I have been meaning to write this review for some time because I think anyone looking for lactation consultants/specialists should contact Austin Breastfeeding. Sorry for the long winded review, but I seriously can't say enough good things! I reached out to AB when my daughter was ~4 weeks because every time I tried to feed her she would hysterically cry, pull off my breast and make choking noises. I was also concerned because when she did eat it was for really short periods at a time, so I didn't know if she was getting enough milk. I called Rachel at Austin Breastfeeding, and she was so nice. I felt like I needed help ASAP and Rachel put me in touch with Amanda who came for an in-person visit the next morning. Amanda was SO sweet and helpful - she immediately identified that I had a forceful letdown, which was difficult for my daughter to keep up with. Amanda made a lot of easy to implement recommendations, which helped immediately. She also did a weight analysis to see how many ounces my daughter consumed in a defined period of time. This gave me peace of mind that everything was going okay and working as it should. Amanda also followed up with texts and responded to some questions I had after our initial meeting. Fast forward a month - breastfeeding had been going well since my visit with Amanda and I was starting to feel more confident. Then all of a sudden I was having terrible pain both when feeding and also between feedings, and I had cracks that went around the entire base of both nipples. I was so close to giving up (pumping was excruciating too). Before I threw in the towel, I texted Amanda to see if she could help. She responded immediately and we had a virtual consultation that night (this was on a weekend, too). She helped me identify my symptoms as Thrush and walked me through immediate actions I could start taking to relieve symptoms before I could go to my doctor for formal diagnosis/treatment. She also recognized that the cracks were likely from using breast pump shields that were too small (I had started to pump a lot because I thought the pain I was experiencing from feeding was a latch issue). I was still in quite a bit of pain for the next several days, and she texted me every day to check in / provide more tips and tricks. I can honestly say without her support I probably would have given up. She helped me in so many ways - not just by identifying the problem but also supporting me emotionally. Anyways...sorry again for the novel review, but I feel like I need to pay it forward and give AB/Rachel/Amanda all the credit they deserve. Can you tell I would highly recommend them?! read more

Rachel was my life saver. Warning TMI I was unable to nurse my son due to not knowing how to latch properly and ended up with mastitis that the doctor was recommending surgery for! What! Fast forward to 18years....yes, 18 years, to the birth of my daughter. Determined to try again I was in screaming pain. Blood. Curl your toes dread. I called Rachel. Not only did she come to my house and walk me through the process - she sat with me and let me cry. It was not an easy process: I had to heal, supplement, and eventually with Rachel's support and gentle spirit I was able to nurse my baby girl for a full year! My experience with Rachel gave me the confidence to nurse my youngest son for as long as he wanted it! We had her guidance a bit in the beginning and we loved every moment! Shoulda started with her at the hospital!!! Her class was so valuable. I learned so much about latching and what warnings signs to watch for....the trick was to have her close to remind you IN THE BEGINNING when you are dazed from birth and your new package! Seriously, I recommend Rachel to EVERYONE. You won't regret it. read more

I took Rachel's breastfeeding class last month and I am SO thankful that I did so. My husband joined me, a little begrudgingly at first, but he even said after the class that he learned so much and was glad he went! I'm due in June so I've still got a little bit of time to put the information Rachel shared into practice, but I feel much more confident and informed about being able to breastfeed successfully once my son comes. It also helps me feel better to know that I have a great resource like Rachel to turn to post-partum, should I need any further assistance. Every Mom in Austin should take her class! read more

I had my fourth child in April and breastfed my three other children for 10 months or longer. I had soreness and engorgement issues with my previous three, but had worked through it for the first few weeks of their lives. So, I was expecting number four to be no big deal...I've done this three times before. By the time my new baby was three weeks old, I was having so much pain every time I nursed him (scabs, blocked ducts, burning for an hour after each nursing session). I would be crying every time he nursed because I was in so much pain. I was sure I was going to get mastitis (I had it several times with my third child), I desperately wanted to avoid antibiotics. I called a couple of lactation nurses one morning really hoping someone could help me. I live an hour from Austin (horseshoe bay) so taking four kids into Austin while feeling bad wasn't an option. Rachel was the only one that was willing to come to my house THAT SAME day. She drove an hour each way to help. She was very professional and caring. She gave me several recommendations that helped the clogged ducts to clear within a couple of days. She also followed up with an email with all of her recommendation. I highly recommend her. My son is four months old now and we haven't had anymore feeding issues. read more

