We selected The Red River Lodge based on the Four Star rating by AA, as well as the friendly response to our inquiries by the proprietor Dolores. We were not in any way disappointed. The house is lovely, and the grounds beautiful and well kept. The first thing to strike us was the quiet and the smell of the fresh country air. I wish we could have bottled both! Breakfasts are traditional Irish with some modern additions, and everything was delicious. The host is attentive and extremely accommodating. Rooms are spacious, well lit, astonishingly clean, and very comfortable. You won't want to leave! The views of the Moy River will set up some wonderful photo opportunities. It's about a mile out of town (2KM) so you might need a car if you want to experience Ballina, but there are taxi services available in town. If you are movement impaired, be aware that this is a home and may not be wheelchair friendly, but there are ground level rooms available. Prices are very reasonable. It's not open year round, but when it is, you could not do better than to stay here!

We turned up on her doorstep one evening after seeing the lone five star review for Red River Lodge on Yelp. And we were so glad we did. The house is beautiful. Bright and welcoming, but still has a family house feel. At the front there is a really nice lawn and garden. You can also see the Moy River from the location. Dolores showed us around the house that was open to guests to use. There was very comfortable front room that looked extremely inviting. The breakfast room was fabulous and bright. I could call it a conservatory, but it was more than just that. The front hall, a room in itself, had water and tea station that you could help yourself too. The bedroom was comfy and warm. The bed was dressed fabulously in a plush throw and pillows. You could also see the river from here too, as it was at the front of the house. For breakfast, well that was top notch. There was a choice of Full Irish, scrambled egg or pancakes which you picked the night before. I went for the pancakes. Delicious. Coffee was excellent also. I said at the start that Dolores was a treasure. She is. She had so much to recommend to us in the area, which included a map of the town. She told us where to go for dinner and it turned out to be the best meal of our whole trip (see my Brennan's Lane review). We had a really nice conversation after breakfast before we departed. A lovely lady. It was 65 EUR for the two of us for one night and it was worth every cent.

This is why I loved this property -- the VIEWS. It was quiet. It was nice. Breakfast was delicious and the same waitress who served us the previous evening at the local pub served us in the morning. Right out of a movie. Nothing but positive things to say about this place. The innkeeper welcomed my wife and me and our two teenage boys. We had a two room family suite with two different amazing views. Highly recommended. Oh, and he recommended the local pub for dinner which was fantastic. The drive up the lane teleports you into a Secret Garden and once reach the hilltop, the view overlooking the town and mountains stops your heart. The cabins themselves are white stone and super cozy. Breakfast is served anytime at the main house where the fireplace sets a lovely ambience. With those memories in the back of my mind, I packed up all my belongings and high-tailed it over here a month ago. The place is just as amazing as I remembered. Her breakfast was yummy and Donegal is amazing. I say this about most of Ireland, but Donegal is just even more beautiful than those parts of Southern Ireland that everyone raves about. It is more remote, more green, more insane views. When we go back again, I want to rent a cottage in Donegal and just soak it in (and I am not a nature person). The Arches is approved of by the Irish Tourist Board and, according to their website, is recommended by Lonely Planet, fancy schmancy. The rates are currently listed at 65 to 70 Euros for a double room.

We booked a night at the Ardgort via Expedia for the evening after Paddy's Day. We weren't sure…read morewhat to expect given that Castlederg is very small. We arrived in the early evening to a near empty parking lot, but sat for a minute to take in the beautifully manicured grounds. We walked in to a very quaint home and made our way to the bar where we were greeted by John, the owner/sweetest man you will ever meet. He quickly checked our reservation and escorted us to our room and made sure our heat was set just so. The room was clean, tidy, and decorated in a manner that reminded me of a warm hug from your grandmother. We decided on dinner and a pint after ordering our breakfast for the next day and figuring out the wifi (it was a bit spotty). The soup was delicious, the steak was unevenly cooked but edible and a similar cut to what we had experienced throughout Ireland. For breakfast, my wife had the full Irish breakfast and I had the scrambled eggs and bacon. It was delicious and for both meals, John was the host, server, and bus boy. He wears all hats. We checked out soon after breakfast and he was so sweet and seemed sad to see us off, but wished us well and sent us with a gift. We will definitely be back if we're ever in the area.
