For the summer barbecue we often picked up Sams Butchery homemade pork, lamb and beef sausages including Italian and Chorizo flavours. The store is very big and refrigerators well stocked with top cuts of meat. If you have a special order then ask the team as they'll be happy to accommodate. Another reason I am a regular shopper here is that their prices are very reasonable overall and Sam does a good job at having weekly specials.

The peri-peri chicken was great for grilling, as we're the Moroccan-seasoned sausages, which had a sweetness to them. Definitely try the Toulouse sausage, a fantastic complement to your Saturday breakfast. I was pretty impressed with their efforts to source meats from farms they had relationships with, little posters around the shop telling you about the people responsible for raising your food :) Equally impressed with their curated selection of hot sauces from around the world - I need to send them a shipment of Dave's Gourmet sauce, that sh*t will destroy even the meanest of lads. All things considered, a lil' on the pricey side, but you definitely get what you pay for here.

Whilst not offering the same amazing array of sausages that somewhere like Westmere does, it's a really good local butcher: they concentrate on good cuts of meat done well. They also have a freezer that stocks items like frozen game meat and whole chickens. They're also pretty helpful here and will do their best to sort you out if they don't have what you want in the chillers right in front of you. The prices seem to be on a par with most non-organic butchers (I don't mean your Mad Butcher type bargain bin ones) so it's worth heading here if you'd prefer to support organic farming practices. They also offer a home delivery service as well.

But once I put that aside, because lets be honest, I want my fish and I'm not going to go open a can of chick peas, this is my fish shop of choice. They always have a lot of different fish available and it is always fresh and presented nicely. The staff are so helpful, they know exactly what they have available and will give you advice on how to cook it too. It's classic fish store practise too and they will give you your fish wrapped up in a blue plastic bag and newspaper. It's cheap as also, much better than the prices you'd get from a supermarket, let alone how fresh it is going to be. Great service, great product, great price.

The prices are cheap true but so is the meat ,I don't know if I would actually trust anything that came from this store. It really does feel like a meat market, and kind of seedy in a weird way. If you are after a cheap cut of meat, you would be better off going to a supermarket like Pak n Save or Countdown while they've got some decent specials on. What brought us in initially was the giant sign outside the shop that advertised a fantastic price on a 1kg bag of bacon pieces, it didn't help that we couldn't find them anywhere, and when we asked the guy at the shop he said they had run out. It would help to take the sign down in that case. While the guy working there was helpful enough, it wasn't his fault that he was the only one working at the time when we were in there. It's a decent size shop and one guy can only do so much.

I guess that's what happens when you live in Grey Lynn, they tend to do things really well and really differently. This butcher is in a great location if you want to buy your groceries and meat separately. It's right next to the Grey Lynn Countdown and means you can pretty much do both in one hit. The meat is really good too, they've won loads of awards for it. In this case, you can definitely judge a book by its cover as the meat is really good. And they often have a good special going on. I really love supporting local businesses too so it's great to be able to buy my groceries and support a local business without it being too much of a mission.

This local and affordable butchery has…read morejust opened up on the corner of John St and Jervois, and provides a much-needed meat shop in the area. Yippee, no more trips to Countdown to buy meat! I went in today after spotting a special on chicken breast in the window. The shop is very clean (tick) if perhaps a little sparse - it could do with some 'warming up' or a woman's touch perhaps... but they are still in set-up mode so hopefully they'll get there. The sales clerk was friendly and helpful, and even told me that I could 'request' certain cuts or meats and they'd do their best to get them in store. Tick for that. Now the only thing we need is a good fishmonger!
