800 year old restaurant that still has specials from the 14th and 15th century on the menu
    Tyler C.

Food for tourists, a place for locals to drink. Great atmosphere in this basement bar and restaurant that has been in business since the late 1100's. This was where Angela Merkel hung out while a student in East Germany. Also where Goerte hung out while writing Mephisto Food was ok, small quantities and expensive. And cash only. Fun to order specials from the 1400's and get a history of restaurants. Then to come back for drinks the next time.

Faust in Mädler Passage above the restaurant

On the one hand, this is a touristy place and the food is on the expensive side. On the other hand, this IS Auerbachs Keller and is any trip to Leipzig complete without eating here? This is in the Maedler Passage which is marked by the large statue of Faust. We had the Mittag (mid-day) special which was Sauerbraten with dumplings and red cabbage. It also comes with a draft beer for 9 EUR. It was a good deal compared to other items on the menu. The service was friendly, they had English menus, the food arrived very quickly, and they can accommodate large groups. We sat in the Goethe room, but fortunately, did not sit near the barrel with Faust on it as every person takes a picture of the barrel and thus intrudes on your lunch.

Great atmosphere, lots of history if you know the story of Faust. Food was not the best German I've had but was good.

    Mephisto Bar

The Mephisto Bar is just another Leipzig cafe with entirely average desserts. You'll be wowed by the display case as you walk by, and let down the second you taste the first bite. On the flip side, they do have decent coffee. Oh, and did I mention the smoking chandelier with the evil laugh accompanied by thunder and lightning? The image of Mephisto that appears on the wall mirror after someone leaves the toilet? No? What about the shaking portraits? Also, you can smoke here. Inside. It's kind of a weird place.

    The main dining room.

It is a very nice place to seat and eat and look at the many murals on the walls with scenes from Goethe's Faust.

C'est la vie is by a wide margin the best fine dining restaurant in Leipzig that I have been to…read more We've been to Falco (2 Michelin Stars), which was at most a 1 Star performance. Granted, we were at Falco between Christmas and New Years Eve, when the A Team in restaurants tends to be on vacation We have been to just about every highly-rated restaurant in Leipzig. Max Enk (good wines, but just OK food), Mifune (novice, if not incompetent, Teppanyaki), etc. Sadly, there aren't a great many fine dining choices in Leipzig. Leipzig appears to be a culinary wasteland. Or so I thought. C'est la vie showed creativity and flavor that will hold up anywhere. I use Yelp a lot, but I don't write a lot of reviews. This restaurant wasn't even in Yelp and it most positively deserves a review. The foie gras, one of my staple dishes, was inspired. The pheasant cooked in spiced milk was prefect. The amuse bouche deserves an honorable mention. The sommelier was knowledgeable and patient. The potato essence soup was plain divine. Never had anything like it and I have been to more Michelin stars and Top 50 restaurants than I can count. Minus points for the bread and the first wine, both of which were boring. The latter might be due to the fact that our group had a bottle of Champagne prior, but the sommelier needs to take prior beverage consumption into account when selecting wines. Bottom line: clear Michelin 1 Star performance and utterly incomprehensible that this restaurant wasn't even listed on Yelp. Fixed.

We only had one night in Leipzig, just passing through. I had read one review for another nearby…read morerestaurant that claimed something like, "if you haven't eaten here, then you haven't been to Leipzig." I asked the lady at the front desk of our hotel if we would be able to get in there without a reservation. She told us no, we didn't want to go there because it was too touristy and overcrowded and loud. Instead, she recommended we go for dinner at Weinstock. I felt a little under-dressed in our traveling clothes (jeans and sneakers). This place is pretty fancy, dressy, linen table cloths and nicely folded linen napkins. The service was top notch - very professional, polished, well trained. The food was exquisite! My oldest son had wienerschnitzel every day during our 8-day trip across Germany and said the best was here. It was so tender he could cut it with his fork. I asked waitress what she recommended and she suggested the sea bass. It was excellent. I also had the garlic soup with scallops and it was heavenly! The food and service here were exceptionally good. I would almost consider making a trip back to Leipzig just to eat here. I try not to give 5-star reviews, but I give Weinstock 5-stars for the best dinner we had in our 8-day trip across Germany.
