I will admit, I was a little intimidated walking into my first Jiu Jitsu class. I had zero prior martial arts experience, and as a woman in my mid-40s, I felt a little out of place. But everyone was friendly and the atmosphere was fun and encouraging so I kept going back. I've been training for a little over a year now and I absolutely love it. It's not at all what I expected. Jiu Jitsu is equal parts physical and mental and allows me to clear my head and stay in the present moment like nothing I've ever experienced. It's like an amazing workout paired with a couple hours of meditation. There is an endless amount to learn which keeps it interesting. And while I didn't start because I wanted to learn self-defense, I walk with a little more confidence knowing I could defend myself in a real world situation if I ever needed to. There are lots of great instructors, each with their own unique teaching style. The head instructor, Richard Giberson, is a black belt under Relson Gracie. He is super talented, funny and truly wants to help his students learn and progress. If you're curious about Jiu Jitsu, I highly recommend coming to a class and checking it out. Great instructors, great group of students, and an all around awesome school. 6pm Wednesday is a "Fundamentals" class. Our 7 year old daughter started in October. I had previously signed her up for basketball, soccer, gymnastics, cheer, and dance. She never really clicked with any of those sports. We were a little apprehensive about trying out yet another sport, but after her first class with Mr. Johnson, she was hooked! All the instructors are so knowledgeable and welcoming. Each has their own way of teaching which allows students to receive the information in various ways. They are all very patient and caring with the students no matter the belt level. In addition to learning taekwondo, my daughter is also learning how to be a better person. It is refreshing to see character education built into the daily classes. She has learned to apply this knowledge to her everyday life. It's nice to see my daughter excited about going to class. She can't wait for each class and talks about it well after it ends. read more

I think people need to be very careful when it comes to martial arts training. Many strip mall martial arts outfits are just there to part you from your money without providing you or your kids with anything of substance. These outfits use people's ignorance of what to expect from a martial arts gym to their advantage. This outfit appears to do exactly that. TKD Plus or whatever it is called now is not exactly a scam. It specializes in efficiently parting people from their cash while expending minimal effort to impart solid martial arts skills. So what do you get for your money at this outfit? Not very much at all. For one thing, what is taught at this school is not really Taekwondo, nor is it any identifiable martial art. To start, there are no patterns - no Koryo, Pinan, Palgwe, or Chan Hon patterns. Also, there is very little actual kicking and punching over the course of a workout. Typically you need to do hundreds of strikes (kicks and punches) per workout to get a positive training effect. Like anything else, it's in the repetition. At this school, I think on average there are perhaps several dozen kicks and strikes per class. This low frequency of execution is made worse by a near-absence of emphasis on proper form, such as the use of correct striking tools. Further, training for real self-defense is non-existent. Sparring is painful to watch. The upper belts employ no combinations; lack distance control; don't seem to understand footwork; and heavily rely on exchanges of single-shot lead leg kicks. If people can't spar well in a controlled setting, then they certainly can't fight effectively in real circumstances. So strike self-defense from the list. There is much signage about the availability of Brazilian Jiu-Jutsu. Yes, you can get that, but not as a normal part of your fees. It's extra. The instructors are dressed informally, sometimes in shorts. Considering the dollars paid for tuition, one could at least expect an instructor to come dressed for the part, instead of looking like a Margaritaville regular. The exception is testing day, when suddenly the instructors are decked out in all their finery. And about testing... Most martial arts programs have 10 or so belts to black belt. Each belt progression requires a test, and a fee. Testing fees is a major source of revenue for martial arts schools. There is nothing wrong with that. However, this outfit takes paid testing frequency to a new level of cost for the student. And here is the outfit's core gimmick. I think there are about 15-16 tests (each with fees) to get a black belt. Most tests in other schools are every 3 or 4 months. Here the testing is every two months. So you can get a black belt in just over 2.5 years. But it won't be a legitimate black belt. Since you've been poorly trained, you'll need to continue training to get your elementary kicks and punches to a reasonably proficient level. And Lo!, there is a program for that - a second degree black belt! And then a third degree black belt! But shelling out money does not make you an expert, if the training you get is sloppy from the get-go. Failure to acquire fundamentals in the beginning of any endeavor just means you'll have impaired progress later. Note, an intensive and rigorous 2.5-year program is perfectly legitimate for a modern TKD black belt, but intensity and rigor do not apply here. Then there is extra money for a required "sparring clinic" and such. And there is an optional extra testing fee to get certified according to other standards - makes no sense, other than to further part folks from their money. Just to make things worse, the actual number of tests to a black belt is not clearly stated. Nothing is shown on the website, nor are written progression materials outlining the path to a black belt provided. Communication is limited that way. The actual subject matter content of skills required for each test is also not written down - so students can't really work on their practice at home. Focus on testing starts to spool up about 2 weeks prior to each test, when suddenly students have to practice the 6 or so things required for the test. The rest of the time is spent doing unspecified other stuff. It is interesting that the first three tests move the student from white to yellow to green belts, giving a sense of momentum. Then, once the students are committed, the testing breaks down into three tests per color belt. Three tests for blue, three tests for red, three or four tests for brown, etc. Very interesting. I have practiced martial arts for years and train here because the quality of instruction is high, there is no egotistic attitude from the instructors or students unlike most dojos, the price is most reasonable and there are plenty of class times to choose from. Many dojos have huge fans blowing directly on students which as a medical pro I can say is not good for health, but this one has smaller ones that work just fine without making the students sick with a wind attack. read more

