Masseys has been in the Swadlincote area for as long as I can remember, with a shop in the town…read morecentre, selling just about anything you can think of and a larger store selling big pieces of machinery like mowers, strimmers just out of town. They have now both been amalgamated into a larger superstore just north of Swadlincote Ski Centre. An impressive looking building with a large glass fronted façade, and a sizeable gated car park, this place is a DIY enthusiast and small business person's dream location! I wouldn't class myself as falling into either of those categories, but you can pretty much get anything for the home and garden from here, and the staff actually know what they're talking about, offering salient advice on request.
On entry, there are the largest ride-on mowers I have ever seen, costing nearly as much as my car! The lower floor is packed with a fantastic range of paint, wallpaper, bathroom and kitchen fittings, as well as workwear, and a sizeable cookware area in the corner, that would outdo many stand-alone kitchenware shops. To the back of the ground floor is an area for fencing and other outdoor products for your garden. Up the sweeping stairs to the second floor is largely dedicated to the garden too, with a fantastic range of mowers, strimmers, garden tools, barbecues etc. This is also the location of the Massey's café, which has a good range of hot and cold food, made to order, as well as home-made cakes and scones, the cheese scones being particularly fine. A good range of hot and cold drinks too, but be warned, the coffee is exceptionally strong! I like my coffee, but this is like rocket fuel! All in all a great store, but it is a bit of walk from the town centre, if you don't drive.
