Newtown Central is where the new and improved Foodworks is, near the Townhall Hotel. If you want a haircut which is good quality, quick and affordable, go here. Most places in the vicinity will charge $80 plus, no matter how little you want chopped. This is a neat $25-30, for an average cut. The best part is that the haircutters take their time and ensure that the cut is good, but are still quick enough to be able to squeeze a hair cut in on the way to the gym - not having to devote a whole afternoon to it. Staff are friendly and there are male barbers as well as female hair dressers. I have experienced both and both are good, although on one occasion one of the barbers wanted me to wait for a female hairdresser while he shaved male heads. His incompetence or lack of confidence, not mine.

Randomly stumbled into this place on one of my adventures to Newtown when I was in dire need of a good chop. The place is located very close to Newtown train station. Both times I have been here I haven't had to wait long at all before getting my hair cut. This was on weekend days which is surprising because a lot of barbers I have had to wait for up to an hour especially on a Saturday. They got male and female workers here and both did a good job. Newtown is a bit more edgy so they are happy to style the way I like with a speed line in my hair. They dedicate a decent time to each client and definitely don't rush it. They charge $20 which in my opinion is a very reasonable price for a good hair cut. Good spot.

I went to a preview for The Rocks Village Bizarre a few weeks ago and stood transfixed by an old…read moreschool barber's chair that had been set up on a raised platform within a type of auditorium hired out for the event. I know what those old-styled barbers chairs mean. They mean men with beards and badger-hair shaving brushes. They mean insanely sharp cut-throat razors tended by strong hands versed in the form and subtlety of a craft as old as man himself. They mean no more faux Italian barbers with their cheap hair gel and their insincere smiles, their short back'n'sides and their production-line philosophy. They mean MAN LOVE, dammit. Girls have their facials and their manis and pedis and whatever else it is they do to themselves, and what do men have? Nothing, save a bold, beautiful renaissance in the art of the old-school barber. Up I strode. And met Matt, one of the proprietors of Barber Supreme located just down the road down on George St in The Rocks. He sat me back, reclined the chair, lathered me up not once but twice with a hot towel applique in between and then went to work with his cut-throat razor, tending to my face with an expertise I've not experienced for maybe a decade. That half an hour made me feel like a man. A man who will not go quietly into the night, but one who will stand up proudly and say "Yes! I am a man and I am not afraid to be cared for by other men who know their way around a knife! Here is my throat! Take your razor, take it and make me beautiful you grand, bearded gentleman!" I walked out of there two foot taller and more attractive to women. Somehow I had learned how to speak Spanish and dance the Lambada in that time also. I wonder what mad man skillz I will be left with next time. Oh yes, there will be a next time.

Cleveland's reimagines the Golden Age of Man, an age of enlightenment and reason and cut-throat razors wielded with artful precision and coffee, strong coffee, brewed right there while you wait and sun streaming in through the window and relaxed informed chat instead of awkward small talk and a friendly community vibe and old leather Chesterfields and tiles and wood instead of gleaming chrome and the harsh impersonality of stainless steel. By gum, this is a place I want to hang out at on a regular basis. Continuing Sydney's cultural renaissance, the boys at Cleveland's Salon quit their day jobs and have created a mad sick little den right next to the Norfolk on Cleveland St. Part coffee joint and part barbershop, Cleveland's has landed the magic formula where it becomes way more than the sum of its parts. Pat Casey (of Pimps & Pinups London and Rock Hair Paris) is on the shears, and Harry Levy (ex Little Marionette, Porteno and Blackstar) waves the tamping wand. They're just proper stand-up guys, these two: they love what they do and it shows, it really does. Come play chess and suck on a flat white while you wait for your haircut in super vintage barber chairs - the really big, heavy, comfy ones that cup your ass lovingly like the hands of a big, gay, gentle giant, chairs you never want to get out of - that they found on eBay or somewhere. It's golden.
