They had us at "hello" and a sticky bun…read more It was three years ago that my brother and I were looking for a safe and happy home for our mother who has advanced dementia. For nearly ten years, my father had tirelessly cared for her as the disease slowly, insidiously took her away, but he was reaching his limit. Admittedly, we were in a bit of a panic since we had seen several places in the area that were an absolute no. Enter The Palms. We decided to give it a try. No planning, no phone call. We just walked in. And right away, immediately perhaps, we knew this was the place. Before we had even taken a tour. We felt it. Specifically, we felt and saw the warmth and the liveliness. People socializing, playing games, happily going about their lives. This was home. As for the sticky bun? A delicious accelerator. My brother may have eaten more than one. He still talks about that bun to this day. Since that day, I could write chapters about how the staff at The Palms has become a trusted and loved extended family, but I will just highlight some of what I think make this place so unique and special. At the risk of sounding like the opening song from Cheers, everybody knows your name. The staff knows what my mother's favorite colors are, what her favorite flavors of ice cream are, that she has a very sarcastic wit and that she loves Bingo. Not only does everyone know my mother, but they all make a point of knowing me, my siblings and our spouses which is challenging since we do not live in Florida. When we walk into The Palms on any trip, staff members will find us just to say hello. Just two weeks ago, as the COVID quarantine rules were lifting, I flew down to see my mom. The staff worked together to make sure that I was able to have quality time with her, safely. On this Sunday afternoon, more than 10 people came by from the Executive office, Dining Service, Nursing and Personal Aids to say hello and to see how our family was doing. A simple gesture but one that rarely happens today and one that I won't forget. Throughout my life my parents called me almost every day, whether I liked it or not. Since we have lived most of my adult life in different states, it was their way of staying connected. While today, my mother is not making those calls, I still have that exact connection thanks to the staff at The Palms. I know if she is having a good (or bad) day, if she's sleeping late or under the weather. It is not uncommon that I will talk to at least two staff members per day just to give me an update on how she's doing, tell me what she may need or to set up a video chat with her. And most importantly, they call when anything goes wrong. For my mom, that was four days ago when she fell and was being sent to the hospital. The team called immediately and then followed up. The last message I had was from the Executive Director to let me know my mom was coming back and was fine after she had personally called the hospital herself to inquire. She texted me this message at 10:48pm on a Thursday. That kind of dedication at every level, from every team member, is not exceptional at The Palms. That is their everyday mode of operation and it is incredible. Finally, the strongest endorsement of The Palms I can give comes from my father. His love and dedication to my mother over the last ten years were both a heartbreaking and beautiful experience to witness. Over the last year, his ability to visit with her became more limited as his strength weakened. His regular lunch visits became more sporadic and he found it hard to sustain the energy for extended visits. As he grew more ill, he agreed to move to the D.C. area to be closer to my brother and me, knowing he would have to separate from my mother and most likely would not see her again. He trusted The Palms with the most precious person in his life. Just before he died, he asked me to keep my mother at The Palms because "it is her home and she is happy there." Even though her children were not local and he would not be with her, he felt strongly that The Palms provided the safety, happiness and support she needed. And, he was right. It is her home and she is very happy.

When I helped select this place for my "person" I thought it would work out! I was told all the…read morethings I wanted to hear....now...I would advise anyone considering this place...Ortega Gardens...to get everything in writing...and make sure it's not in invisible ink! For example...Doctors on staff or at least on call? Oh, yes I was told. Not true. A Nurse practitioner was it...and if my "person"had a problem it turned out to be days before the issue was addressed and medication was disbursed. And speaking of medication...my person was given so many drugs his eyes were going in different directions and he didn't even know what planet he was on. If he moved any slower he would have been going in reverse. Trying to keep a watch on the drugs was becoming a full time job. Meanwhile seeing my person like that was heart breaking. Other issues...the food was supposedly made on the premises...but I was never shown the kitchen...and I did ask...more than once! When I questioned what was served for dinner the answer was usually mystery meat...and no salads or fresh fruit...and small portions....no seconds...but nobody cared. I was told if my person needed to go to a medical appointment transportation was promised through the facility...but the one time I requested this I was given the run around. It turned out not to matter as my person was sent to the ER for the 2nd time in five months. I took the hint and placed him in another facility where he was cared for, the food was prepared on the premises and was good and plentiful...and best of all...his mind started working again...his eyes cleared up...he knew where he was and we could have a conversation! Be careful when entrusting the care of your loved ones to any facility....visit often and keep your eyes wide open....and don't believe everything you are told.

Many of the units have screened in back porches with doors. Some of those units have a sidewalk right up to their back door. I wish they would make all the units have this added luxury. A standard. My apartment has a nice screened in porch with a door that opens up to the back field, but there is no sidewalk and there is quiet a drop to step down. Visit WL look around. It is very pet friendly. Most of the med-techs and LPNs are very kind. You always have a couple employees not happy. The Dine room has made changes for the better, but meals are served at specific times. They are doing maintenance on the buildings to restore them back to their "beauty ". I wish they had pictures hanging of this place opening day till present day hanging. Know:If your independent living make sure you understand your independent and will need to call 911 if you need help or have fallen. Assisted living is may what you need. It's nice though ,here you can transition from independent to assisted to memory care if that's what you need. There are activities here but is a slower pace since a couple residents are nearing 100! But thats ok. The young ladies at the front desk are a delight. Always NICE! I say give it a try here, bring your dog and if it's not for you, it's ok. I wish they would put a speed bump or two in the front and here in the little back road... I know you are in a hurry but older residents on scooters or walking their dogs can't always move as fast as you. And then there are the geese- I love watching them, but some people are just mean and speed up when they are moving so slow... clipping the goose. it's not nice.... A slow sign and speed bumps might help. or a funny sign saying "geese crossing". Any humor at a retirement community is a must. I post good and not so good just because this place could be the best retirement community, the way it's laid out. Walmart , Vet, Food places near the entrance. that's a good thing. hope this helps you decide or at least come look.

She transitioned to the memory care side where it was even worse. The sink she had was detached from the wall, her room was barely ever cleaned properly so there were ants crawling everywhere, the place has a disgusting smell. There were times where maybe the toilet overflowed and the water would just be sitting there for idk how long. The staff is very disorganized. There really weren't any activities for those on the memory care side they just sat in chairs all day staring at walls or whatever was playing at the time on the tv. It was like pulling teeth to get them to communicate with the next facility we were moving her to. There was one staff member who took an interest in making sure she was okay and that was very much appreciated. This is the perfect place to leave your loved one if you don't like them.
