The carpets smelled so bad that I genuinely started feeling dizzy while setting up for my bride. The loading dock is right by the dumpster area, and the smell back there is overwhelming. There was garbage juice trailing from the dumpster area toward the kitchen where they prepare the food, which was honestly shocking to see. The entire area looked neglected and unsanitary. The vendor entrance hallway had two fly traps that were completely covered in dead flies and looked like they hadn't been changed in a very long time. It was disgusting. What bothered me even more than the cleanliness was how the staff treated vendors. We were treated like second-class citizens. I was told I wasn't allowed to use the main bathroom and had to go all the way to the basement instead. I've worked at many venues and have never experienced separate bathrooms based on whether you're a vendor or a guest. I also got lectured for arriving 30 minutes late to set up, even though it had absolutely no impact on the event and the party wasn't starting for another six hours. Despite having plenty of time, we were constantly rushed throughout setup. The entire experience felt unnecessarily hostile and unprofessional. They made sure to remind every vendor exactly where we stood. If you're looking for a similar venue, save yourself the headache and book Greentree Country Club instead. The staff is welcoming and respectful, the venue is spotless, the views are beautiful, and the overall experience is everything Surf's Club should strive to be. I won't be returning to Surf's Club, and based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend it.

We were so impressed when we had our taste test it was almost hard to eliminate the options. Definitely go with the steak and fried onions! Also, the salmon with sweet potato was amazing and made me really like mashed sweet potatoes. One thing I was worried about was the smell of the fresh mulch outside during our visits but thankfully, that was not a problem during our actual wedding day! The venue came with my very own bridal attendant, Breanna who was very knowledgeable and learned how to bustle both of my dresses on her own without my asking, which i was very impressed with! I'm so grateful for her in making the day run so smoothly and someone to chill with when I had a moment to myself. Overall, the venue was amazing. The stair is really shaky and there are no lights in Stairwell ( they don't have elevator in the building), so it's really dark esp in the night. This review is of how this event coordinator organized our wedding ceremony and reception this September, at a venue called T Studio in Astoria (you can see amy review of that venue separately). Things they organized well: * For the most part the package is reasonably priced and a lot of the things are included (e.g. DJ, photographer, staff, décor) etc. However, as we've learned later (see below), this organizer takes on more than they can logistically handle and it would have been much better if we actually organized some of these elements ourselves. * The food -the restaurant this coordinator ordered catering from was very good. * The décor was in line with what I wanted, BUT...see the list of "buts" below... Things they organized.... NOT so well: * There were multiple warning signs early on that this wedding coordinator is not very detail-oriented. Communicating with her was hard--she took a long time to reply to emails and things were disappearing in the thread. For example, she sent us our wedding contract three times, each time with errors in it. * They set up very late so there's no chance to check everything--and that's too bad. For one: THEY MESSED UP THE TABLE SEATING. I provided a correct seating chart way in advance and we only had 8 tables (!). And somehow they couldn't get that right and put the same guests at two tables, which completely messed up the whole arrangement and resulted in two of our guests actually eating dinner in a back room next to garbage cans (!) because they wanted to sit together. To make it worse, the coordinator was trying to deny it in a conversation with me later. * Multiple things that were part of our package were missing during the event, including a coffee station and a water station. I myself (as bride) had to run to the bar every time I wanted a glass of water, and towards the end of the event the guests informed me that there is no coffee! Which was in our package! They refunded us for the cost of the missing items ($125! Out of ~$14K), but well, we only had one wedding. * The bar RAN OUT OF WINE before the event ended. Already the bar under this company closes 30mins before the end of the event, and all we had on offer for wine was house red and house white. * The ceremony took place on the terrace: there was a loud air conditioning unit that practically drowned out our vows. * I wanted to add a champagne reception to our package, and at the