My 5 year old has been coming here for about five or six months, and she really loves it. We hope she keeps coming for years to come. Normally she's really shy at preschool and in front of strangers, but she loves to come here and listen to instructions, learn new positions, and overall just have fun. And the chance to work hard and earn new stripes/belts really keeps her engaged. All 3 instructors are great in their own ways. read more

My 5 year old has been coming here for lessons for a little over 9 months. We couldn't be happier! Mr. Johnson is VERY great with the kids and very friendly. We're moving to NC, and he went out of his way to look for centers in the area that my son could attend. Ms. English, Ms. Johnson and Ms. Davis are just as great! This is a wonderful center and my son looks forward to coming to the classes. They have a variety of classes and schedule. And the price is very fair, considering if you have time, you could attend all the scheduled classes. I think the only "negative" thing-which doesn't affect the center, is parking can be kind of crazy. I really can't say enough great things about this place. read more

She switched over from another Korean marital arts and was able to stay the same belt color. We started with my oldest son who is now 8 attending Taekwondo a couple of years ago. I have to say my first observation of the class had me extremely excited. The respect and discipline that was required of the kids was quite impressive. On top of that, the skills that they were teaching my son was very cool. I really didn't know much about Taekwondo. What got me even MORE excited was when he was coming home straight from Taekwondo and rolling off of his mouth was, "yes ma'am, yes sir" without me having to remind him. This had me doing cartwheels in my mind. WE WERE IN! And he too was also excited about it and looked forward to going...so even better. Following suit in joining was my 2nd oldest who is now 6. He started at 5. It was a rough start for him merely because his personality contained a bit more timidness, felt intimidated about being around the big kids, and lacked some self-confidence. So much so that when it came to his first awards ceremony (which should have been exciting) to get to the next belt level he was very nervous about going in front of the class when his name was called out that he didn't want to do it. Mr. Johnson, Ms. Davis, Ms. English and other instructors have been so loving, so patient and encouraging with him. When you have instructors that go out of their way to nurture your child when going through difficult challenges you know you are in the right place. He is really blossoming here at Taekwondo and it is so exciting to see! Now my twins. I have 4-year-old twins - boys. This is their first year attending Taekwondo. I was just holding my breath waiting to hear how their first day went. These guys can be a bit rambunctious and I knew what was to be expected of them. One of them was excited because he sees his older brothers at home sparring and the other was indifferent. He has more of the timidness side of him just like his older brother. The first couple of weeks were definitely an adjustment as they learned very quickly that at Taekwondo following instructions and showing respect is not an option but rather a requirement. The life skills these guys are learning at such a young age is priceless. Here is an example, it was time for testing. Testing occurs when you get all the required stripes that you work so hard for so that you can get to the next belt level. One of the twins was not allowed to test because he was being disruptive and not following instructions. Talk about being disappointed. Well, he learned very quickly that if he wanted to test (which he really did) he needed to follow instructions and do as he was told like everyone else. He was given an opportunity to think about his actions and come back and test...he did so successfully! That was a big lesson to be learned and I have no doubt that he will not forget it. I just can't say enough about this place. The commitment that the instructors have for our children is just amazing. I look forward to seeing the continued growth, confidence, physical skills, and love for the art of Taekwondo that my kids are gaining. read more

My son's 5th birthday was made memorable thanks to Tae Kwon Do Plus. The birthday organizer, Dixie, was fantastic with the kids and she had everything that was needed to make the party happen! She even did the decorating! The party package includes the cake if you choose! What a deal! The staff was great at engaging the kids easily and made sure that everyone was included in the fun. It was nice to have a place for the adults to mingle without the risk of being in the middle of the dodge ball game! The kids were exhausted after which as all parents know, this is a sure sign of a successful party. The highlight for my son was getting to break a board! Our son has been a student of Tae Kwon Do Plus for 2+ years and loves it! The entire staff, Mr. Johnson, Ms. English, Mr. and Mrs. Davis and Mr. Fackler are all above and beyond at teaching this great skill.
