Check with the Texas Board of Public Accountancy - This "CPA" has multiple complaints and actions against her license After a quick consultation over the phone with Aurelia in 2020, she assured me that she could help with amending a few past tax returns. (2017-2019) I had filed these myself and missed a lot of potential exemptions which in return would lower the taxes due. I paid her a deposit ( 9/3/2020) and Aurelia assured me her/her staff would get to work on amending these past returns. During the next couple years, I worked with the staff at the office who advised us on starting a s corp and helped with the process. Aurelia's office also took over preparing my taxes for the coming year. Her staff, Brian and Lissa, were helpful. Shortly after getting our S Corp paperwork filed, I was informed by another staff member via email that Brian was no longer working with Aurelia. The reason of his departure was never disclosed. Fast forward to 2022 and the amendments that I had originally contracted Aurelia to help me with still had NOT be completed. I kept in contact with various staff members but ultimately kept getting one excuse after another. Her "system crashed" at least twice during this time but I was assured the amendments were being worked on despite the setbacks. Aurelia herself never contacted me over these years of waiting. I should have known way before that this was a scam, but lesson learned. After years of the run around, I consulted with a new CPA and found out that there is a time limit of when tax returns can be amended ( 2 Year years) I was NEVER advised of this by Aurelia when during our initial consult nor over the years of run around her and her staff gave me. Now that so much time had passed due to Aurelia's lack of communication and shady business habits, none of the amendments could be done by anyone. i paid this lady for nothing I attempted to get my deposit back for months, but my attempts were ignored. I was advised to look Aurelia with the Texas board of Public Accountancy where I found that Aurelia E Weems has MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS filed on her and actions from the board against her license Feel free to check for yourself. TSBPA.Texas.Gov It was only when I brough these finding to Aurelia's attention and threated to share my experience with the board that she finally reached out to me. Within 2 hours of my email. Aurelia herself emailed me back apologetic but blaming everything on her "IT guy" and her "Server crashing". She also asked that I not turn her into the board as my complaint could ruin her business.... My check for my deposit was mailed the same day. BEWARE!!!! We used Aurelia for the first time one year for our taxes and paid for the service. A few months later we received a letter from the IRS saying we owed them not only the money the sent us, but an additional 2K! Why?Because the W2 that was filed and what Aurelia reported as my income was different. Aurelia had made an typo and did not enter in the true amount of my income on the forms that she filed on our behalf. When I called the office about this, I was told "you should have double checked my work and calculations." If I need to double check a CPAs work and math, why did I pay her to prepare it? I could have done it myself if I had to double check a CPA. I understand typos happen, but the way she handled it was unacceptable. She made excuse after excuse, and avoided my calls & emails which added to the frustration. Had she acknowledged her mistake and had a sensible solution to fix it promptly, there would have been a better outcome for all parties involved. However, due to her unwillingness to communicate with us to resolve the issue and lack of caring for what happened, I told her I would report her to the Texas Board of CPA (see the attached of her violations with them) if she did not refund us the amount that she charged us to prepare our taxes. After all we did not get what we paid for, accurate tax prep. She agreed to pay it, but then we had to keep asking her when she would be paying it. She continued to make excuses and putting us off for over a month before I finally had enough and gave her the ultimatum of either pay or be reported to the board and further legal action. Needless to say we never used her after this. Fast forward to today... Just so happens one of our W2s was prepared by her. That particular W2 was short by thousands of dollars of what we actually earned. We did not know this, because we had been issued an official W2 with the incorrect income. The issue here is that we had already filed our taxes and even received the return. We budgeted this return into some work that needed to be done, meaning we already contracted & started the work. We found out today at 5:00 p.m. on a Friday via a text! Not a call....a text! I had to try to track her down after-hours at this point, and wait for her to call me back. Given her previous track record of not communicating, there was concern she wouldn't try to make it right, but instead put us through the same issues we had before. She finally sent a corrected W2 on Friday night, but only after I demanded it. Her response "nobody is perfect, and mistakes happen." I agree with that, but how you own your mistakes is a reflection of the type person you are and the business you run. Getting a text at 5:00pm as you run out of the door of the office that closes at 5:00 is not a good way to handle the issue. Plus her mistakes both times were in the tune of thousands of dollars and could have been avoided by a simple double check by her that the data she was typing in the forms matched what information she had in front of her. After I amended the taxes, we now have to return all of our previous money that had been sent to us by the IRS and now we are still on the hook for the work that we had contracted. Her complaints to the board by others and the board's actions only substantiate what has happened to us with her.
