To start, Kalte Köstlichkeiten were a selection of housemade cold appetizers: smoked duck, pork, jellied beef, Wurstsalat (sausage salad), Leberwurst, boiled egg, hot smoked salmon, cured salmon, and three different soft cheeses, along with a side of bread and crispy potato pancakes (similar to hashbrowns). This was definitely my favorite dish thanks to the huge variety of flavors, textures, meats, and preparation methods. Since it was asparagus season during my visit, we ordered Spargel von einem Pfund, a pound of white asparagus served with butter and new potatoes. The white asparagus had a subtle, slightly sweet flavor, which was accented by the melted butter. The daily special was the Wildschweinbraten, slow-cooked pieces of pork covered in a creamy mushroom gravy, served with red cabbage and chewy, buttery potato dumplings. Finally, Martens Gartensalat was a huge mixed salad made of various leaves, along with pickled vegetables, rice salad, lentils, roasted broccoli, marinated mushrooms, dried root vegetable chips, and house smoked/cured salmon--a delicious, refreshing, crunchy mixture featuring so many different flavors! The service was very quick. My order was taken right away by a very nice waiter. I ordered a Gose beer, which was excellent. I was glad to try the local beer here with its very distinctive taste. Fancy tablecloths with paper placemats. statuettes around restaurant with low quality museum reproductions. Not sure what they were shooting for, but I do know the food was amazing! The resturant only had 6 people at tables we could see, and it is a large resturant. We asked for a table for 4 adults and 1 child. The server said we are fully booked all night no room. As I say there were only 6 people seated. We returned later to see how busy they were and at 8pm there were only 2 people seated in the resturant. I feel that for a resturant of that quality and prices to match they need some lessons in public relations. We had the distinct impression the server just didn't want us there, maybe because we had a child of 4 with us????????? On the Tuesday my family and I spent around £250 on a meal and I feel very let down by the service or lack of it on the Sunday.
