Once upon a time purchasing white goods and big ticket electrical items was a considered and…read moreresearched consumer process. Options were weighed, pros and cons compared and alternatives deliberated over. Now its a drive to the local Good Guys and point at the biggest item just above your price range. Throw away consumer culture, cheaper imports and constant competitive pricing has reduced the level of consumer involvement in these purchase decisions as all the products are relatively same same. The service at The Good Guys is fine, the staff are friendly and only AS knowledgable as a tech savvy teenager. There is always a sale so no real feeling of "rip off" however the optional extended warranty for an additional $80 leaves a sour taste. My housemate and I just bought a TV from here and the experience was fine. No real hard sales and a marginally better product selection than neighbouring JB Hi-Fi.

Went in to buy a fridge. There was a decent range and the store person who helped us was able to…read moreoffer a slight discount on a product that was already discounted, which was great. However, very disappointed with the next part. There was an extended warranty offered for $80. I don't usually take the warranty because we already have pretty good consumer protection in this country (even though it is usually an extra hassle to get people to act on these). They told me that if you paid the warranty you would get $20 cash credits every couple of months and they could be saved up to use all at once during the year. Turns out that they completely misrepresented what this (what is known as the Concierge program) was about and how it worked. So I have missed out on 2 of the $20 credits because you have to use them within a few days of getting them (was absolutely not told of that). So my advice is DO NOT get the extended warranty and make sure you are well aware of the conditions of the Concierge program. Would have been okay if they hadn't lied to me about it. If I'd been told the real conditions very likely wouldn't have gone along with it.