Rachel was so helpful and so kind! I found her to be extremely knowledgeable and very giving of her time. I had worked with other lactation consultants while in the hospital after delivery and often felt overwhelmed by the amount of information they gave me very quickly. She took her time in explaining each aspect that she taught and made sure I understood. She also was willing to give me multiple options to help, not insisting that anything had to be done ONE way. I cannot recommend her highly enough! read more

Rachel is a godsend. I took her breastfeeding class at Central Texas ObGyn, and also had her come over for a lactation consultation after our little one was born. Both sessions were incredibly helpful. She really knows her stuff. She taught me how to get my little one to latch, which saved our breastfeeding. I love her calm, positive demeanor - even when my baby was screaming like a banshee, she was calm and confident. I also love that she's not judgemental. I met a ton of lactation consultants at the hospital, and many of them were very opinionated about the "right way" to breastfeed. Rachel is much more flexible, and is all about making sure that both baby and mom are happy. I would highly recommend both her class and her lactation consultation sessions! read more

Rachel is amazing and really knows her stuff. We had several hurdles in the beginning and she was able to identify and help us through them all. We'd gotten so much mixed (and rushed) advice from our pediatrician and the nurses at the hospital -- we were so lost and nothing was working. I was about ready to give up breastfeeding before giving her a call. With her help though, I've been able to exclusively breastfeed my now 5 month old. My only regret is struggling through those first couple weeks and not calling her sooner! She is sweet, positive and compassionate and spent so much time helping us to be successful. She spent a couple hours at our home, and came up with a short-term and long-term plan for us. Then she offered support through countless texts, emails, and over an hour on the phone after her visit and coached us through the really difficult times. Would highly recommend Rachel to anyone! read more

My daughter is almost 12 months old and I have breastfed her most of that time, in large part due to Rachel. By 6 weeks, Willa was not nursing and I was pumping around the clock, plus supplementing, and crying was my other main activity. We had worked with a lactation consultant when Willa was only a three days old and not latching, but after three visits she kind of gave up and just told me to keep pumping. We went to a second consultant who was very kind and recommended a few things but then was stumped. When she referred me to Rachel, I was really discouraged. It had been six weeks and I did not have much hope. Rachel came to my house and was so competent, caring and kind. She watched me (try to)nurse and was so encouraging. She recommended we see a pediatric dentist for a very subtle tongue tie and helped me try different nursing holds, and Willa latched for one of the first times ever. She reminded me that babies in the NICU and adopted babies who have bottles for months learn to nurse, and that Willa and I had plenty of time. She told me she was confident we would do it. We did it, but it was a lot of work--and Rachel was a huge part of our success. She answered texts and calls weeks and months after that initial consult and would not take any money--she answered questions and made recommendations and kept encouraging me. When we had a small crisis at 3 months, she came right over. At 6 months when Willa started biting, she responded immediately and helped me to keep going. I really don't think I would have had a breastfeeding relationship with my daughter without Rachel's help. She is so knowledgeable and warm, and generous. I highly highly recommend her. read more

If you are looking for the best lactation consultant, look no further. Not only is Rachel the sweetest and nicest person you'll ever meet, she also knows her stuff. And it's evident she truly loves what she does. I took Rachel's class at the end of my pregnancy because breastfeeding my baby was one of my #1 goals. I also wanted to have a contact for a lactation consultant in case anything went wrong after my baby was born and I needed help. And boy did I end up needing some help. After weeks of a crying (hungry!!!) baby and nursing around the clock and without any real help from our pediatrician, I called Rachel in tears. Rachel discovered a severe lip and tongue tie that my son had. After a simple procedure, things started to improve and continue to get better as each day passes. I don't know what I would have done without her. I love the way she explains things and she has such a calm, loving demeanor. And she is very patient as well. Let me give you a great piece of advice. If you are currently looking for a lactation consultant, but aren't sure if you really need it... or if it'll help, do yourself a favor. Don't wait. I wish I would have called Rachel the second things were going wrong instead of turning to our pediatrician. Breastfeeding is such a wonderful, amazing blessing to share with our babies. Do not give up! Get you and your baby the help you need! read more

