I arrived on my first appointment with a prescription from my doctor for medicare-covered machine-therapy (iontophoresis and ultrasound) plus PT. After a 1-hour evaluation with a therapist, only THEN was I informed they do not offer the medicare-covered machine therapy prescribed by my doctor. Three different people eventually told me that my prescribed medicare-authorized treatment was not supported by medical research and they recommended laser therapy that was NOT covered by medicare and would cost me hundreds of dollars for a series of treatments. I was SHOCKED! I asked ... you mean a medicare-authorized treatment is NOT supported by medical research?! And you cannot provide me exactly what I came here to get?! And you waited until AFTER a 1-hour evaluation before you told me all that?! I was in total disbelief and felt terrible because of all the subtle but polite pressure that was put on me when all I wanted was what my doctor had ordered. Why did they need to make me feel so terrible? I just couldn't believe it. After I asked my questions, the "manager" was consulted several times and I was eventually informed that they COULD do most of what was prescribed by my doctor and it would all be covered by medicare. I felt trapped since I had already been there one hour so proceeded with the treatment. This is where the 5-star rating starts. All hands-on people were OUTSTANDING and the full course of PT fixed my issue 100%. My advice is to be very cautious if you are recommended treatments NOT ordered by your doctor. Otherwise, an excellent place.

The pain continued and after cortisone injections, physical therapy and dry needling sessions I'm still in pain. I sought a 2nd opinion and the Surgeon identified was the issue is. I'm scheduled for a follow up surgery to repair what should have been done initially. I was consistently made to feel that my pain was manufactured by the PA Alyssa (who needs to practice a little empathy) and Staff and come to find out there is a confirmed issue that needs surgery. I regret choosing this practice. On a positive note the front desk Staff was pleasant, and the Nurse Brenda who was the only one who showed compassion.

I was treated there in 2021-2022 for three different problems (neck pain, therapy after foot surgery, and a torn rotator cuff). They got rid of my pain and got me back to full range-of-motion for each of my three problems. In the past 4 years, I've been to 3 different physical therapy places in Chesterton, including ATI. I rate ATI a 10, whereas the other two places I'd give a 0 and a 5. The place I rated 0 actually injured me, so I then needed PT to fix the harm they'd caused. That was when I switched to ATI. Melanie was fantastic in getting me back on my feet. She was truly sympathetic and also put me through no small amount of necessary work, both during our sessions and with exercises recommended be completed at home. While there is still work - and time - needed for me to make a full recovery with issues outside of Melanie and Apex' bandwidth, I am walking again without any pain or even discomfort. You would be better served going to a genuine provider who puts more emphasis on patient care and less emphasis on profit. I have been going to Family Medicine of Merrillville for over a year. I was originally in "Dr. Luke's" care. He is an LPN who got a job elsewhere and I was subsequently assigned to LPN Weronika Lugo when he left. I had two visits with Weronika Lugo. The first was on March 12, 2026. The second was on May 21, 2026. During these visits the subject of additional medications came up that I needed. When I asked about those Weronika Lugo's response was to "Take charge of your healthcare and do it yourself." This is a curious answer for a caregiver to give to a patient. Over the course of two visits she gave me this exact response at least six times to various questions. A reasonable interpretation is that she doesn't want to deal with me. And I'm fine with that. I started looking for another doctor's office. I started having problems getting my prescription refilled. After several phone calls to the pharmacy and the insurance company my wife determined that the prescription had been approved on the wrong prescription insurance plan that was employer based. The insurance company insisted on dealing with the doctor's office and it was not something that I could get done myself. The office manager's response at Family Medicine of Merrillville was to acknowledge that it would take an employee a considerable amount of time on the phone with the insurance company to get this mistake corrected. Then she said this wasn't an expenditure she was willing to make and if I wanted my prescription I needed to pay $300 to their office to get it filled instead of just paying the $25 copay at the pharmacy. That is when I knew for certain they really don't want me as a patient. Their main concern isn't the welfare of their patients. It is selling drugs out of their refrigerator for maximum profitability. I was prepared for indifference. But what happened when I went to a legitimate healthcare provider and left Family Medicine of Merrillville was entirely unwarranted. They listed my prescription as "no longer medically necessary" in my records to prevent me from getting it under insurance coverage at a pharmacy since I opted not to buy it directly from them. They did this in July when I had not had a visit to their office since May. I had already gone to another LPN for a checkup and gotten a prescription elsewhere. Family Medicine of Merrillville intentionally kneecapped me on the way out the door. I don't know if this is illegal or unethical but I am reporting it to whatever regulatory authority I can find whose jurisdiction covers it. My recommendation is a hard pass on Family Medicine of Merrillville. There are some good people who work there but the people who direct and focus the work don't have your best interests in mind. They are the kind of people who would have been selling Fen-phen out of the trunk of a car in 1995.
