Kind of a small station for such a busy city. Our train pulled in from Firenze at around 10 pm, but…read morethere were quite a few people milling about at that time. We exited the station towards the taxi stand, by the time we got there the two cars that had been waiting got fares and sped away. We stood in the queue for a few minutes, hoping a car would pull up, and after several minutes, one did. By then we had a line behind us, of travelers also waiting for a ride into the city. Note, they did have quite a few of the rental scooters, which I briefly considered before realizing a) I am too old and was too tipsy to work one of those; 2) we weren't familiar with Italian driving laws and iii) we had no idea where we were going, and navigating a new city at night while on top of a rental scooter just seemed like a terrible idea. The station was much busier the next day, when we returned for our trip back to Firenze. They have a few benches along the tracks, but not enough for every traveler waiting for a train. Also, huge kudos to the station worker who sought us out as we waiting at the track for our train. There had apparently been an announcement that the train we were waiting for had been moved to another track, which we either missed completely or heard and didn't understand. Thanks to her we caught our train and made it back to Firenze on time.

It's straight from the 1950's with that vintage feel. We were tired when we arrived at the front desk, and were greeted by the friendly staff. They were so kind and hospitable, and explained the way to go to the historic center, and which bus to catch. They also have bikes you can take out, free of charge. Near the train station in Verona is definitely not a beautiful area, it's pretty depressing...but the Hotel was like a charming vintage oasis. I loved the separate twin beds with reading lamps, as I was traveling my son, and the beds were quite comfortable as well, and the water pressure of the shower was really great. But the true gem was Alessandra at the front desk! As I was waiting to ask her a question I watched her switch effortlessly from English to German, and of course her native Italian. I loved her genuine and cheerful disposition, and as we left, I told the manager that Alessandra was a true treasure. It's nice to arrive from long travels and have everything taken care of. That was the Novo Hotel Rossi for us, and the price was quite good as well. Grazie Mille!!

La Magnolia is one of the first B&Bs in Verona. It is not too far from the train station. From the…read morestation, it is a little difficult to find, however once you pass the major roads there are actually brown signs directing you to it. It is located in a neighborhood. When you book, the owner asks to tell her when you are to arrive so that she can be present to let you in the locked gates-she lives at a different location. Martina is sweet and knows a little English, Spanish, and French. Her daughter helps her run the business and understands more English. Martina's daughter checked us in and she was wonderful- she gave us a map and circled all the best places to go in Verona- it really did help. We had a private room and private bathroom. At first the shower temperature was freezing but we let them know and they raised the temperature (they had lowered it for children staying there). The air conditioning worked well and there is a tv. There is a bidet in the bathroom and the shower has a rain shower in it! Martina provides you with two towels and two hand towels every day. We were also given small travel sized shampoo and conditioner. There is body wash located in the shower as well. Breakfast was a perfect time to talk to Martina and the other guests. She really does care about you and makes sure that you have enough to eat and are happy. Food includes meat, bread, Nutella, croissants and coffee. Downsides, the outdoor seating looks better in pictures. The WiFi is VERY spotty- be prepared to use your cellular data. Verona also offers free WiFi at certain areas and that didn't even work. The train tracks are also located RIGHT behind the B&B so if you are a light sleeper this is not the place for you. The trains move constantly and every now and then when they stop they sound like someone screaming. I really did enjoy my stay here though it was on the expensive side and I always felt safe walking back after dark.

Other than that, it is right next to the train tracks, so they keep you up all night. Air conditioning did work, but the wifi didn't. My girlfriend took a cold shower, and couldn't figure out how to get heat. Turns out, they "turned the hot water off because there was kids staying there before us".... ummmm, ok? I guess? Not really a great reassurance, but whatever. The owner seemed very friendly, although she spoke veryyyyyyy little English. The daughter was great as well, and spoke more English. Apparently that is a thing (helpful tip incoming): older generations speak Italian, and then also are taught other languages like French and German or Spanish, while younger generations are taught Italian and English. And breakfast was included, small breakfast.... kitchen pastries and coffee, some cereal. All in all, a good experience, but bad location.

Two nights here, it is quite good. I do not have status with the IHG chain but I had booked direct so we were put in a twin bed room on the first floor facing the street. Despite that, there wasn't too much street noise and the balcony overlooking the main roadway was nice to sit on for a bit. The hotel does not have its own parking and instead contracts with a parking deck about 20 meters further along that charges a pretty hefty €25 per day. The room was clean and comfortable. We did not put out the do-not-disturb and so the room was refreshed while we were out sightseeing. Coffee service, fresh towels and the beds were made. They did a good job. Breakfast in the -1 level was very good though I don't know that it was €15 per day good. It's only €10 if you book it when you make the reservation. Typical European continental breakfast with eggs, bacon, breads for toasting, lots of pastries, fresh fruit, cereals, sliced ham and turkey and cheese, etc. Coffee is made to order and I was able to put away a pretty decent sized pot of Americano while waiting for my travel mate to wake up, up stairs. The hotel is not quite centrally located but there are restaurants nearby and the Verona Arena is only a mile away down the well traveled boulevard. Bathroom consisted of full sized shower and separate bathtub with television so you can soak and relax. Front desk attendants were friendly and extremely helpful. I found the easiest way to get here from the train station was by taxi ($10 euro inc tip). Google Maps transit guide cannot be trusted. Buses with route numbers greater than 100 do not stop in Verona as suggested by Google. The bus shelter is confusing to a first timer. Not sure when to stand at island B1 or B2. I got on the 51 which listed the correct direction stop on its board only to find that it meant where it was coming from, not going. Not sure why I care where it's been but after 3 stops I knew it was definitely going the opposite way that I was supposed to be. The walk may be 15 minutes but it's uneven surfaces and across a major roundabout intersection. In short, spend the ten.