beginning I wanted to manage it myself, but our wedding coordinator offered to take care of it for an extra charge. BIG MISTAKE. They did not get enough champagne and were serving glasses with embarrassingly tiny amounts of champagne at some point. I would have bought the bottles myself had I known in advance! * In general, the staff assistance was non-existent. My parents and multiple guests reported that the staff offered no guidance, the guests were confused as to where they were supposed to go or what to do. * We paid for "passed hors d'oevres " as part of our package, which were supposed to be distributed before the ceremony. My parents reported that a waiter showed up 2-3 times out on the terrace with a small plate of hors d'oevres which lasted for just a few people. * The décor was also included in our package including tables and altar décor. The wedding coordinator did provide a vision board and we discussed getting specific things, like fairy lights and lighting up the aisle with candles/lampions. There were neither. The coordinator said she made a budget decision to not include those -and did not inform me about it! But based on all the other fails my guess is that she simply forgot. The part that particularly irked me was: I found a Love-shaped balloon on Amazon and offered to buy it and bring it for decoration, but the wedding coordinator said she'll take care of it. You've guessed it...there was no balloon. I could have easily done that myself. * My general impression is: when you're planning a wedding, you can't possibly think of every single thing as the bride. That is why you hire a wedding organizer to take off some of the load (and pay them money for it!). Foresight and support was completely lacking from this vendor. I had to think of everything myself and spell everything out, and on occasion even the instructions I gave them were not executed correctly. From things I didn't spell out but I had hope that they will interpret them, here's one example: we provided little bottles of bubbles for guests to use during the ceremony. The event coordinator distributed the bottles on chairs for the ceremony, but provided no instructions to the guests to use them. Result: there were no bubbles during the ceremony or at any point. You just expect that an experienced wedding coordinator would know to "manage" the crowd and give out instructions. Needless to say, I cannot recommend this vendor.

The space is huge and you are really able to transform it however you'd like although the managers do help you with some standard seating layouts. We had 120 guests and the size was just right. We had plenty of room for seating buffet tables and dance floor. They even provide a bartender for you to use that night. I'll post some pictures which tell more than I can in the writeup but it's definitely worth 5 stars, and the main reason was John. When crap went wrong he calmed us down. Took us drinks and food in the back and to our table. Reminded us to relax and enjoy. Our DJ which we brought on our own was late and I started to get worked up but John cooled me down. He also helped us plan and figure out a lot of things as we had not a clue in the world what we were doing. He made it worth every penny. They also have many vendors to recommend should you need them. We used theirs for the tables and chairs and also the waitstaff. The prices were reasonable compared to other vendors and trust me, we checked. If you're looking to do a wedding on a budget and paying for yourself, you should use the Aurora Gallery.

Now, we went to see the space the next day. Not only did she now show up or communicate that she wasn't showing up, she sends someone who if not mistaken, is her dad and he was late :). He was very nice I must say. Probably the only pleasant encounter I had the entire process (and the reason I actually booked). Being that he couldn't answer any in depth business questions, we followed up with the owner with questions. It was pretty cut and dry, but in my mind I'm thinking this is a Black woman business owner and I rather give my people my money. She asked what time would we need the space because events after midnight requires security. I told her I'm looking to have my event 8-midnight or 8-1am, would that mean that I have to get security for 1 hour? She tells me, oh you would need it from 8pm-1am for an additional $130. Yea ok miss ma'am because that's NOT what you just said lol. Keep in mind, this event space is NOT cheap. It's $2500 PLUS a $300 refundable deposit if the venue is turned over clean and on time. I had my cousin speak to her from day 1 because I knew deep down in my soul I was going to curse her out for being rude, condescending and unaccommodating. Fast forward from October to January. The venue was booked from 6pm-2am as she only allows an 8 hr slot. That gives me 2 hrs to decorate the space. I asked my cousin to ask if there's anyway we can get