Good service and fast. Reliable hours, especially the one in Kona. Pretty easy to find.

    Waimea Recycling and Transfer Station

Every time I go there to shop or donate something, I always get the grumpy tutu (grandma)…read more Two days ago, I tried to donate a coffee table. My father had built it out of bamboo because he believed in sustainable building material. It had four legs, and it had been sanded down to a smooth finish. Unfortunately, my father was unable to install a glass inlay due to a terminal illness. The table had a frame, but no glass to finish it off. I inherited the table. Unfortunately, I don't know of anyone who works with glass. To make the table work for me, I put two planks of wood to cover the gaping hole. I used that table to put cooking appliances on it. Unfortunately, my landlord deemed it a fire hazard and wanted that table out on Tuesday. I thought I could take it to the Waimea Recycling and Transfer Station as is. Surely someone would see how beautiful and polished it looked. All it needed was someone in DIY projects who could install the glass. I took it to the Transfer Station thrift store. Unfortunately, I got the grumpy tutu. "Nope. No can take em. Gotta be complete." I had no idea that the thrift store had that policy. So now, I'm in a pinch. I can't take it back home and I don't know of anyone dealing in glass. My only option was to take this gorgeous but incomplete table to the trash chutes. I was in tears. To see my father's handiwork ending up in the dump broke my heart. There was a kind woman, a fellow shopper, who could see I was struggling to carry the table and the two wood planks to the chutes. I told this woman about my dad, the craftsman that built this table. I was struggling to hold back my tears as we took the table to the far side chute, where they were recycling refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, etc...I could NOT throw my dad's work down the chute. I was hoping that someone would see the fine craftsmanship my father put into this table, despite its flaws, and take it home. I was hoping it would find a good home. I got back to my car, which was parked in front of the thrift store, and cried my heart out. Loudly. After bawling my eyes out and screaming in my car, I drove my car to the appliance drop off to find that the table and the two wooden planks were gone. I dare not to look in the trash chute. I didn't want to. I prayed that my father's table found a good home. Moral of the story? Don't take incomplete projects, especially ones of sentimental value to the Waimea Transfer Station thrift shop. You're just going to get a grouchy grandma saying, "no. No can take em."

The guy working there helped unload our trunk which we apreciated-we always seem to have old unworking electronic stuff and this is the place to take it so doesn't end up in the trash.

I've been accumulating worn out computers, printers, stereo equipment and stuff for years. If the item was functional, I would list it on Craigslist for free, just to keep it out of the landfill and to give someone else the chance to get some use out of it. But, if it's a hunk of junk, there's no point in listing it and getting someone's hopes up for a nice freebie. This stuff was junk. We found this place with a quick Google search. Open Tuesday 1-5pm and Saturday 8am-1pm, I thought they would be less busy on a Tuesday afternoon. There were people dropping off when we arrived and more showing up as we left. I violated rule #1 right away. You're supposed to stay in your car. My pile of junk was in the trunk, so I got out to open the trunk since my car has a key lock for the trunk lid. Thankfully, the fellow who came out let this violation slide. He actually was very friendly and we got along well. But, there was another problem. Some of my electronics weren't acceptable. He told me that he couldn't take my old garage stereo, complete with an 8-track tape player. I asked him why and he just shrugged his shoulders. But, if I moved that receiver, he would take the junk that was under it. He also took my old printer, but left the broken CD changer. So, I guess I have a couple of hunk of junk headed for the landfill.
