred to another wrong department and then disconnected, being transferred to the wrong department then being transferred to someone who said, "I don't know what to do or who to transfer this to" and finally getting the right person whose only response was, "Well, you used too much electricity last year and the rate is set in stone and nothing can or will be done about your complaint." The COA Electric Utility represent the worst of the worst in customer service and customer response. It isn't service which is "second to none" -- it IS none. read more

Austin Energy provides the worst service I have ever had. Since they are a monopoly they are charging whatever they want. At the end of each year they do this calculation that they say is a catch up for them, and they add charges to the bill and there is nothing you can do. The charges are endless: Electric Service $306.81 Water Service $36.36 Wastewater Service $29.05 Clean Community Service $7.65 Solid Waste Services $25.22 Drainage Service $10.38 Street Service + $9.77 Don't use Austin Energy if you can help it. read more

I have had the most frustrating and prolonged experience with City of Austin Utilities. My deposit refund was issued in April of this year and mailed May 2nd. I have still yet to see it. I have contacted COAU 10+ times and get different answers each time. They have sent it to 3 different address that I did not provide and have never lived at. They have told me they can't locate it. They have told me a supervisor would return my call (and never did). It has been almost 5 months. Not a single person I've spoken with has told me the same thing. I will NEVER use COAU again, which is unfortunate because the service I had with them wasn't terrible. But the incompetence/inconsistency of it's employees has pushed me over the edge. read more

I can't say enough good things about them, every time I talk to their customer service I listen and don't place my mistakes on them and they actually start cheering up. Like servers say everyone should work at a restaurant once in their life, I say the same thing about here. read more
