I approved it, and then when I went to pick up my car a week later the bill was $2,075.88. An entire 1k OVER the estimate! I tried asking the customer service representative why the cost had gone up so much, but he said there wasn't much he could do about it. When I got home, I called again and found out while speaking to a manager that they had double-charged me for one of the items ($364), so they said they would refund me in the next few days. I waited a couple of weeks with no sign of a refund, called them again, and they said one of their admin people forgot to do it, so they finally issued the refund.

They advertised at that time as their mechanics really knowing Subarus and I wanted a garage (like everyone else) that would provide solid service without ripping you off like the dealerships tend to do. We had SO much work done on our car over many years here-they did everything from multiple brake jobs, to basic maintenance and timing belt and head gaskets, etc to keep us running for 145K+ miles as the car got older. Among many other positives, two things stand out to me: 1) if I needed them to address a new noise or concern such as a light going on, etc and called, they often suggested I drop by and briefly check it out and were able to address a quick fuse change or provide a quick assessment of what might be the issue, sometimes within the same day and this was never charged for. That's service you don't get many places. 2) I feel they are honest- there were times we had to decide to be strategic about some maintenance and they provide you feedback on what might be coming up maintenance wise, not just saying you need it done now unless it truly does need to be completed now and their best idea of timeframe to do it by. This allowed me to plan a lot more for the next $$$ to maintain the car and feel we were on top of the current condition of the car. Another example: there was a time I had taken the car to a dealership and that service advisor said I needed to replace both leaking head gaskets now and failed my Maine inspection. Got second opinion by this garage, they showed me the car on lift and informed me only ONE gasket needed to be done soon and was leaking but the other wasn't even needing to be addressed! Passed my Maine state inspection that day! Only negatives: it's small- that means longer waits to get into schedule during the week they are open (closed weekends) , only two seats right in the entry way if you opt to wait, have no courtesy shuttle or loaner car and do not do tires or alignments. All in all I would definitely recommend this garage and the cost is less than dealerships.

I took it to Berlin City Toyota of Portland Maine for service, and found that mice had gotten into the AC...Again. They were going to have to replace the AC motor for the third time in 2 years. The service plan wouldn't cover parts this time, and it was horribly expensive. Berlin City went above and beyond: they gave me a free rental overnight and a discount on the work done. Jeff Bridges shepherded the car through the very busy repair shop, and kept me apprised by text message as things moved along. Berlin City Toyota and Jeff Bridges have always provided excellent service, even when I sometimes get a little snippy about how long things take, and this time they went above and beyond. I'm really grateful.

I declined much of the work but needed to allow some of it so I could get an inspection sticker. The service rep I was dealing with had them perform ALL the recommended work. No updates provided to me during the process. No formal estimate I needed to sign off on. They just did whatever they wanted. He then charged me even more than they estimated. $7000 total. He pretended he never heard me say not to perform certain work. He also lied and told the service manager I said "do everything". I was expecting 3500 to 4000 total and ended up paying $7000. Had to pay it because they had my truck. Worst part is the service rep put his hand up in my face while telling me this was all my fault. Service manager was spineless and no help at all. They had my truck for a full day and a half while all of this unfolded. Be wary of this place, be very careful. I'll avoid identifying individuals to keep this somewhat civil. No more visits to Berlin City Portland for me. No more Toyota vehicles for me either. I cannot reward this type of predatory behavior.
