Though the cost is high (and my business does not offer a rider to cover hearing aids), the benefits have been worth the expense. As a high school English teacher, I am constantly confronted with a wide variety of student voices. Some are easier to hear than others, but having hearing aids has made that task all but incidental. Over the past ten years, I have had a renewed life in the classroom because now I don't have to strain to hear students with soft voices or hear students from across the room or in a crowd. In addition, my personal life at home and out with friends has been improved significantly because of my hearing aids. I can now hear what's being said in conversations, both in the quiet of my home or in the noise of a party or restaurant. I have also received great care from Hearing Solutions when I've had the need for followup appointments or had a hearing aid in need of repair. Knowing all of the ins and outs of both the mechanics of the hearing aid and the vagaries of company repair policies, Hearing Solutions has helped me navigate anything and everything related to my hearing aids.

I was referred to this business by Tru Hearing which works with my Humana Medicare Advantage Plan…read moreand offers $999 per hearing aid rebate on premium hearing aids. I visited Hearing and Audiology Services in Raleigh, NC on March 29, 2022 to order my first set of hearing aids. I told them I preferred rechargeable hearing aids and were shown the Signia brand which I did not know at the time I ultimately ordered them. I was told I could only get the discount of $999 per ear on the premium level. I then paid for them in full of $2,098 on my health care credit card. The hearing aids arrived approximately two weeks later. I was fitted, went back a couple of times during the trial period for adjustments. I asked the doctor on my last visit to complete a reimbursement form for my hearing aids which she completed. At no time was I told the hearing aids actual cost were valued at $7000 per the Tru Hearing customer service rep in August 2022 or I would never have ordered them. Especially if I had been told I would not get back money for the purchase. In addition I found out shortly before speaking to Tru Hearing customer service that this business had tried to double dip on payment by submitting a request for the amount of $2,098 through my Humana Medicare Advantage Plan. The request was denied. As any one else had a similar experience with this business? I am upset that this business smiled in my face while acting in my opinion in an unscrupulous way by not telling me actual cost of the hearing aids and then trying to be paid twice for them. I am also concerned because their client base seems to be senior citizens and they may not be tech savvy nor take the time to review their monthly health plan statements to see if there was an attempt to be paid twice.

In short: bad information and customer service…read more The whole story: I was referred to Dr. Clarke by my primary care provider for evaluation and treatment of tinnitus. I did some research about tinnitus causes and treatments prior to my appointment. During my appointment, Dr. Clarke's audiologist conducted a hearing test which revealed significant hearing loss. Dr. Clarke spent a reasonable amount of time speaking with me and answering questions. He informed me that my tinnitus and my hearing loss were certainly unrelated, that there were no effective treatments for tinnitus and that I would have to learn how to live with it. He stated that my hearing loss was significant enough to require hearing amplification but stated that I would need to wait 6 months to see if my hearing worsened first. I pressed him for more information because this information did not seem right to me. He finally admitted that there are tinnitus treatment centers at Duke and in Greensboro. He gave me a brochure for the program in Greensboro. I contacted the tinnitus program in Greensboro and learned that they were not covered by my insurance. I then learned that Duke was in-network for me. The difference in cost between the programs was several thousand dollars. Duke would not schedule an appointment without a referral from my doctor. So, I phoned Dr. Clarke to request a referral to the Duke clinic based on the need to save money. Over the course of 30 minutes, he repeatedly refused to make the referral to Duke. He would provide no reason for this refusal. Finally, he agreed to prepare referral paperwork but only if I would come pick it up in person. Oddly enough, this entire exchange occured via Dr. Clarke's assistant, who was relaying our conversation via instant message. When I was seen by the audiologist at Duke, she informed me that my instincts were correct. That there was a direct relationship between my hearing loss and tinnitus. She advised immediately fitting for hearing devices. She said there was absolutely no reason to suffer for 6 more months without treatment. I was disappointed that the information Dr. Clarke provided my about my condition was not consistent with current standards in the field. I was also angered by his refusal to provide me with a referral for the care I needed at a reasonable cost.
