I am not going to be able to attend the parade this year because of work so I am going to write a review to encourage everyone else to go to do my part :P.
The pride parade is something I look forward to every year! The energy is high. It is a celebration of being yourself and loving whoever you want no matter who you are. There is a breaking down of socially-created boxes of gender, sexuality, race, and age, and for at least a weekend we all are just people celebrating the opportunity to be out whether we're straight and supportive, gay and proud, gay and in the closet (but proud to be out for the weekend), transgender, pansexual, bisexual, whatever floats your boat!
During the parade, many big companies who show their support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender(LGBT) community will have floats with loud music and will give out stuff like pens, beads, candy, fans, coupons, condoms, frisbees, couzees, whatever they want! There are churches, bars, restaurants, prominent people, politicians, entertainment venues, financial groups, corporations, different professional organizations, nonprofits, even people if they want to who march and sometimes have a float that is in line with the theme of the year. It's so much fun! I have been going for the last 7 years since I was 17 years old. This year would have made 8. I have even marched one year with the Human Rights Campaign which I was part of the Atlanta Steering Committee at the time.
Some advice if you're thinking of going - Get there early... I would say 11:00 am and camp out if you want to have good vision of the parade. The parade usually kicks off around 1230pm-1pm. It starts at the civic center marta station and ends at the charles allen entrance of piedmont park. They close off parts of Peachtree street. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE TAKE MARTA! Parking is horrible ! If you're taking marta, you can get off at civic center, north avenue, or midtown station. Midtown station is where most of the people get off at. The biggest crowds of people will be along 10th street, especially near where 10th street crosses piedmont. That is considered by many "the gay corner" with it being the old location of Outwrite, a gay bookstore that closed many years ago and now has Ten (gay bar), Zocalos, 10th & piedmont, and flying biscuit as well as G's and Blake's (gay bar). It is usually very loud with a live DJ at this corner also, so if you're looking for peace and quiet, I would go somewhere along peachtree st maybe near the vortex, noodle, hudson grill, bulldogs (Gay bar), or Starbucks.
After the parade, if you have time I would check out Piedmont Park. There are many businesses and booths with cool things you would never be able to find other than the internet and a lot of the booths are giving out free stuff. Get an HIV test. Drink a sample of Barefoot wine. Go check out the couples getting commitment ceremonies. Listen to a concert. Play frisbee with people on the lawn near Park Tavern. Just have fun! Enjoy being able to be yourself no matter what you consider your gender and sexuality. read more
