Absolutely fabulous 3-hour lunch…read more This is the only Michelin 1-star restaurant we visited during our week's holiday in Flanders and Holland. Our last European 1-star experience was quite disappointing. This was the opposite - it was perfect. It was what one should expect from such a well regarded restaurant. It started with the excellent and welcoming service. Not everyone could help us in English, but whenever it was an issue someone showed up who could help. The meal was never rushed, but never slow. We expected it to take a while, and it did. The portions on the tasting menu were all generous enough so that we could have more than the one sample-size bite I dislike in many tasting menu restaurants. And the wine ordered as pairing with the food kept getting refilled! That was great, although I had to slow them down since I was driving yet that afternoon. I won't cover the whole menu, but rather give a sampling. A restaurant this good doesn't need my oohs and aahs about every course. We started with a mint bread with a cheesy and nutty pate. An early course was white Belgian asparagus with peas and small boiled egg yolks. Paired with a great white Bordeaux. One of the main courses was plaice, a North Sea fish which needs to be served fresh to be tasty. That it was, as tender and tasty as a Dover sole. Finishing with lots of desserts to pick from as well as a tray of Belgian chocolates. The décor was very modern and open, with tables well spaced. Again everything was perfect. We drove most of an hour just to get to this restaurant. I would recommend everyone consider this a destination restaurant, worthy of a long drive.

Frog Legs in Creamy Sauce ( 9/10 ) Melted in my mouth, the meat was so tender and soft, and the sauce was so creamy and delicious, and had a mix of amazing spices - it paired AMAZING with the bread, and I definitely filled up on it before eating the main dish. Creamy Mushroom Sauce ( 8.5/10 ) Similar base to the frog leg sauce, also so rich and creamy, would've been great with a little more mushroom added, but sauce made up for the lack of mushroom since it was so tasty with all the spices and cream - also paired well with the bread. Escargot ( 7/10 ) Nothing special, good herb butter and flavor and taste really good eaten with the bread. Whole Grain Bread ( 8/10 ) I love Belgian bread so much, it's in-between the chewy, hard texture of French baguettes and the soft almost mush of American bread - with a super bouncy and springy crumb, a soft crust, and a perfect ratio of crust to crumb. Lamb Leg with Couscous and Vegetable Stew ( 7.5/10 ) The couscous could've been a little fluffier but was still pretty good. The Vegetable Stew was on the thinner side - more like a soup - but was still tasty and had the normal vegetables in them (squash, carrot, zucchini) I personally prefer my stews on the thicker side so that it'll combine with the couscous better, but again, that's all up to personal preference so if that's what you prefer then the rating would be an 8/10. The stewed lamb meat was so tender that it fell right off the bone, and was so tasty that you could tell it had been stewing for a while just absorbing all the broth flavor. SERVICE : There was only 1 chef, who cooked right in the middle of the small restaurant for all of us to see, and we waited for 2-3 other tables to get their food first, waiting around 30-40 minutes for the food. The chef and waiter were friendly and attentive - making sure we always had our water cups filled. DETAILS : This restaurant was located on a street near where the annual "Onze Lieve Vrouw hemelvaart" or Assumption Day on August 15th occurs, so it was quite festive and chaotic when I visited, with huge crowds everywhere and everyone with a drink in their hand, but it was quite a fun experience - especially with friends - and I'd highly recommend!

We were greeted kindly, and although there is no English menu, if you are familiar with a little bit of French and/or Spanish, you should be good to go. My dad and I started off the meal with some vin rouge (house red wine) and ordered paella, while the brother got a set menu (Menu Casa) with the option for chorizo omelette, steak, and dessert of the day. The waiter worked with us and was patient with the language barrier. After a small cheese/charcuterie and bread plate, the paella came out, and it looked huge. After the waiter showed it to us, he plated it, and it was delish. Clams, crawfish, calamari, and a bit of chicken over buttery rice filled our stomachs. My brother's steak was nice and tender as well, accompanied by salad and fries (of course). What we didn't know, was that after the initial plate of paella, we still had more, as the waiter told us at the end. What they do is they plate a serving for you, then leave it in the back, heated for them to give you second helpings. However, we were too full to take advantage of the large quantity...darn - next time! For dessert, the brother opted for sorbet, and the citron was perfectly sour. The father got vanille glace (vanilla ice cream), which was also delightful. Overall, I am appreciative of the kind service of the waiter, the friendly atmosphere of the restaurant (the patrons around us conversed with us in what English they could), and yummy paella.

Since we were interested in a more simple lunch menu he cordially directed us to the bistro type restaurant in an old barn building on the property. We were greeted at the bistro, "Burgenmeester Quicx" with an extraordinary interior, so well appointed yet casual. The menu was wonderful with an array of sandwiches, salads, soups and burger. I ordered a small soup of the day, pumpkin soup, and by far was one of the best soups ever. Creamy, rich and tasty it came with two large chunks of a dark farmer's bread and butter. It had herbs on top and it was amazing. YUM! Then I had the roasted beet salad with nuts and greens, raisins and cheese. It was so good with a light dressing. It also came with the same bread and I was more than delighted. Four of us shared two bottles of sparkling water which was perfect. Service was excellent, so professional. This is a definite find outside Maastricht in the countryside bordering Valkenburg in Limburg, southern Netherlands.