Rachel Deckler is a fantastic lactation consultant. Her knowledge and skills go far beyond what normal societal information provides. I had made the decision that I wanted to breastfeed my baby exclusively. It was difficult at first, but with a lot of hard work I managed to be fairly successful. However, when my daughter turned three months old, my milk supply started to decrease, and I didn't know if I would be able to continue breastfeeding her. Finally, after struggling for two months, I called Rachel, and she talked with me on the phone for an hour walking me through the steps I needed to take to increase my supply. I tried her suggestions, and they really helped. I then set up a consultation with her, and she stayed at my house for several hours until she answered all of my questions and made sure that I was very comfortable with everything she had shown and discussed with me. After the visit, Rachel provided me with written information and followed up with several phone calls. She also walked me through introducing solids with my baby at six months. The amount of time that she spent with me was amazing. She was so caring and compassionate, and it is evident that she loves what she does. I am so thankful for Rachel - I'm successful with breastfeeding, and my very healthy and happy seven month old baby is doing great thanks to her! read more

I'm so very glad that I called Rachel! I'd seen a great lactation consultant in the hospital (twice actually), but things seemed to quickly go downhill when I got home and my milk came in. I had problems with fast let-down, my baby choking almost every feed, bleeding, and an excruciating latch. My hospital had given me a list of all the area lactation consultants, but Rachel was the only one on the list with both lactation and RN certs. I called her on a Sunday night, and she was able to come to my house (which was really out of her way) by lunch the next day. She weighed my baby before and after feeding, asked tons of questions about my history and delivery, worked on baby's latch, and made lots of suggestions to improve things in the short and long-term. She even called my doctor's office while at my house to get a prescription cream in the works, and it was ready at the pharmacy by that afternoon. Within 24 hours my pain was getting better, and she continued to check-in with me over the next 2 weeks to see how things were going. She also provided an invoice and suggestions on how to talk with my insurance about getting her fee reimbursed. I can't recommend Rachel enough and will definitely be calling her for another consult if we hit another bump in the road...or with a future baby! read more

I would highly recommend working with Rachel if you're having trouble breastfeeding. Rachel came to my house and was extremely courteous and friendly. She was so knowledgeable about breastfeeding, and dealing with postpartum life in general. Before Rachel's visit I was pumping and exclusively bottle feeding my newborn because nursing was too painful. With Rachel's assistance and advice, I was able to get my son back on the breast full time within a week of her visit. She will stop at nothing to help you meet your breastfeeding goals. As I said, I highly recommend Rachel, she is fantastic! read more

I contacted Rachel a week after giving birth as I was experiencing difficulty with breast feeding... and she couldn't have been more amazing! I felt so positive and empowered after an in-home session with her. She offered advice on how to adjust my latch to be more successful/comfortable during feedings and she was super responsive via text when I had additional questions. She was so warm and kind, and instantly put me at ease (when I was completely exhausted and overwhelmed). I would 10/10 recommend Rachel, and wish every new mom could have a support system like her! read more

Rachel is amazing! She is very patient, helpful and caring. She was able to come to my house the day I called her, and she helped me so much over the next week. She isn't pushy or judgmental -- she helps assess the situation and gives plenty of options. If it wasn't for her, I probably would have given up on the whole BF thing. I highly recommend her services. read more

Rachel came to my house to help with some latch issues I'm having with my little one. I'm still working through the challenges, but Rachel has been great to work with so far. It's clear she cares about the women and babies she helps. She's made herself available to continue answering questions beyond the in person consult and is committed to helping me succeed. read more

My husband and I are so glad we took Rachel's breastfeeding class. She made the class fun and comfortable. I walked away feeling SO much more knowledgable and prepared to take on (what I've heard is) one of the most challenging things for new parents. read more
