Reviewing the tour of Mallows Bay, I would note that this is offered under the county government's website, that tours are in very finite numbers and tend to fill up well in advance. Obviously, if you have a boat and can get it to this remote location, you don't need the tour. But for me, I've had it on my to-do list for a long time, I traveled a long way to get to the tour, and it was worth it. There was a presentation before getting on the boats, which I thought was detailed and well-handled. The presence of a fleet of shipwrecks requires some explanation. Getting into the water didn't take all that long. The amount of time on the water was as long as or slightly longer than what we booked, and this gave enough time to pretty thoroughly round the bay. The tide was quite high when I visited so the wrecks were mostly underwater, but there were still plenty of sights to be seen. Having seen them from land and memorialized them in photographs, the experience from water is much better. And of course, the shipwrecks now are simply a place for wildlife to live, and the visit an excuse to get out on a part of the river where it turns estuarine. This trip is not a huge distance from DC, but it is a world away. read more

Four of us went out on the Mallows Bay Ghost Ships tour and had an amazing time! We lucked out with practically perfect weather and a beautiful sunset as we finished our paddle, which surely helped matters, but our guides were also well-prepared, knowledgeably, and had all the equipment we needed. The location is just so cool and can't be beat; it was an unforgettable experience to see the half-sunken ships. I had been hesitant, due to the high price tag, but I think we all thought it was worth it in the end. If I had any suggestions, it would be to more prominently display on the website that all kayaks are tandem kayaks. Thankfully, we came with an even number of people, but I would have hate to have been surprisingly paired up with a stranger. It also would have been great if one of the instructors could have given us more kayaking tips. We could not stop veering to the side no matter what we did, and they didn't seem to have any advice for us. read more

The mallow's bay ghost fleet tour is so much fun! The equipment (kayaks, vests) is great. The kayak launch made it easy to get in and out of the water. Our guides were so knowledgeable about the history of the area and we saw a lot of neat things! Aside from the ships we saw Eagles and Osprey. read more

Went with a group and had excellent 2.5 hour tour of this very interesting bay. We had two guides (the owners) plus two "safety boats" along for the whole trip. The tour included about 50/50 the natural environment and the history of the sunken boats. Kayaks pretty comfortable and we stayed mostly dry. Even saw a couple bald eagles. I found out about Atlantic Kayak Co through Thingstododc. I was looking for unique 4th of July activity events. Honestly, I am tired of going to crowded and unkempt places for the 4th of July. I found something more relaxing and special... a kayak lesson plan with fireworks around 9 PM. My fiance and I arrived at 7 PM. The place was easy to find, and there is a parking lot structure with restrooms. I am pretty sure this place is busy all the time because they were low on toilet paper, so I recommend bringing your own on water activity events . Down by the creek there are porta potties. The Mattawoman Creek is breathtaking! Such a pretty and relaxing view. It was everything I expected for a kayaking trip. The instructors are all very friendly and helpful. We got separated into groups, and they taught us how to kayak. Then our adventure began on the water. We saw egrets and heard croaking tree frogs. We saw the sunset. The sight and sound of nature made my 4th spectacular. I cant wait to visit Atlantic Kayak Co again this summer. If you want to do something naturey I total recommend this place! read more

We had a fantastic time kayaking here on Father's Day. Anna and Maddie were very helpful renting us two tandem kayaks. Went with my wife and two sons ages 9 and 12. It was a windy day but the creek is pretty sheltered although we did encounter some wind and chop as well as boat traffic. We saw a bald eagle and Herron to top off a gorgeous day. NOTE: This review is purely about service, not about their tours, because I never got to go kayaking with these people! Here's the thing. I bought a deal for a kayaking trip for 2 last summer. I scheduled my kayaking trip. It got rained out. We were promised new vouchers for a kayaking trip for 2, but they were never issued. We checked in regularly, asked about the vouchers, and never received them. So we figured, hey, we have an email saying they'd honor our vouchers, let's try to go kayaking now that the weather's good again. Finally, we get a response from the folks at Atlantic Kayak. Their response? They won't honor our vouchers. Or rather, they'll honor the price that we paid for the vouchers, which means they reneged on their word that they'd issue us new vouchers for a kayaking trip for 2. Their customer service was terrible, so we reported them to the company that sold us the deal, which issued us a credit for other deals on their site. We have no intention of ever working with Atlantic Kayak again, and I wouldn't recommend them to friends or family. read more

Had a very relaxing tour of the Mallows Bay Ghost Fleet with AKC, an hour or so South of DC. It's a beautiful location and a great story. The event was in association with DC's Atlas Obscura. Saw osprey, dragonfly, lots of fish, two eagles, one otter and a beaver's lodge among the ancient ships. The guides kept a comfortable pace, shared great information, had good equipment and a strong emphasis on safety. Highly enjoyable. 5 stars. Recommend. read more

I did the Mallows Bay Ship Graveyard tour last Saturday with a group of five. What a great experience! Judy was incredibly knowledgeable about the flora, fauna, and the history of the ships "buried" in Mallows Bay. She and Jeremy did a terrific job leading the tour and that each person got what they wanted out of the trip, even with a group of 14 with diverse interests. This is a hidden gem for kayaking in the DC area. The owner, Judy, is incredibly knowledgeable and accommodating. I reserved a trip for our team of environmental educators. We had a great time and learned a lot about the flora and fauna of the Piscataway. We went on the Marsh Loop Tour and were amazed by all of the wildlife (eagles, ospreys, spawning carp, etc.) You honestly felt like you were a world away while paddling through narrow passages in the marsh. I highly recommend this place for anyone- school groups, company team building, private groups and so on. read more

I went on the "Sunset on the Potomac" tour last summer. I had never been kayaking before, but this experience was so great I hope to do it again someday. I wish I could remember the tour guide's name, because she was amazing. So chill, knowledgeable, reassuring, and hilarious! With our small group (10, I think it was? and most of us were in 2 seaters) we went at a leisurely pace out to where the creek opens to the Potomac, sat a moment to watch the sunset, and then paddled back to have bargain wine out of paper cups on the pier. This is bucket list material, folks. I bought the tickets online through their website, so no complications there. The liability release forms freaked me out, but this is really not that dangerous. And I'm a nervous person, generally. The water was mostly quite shallow, and it was still water the whole way, and we were never so far from land I couldn't just walk back if I felt like freaking out (which, with that tour guide, never entered my mind) If you're considering it, you should definitely do it. Pro tips: --water tends to dribble down the paddle with each stroke, so the only part of me that got wet was my backside, strangely. Plan accordingly. bring a towel to sit on on the drive home. --other than that, you can dress like you would for playing outside, no need for any kind of complicated get ups --the website mentions snack and sunscreen, but if you do this tour, neither are really necessary. But do bring a water bottle. --put your phone in a ziplock bag, then it'll be dry and ready for the photo-op when you reach the potomac. read more