in the space any earlier she says $150. My cousin went back to her to plead, asked if she had another event before mine and she said she didn't. She is just HARD for no reason. She eventually compromised to allow 30 minutes earlier. The ONLY accommodations she provided me, was allowing me to pay the balance on the day of event. It is now Jan 28, my team is at event space ready to set up at 5:15pm (remember she said we can have the space at 5:30pm instead of 6pm). At 5:45pm I arrived and everyone is still outside. My cousin calls her and her response is "technically, y'all paid for 6pm so someone is on the way to open the venue" Can you believe that? Lol. Someone finally shows up to open the venue and we walk into an unclean venue. There was a bucket of dirty water and a mop that smells like death in the doorway. There was flowers that was probably from a repass service or something, amongst other things. So not only did she not stick to her word to get us in 30 minutes earlier which I needed to decorate for my OWN event, but she opens the venue at 6 and we have to clean up before we start decorating. We had to call to get help with turning on the air and to adjust the lighting. Like noone was present to help or instruct us on anything. Fast forward to after the event. I had the space until 2am. We started wrapping up around 12:30 because my dj was booked until 1am and he had another booking after my event. At around 1:15am, a random maid was walking around my party asking for "Lorraine". At this time I had 6 out of 8 tables, completely cleared with chairs up, the last 2 tables being worked on, lights are on, dj is 90% packed up, 85% of my guests are GONE. As I am speaking to a few guests this maid interrupts the conversation and says "I'm looking for Lorraine?" So I said "do you mean LORI-ANN? Because I'm her." And she's like "oh yea, I just wanted you to know that the owner is on the way and you guys can begin cleaning up" LOL. So I pointed to the event space and asked her, "what does it look like is happening here?" before turning my back to continue the conversation. This is my BIRTHDAY. I am sending my guests off and you interrupt me, call me the WRONG name and speaking to be in a condescending tone? Furthermore, I have the space until 2am! If I decide to start cleaning at 1:59am that's ON ME. She has my deposit (and thank GOD I only gave her $100 vs $300 on the deposit).

I've had different kinds of food here but the oxtail and Mac and cheese are my favorites. The oxtail is delicious. It's prepared Jamaican style and is tender and flavorful. The Mac and cheese is perfect. In all honesty all the food is pretty good. She was there with us every step of the way, guiding us to make all the best choices. On the day of the wedding, it is scary how she is able to get things done. It's clear she has done it a million times and knows exactly what to do to make sure everything goes smoothly. The food - guests still have not stopped raving about the entire cocktail hour, from the sushi station to the sliders. For dinner, the entrees are ACTUALLY delicious - not your typical wedding food at all. And the dessert parade (also super yummy) is such a fun surprise to end the night with. The service - there were so many staff everywhere to help answer questions and give directions, and every single one was patient, kind and helpful. During the dinner, guests said that their water cup was never empty and the server for each table was responsive and accommodating. We never felt like we were just one in a hundred weddings they've done that season. It made all the difference for it to feel like a high-class event. The venue - you won't get views like this anywhere else. The rooftop for a ceremony is so so unique and special. The foyer was the perfect place for cocktail hour, such great vibes. And the penthouse was jaw-dropping gorgeous. The candles and string lights against the nighttime skyline makes for the best backdrop. I must commend the Ravel team for being on top of their game, and for being candid while also trying to make our dreams come true.  As someone who has never planned a wedding before, the Ravel team were patient and helpful every step of the way. They were able to stay within budget, while also making recommendations on how to optimize within budget. (In full transparency, we got married during peak wedding season in terms of costs, but the Ravel team helped us stay within budget.) The end result was our truly magical East-meets-West wedding, one that earned top reviews from all my guests - many guests said it was the best wedding they have ever attended! The food also deserves endless praise - it is rare to find a venue that does truly delicious in-house catering. Guests also said it was the best wedding food, and I have to agree - especially the appetizer stations, including the sushi bar! Oh, and the after-dinner dessert parade? Bottle service with dessert?
