Now, I'm all for innovative cocktails, so I gamely took a giant swig. My bloody mary...my beautiful, spicy, salty bloody mary....was sweet. Disgustingly sweet. I nearly spit it out. Raising my eyebrow in a most sarah-like fashion, I ask him what exactly is in my drink. 'Tia Maria...it's the special ingredient.' I'm sorry, but a) I didn't give permission for you to mess with my drink and b) WHO THINKS TIA MARIA IS A GOOD IDEA IN A BLOODY MARY? I shan't be going to a pub that clearly doesn't have a taste for mixing spirits. Just bad judgement.

We arrived at a busy time and were given a drink at the bar whilst our tables were made ready. The staff were attentive...but stretched very thin, with what appeared to be two waiters and the manager serving the pub and the restaurant. I started with the charcuterie plate, which was very good (though quite a lot of rocket and not quite enough of the olive tapenade), moved on to the lamb fillet with panzanella (again with the rocket) and move on to lemon curd with raspberry sorbet for desert. The starter was pleasant though difficult to get wrong really. The lamb was a little overdone for my taste but my pregnant wife appreciated having hers well done (which she asked for), though it was still tender and the panzanella was lovely...there was another massive bunch of rocket on top of this, which is often foliage I could do without, but what the heck? I ate it anyway. The desert was perfectly sharp and sweet and cut through the rich lamb really well. All told, we were very impressed with the food and the portion size was just right. Service suffered from the lack of staff in an incredibly busy restaurant and was therefore predictably slow, but we didn't mind. The waiters and the manager were constantly pleasant and able to deal with the demands of our four year old. The pace allowed us to savour the food and enjoy the ambience and we certainly didn't feel rushed. All told, this is a really good little restaurant with some great food and is a real find. Highly recommend it!

The exceedingly high level of service, plus the culinary innovation and creativity was a surprise bonus. A selection of standard pub dishes were available for those of us that wanted them, but the White Hart had quite a few unusual dishes that we tried to our delight and satisfaction. Our server (who also identified himself as the manager) was tremendously knowledgeable, and answered all of our questions thoroughly. We had a wonderful time, would highly recommended it, and intend to visit again.

We enjoyed our meal on bank holiday Monday lunch time and sat and chatted for quite a while. The maitre d' came over and we expected to be asked to pay the bill as we had been there a bit too long. But instead she came and apologised that they had booked our table for a large party and asked if it would be okay if we could move over to a booth instead. She offered us a free drink each but we were absolutely fine and simply asked for the bill and moved while they brought it to us. As we were still having a good chat, they left us to it and made us feel comfortable and not as if they wanted us to leave. We finally paid and on our way out the maitre d' stopped us to hand us each a pack of Bill's buttons to apologise again. It was a small gesture but was so lovely and really made us want to come back.

We came down because we got a voucher, which believe it or not it is always a good way to find out new places. It turned up that they completely forget about us (not about the reservation) and so they didn't prepare what's on the deal. However, the manager promptly offered us to pick up whatever we would love the most from the menu. We ended up for two steaks, medium cooked to perfection tasty and tender with chips on the side. Our daughter got a portion of cottage pie that turned up to be enormous. Our wait was cut short with a nice home made pork liver pate, and considering the nice outcome of the dinner we decided to go also for a dessert. A delicious carrot cake and a banana and almond cheesecake (which was a bit too frosty frankly - and that's the only disappointing bit). Price-wise, I would say the pub is in line with the surrounding area, and I will come back again because I'd love playing with the darts that sits just walked past the main door.

Some excellent starters are on offer many if not all of them bearing the mark of individual attention (very much a rarity these days). Among the mains, I would single out the delicious soft-shelled crab, which came on a bed of crisp ginger and spring onion which most chefs would envy; some of the Chinese dishes (for example, beef w ginger and spring onion); the rendang (!); and any of the noodle dishes (we have tried four, and all four were well above average). We have eaten here four times now in the past month or so, always at lunchtime, sometimes Wednesdays, sometimes Sunday. The quality and value of the food compares well with what is served in London.
