This is a review for the emergency room, I have no kind words for these people. Many years with…read morethis being the closest option for many of us. For years my family, friends and myself have dreaded having health emergencies and being brought to this nightmare of an E.R. You'll notice when you first arrive every other section is reused rooms or beds in open areas, the floors are covered in trash and used medical items. There is a large amount of filth stains that are on the walls. Staff constantly disregard you and seek to rush you out often without even seeing that you're treated, the entire staff have made it clear they are quiet quitting and to make sure that it's the patients that suffer and not management. What kind of behavior does this quiet quitting cause? it's what all the things we dread and panic over, from being left soaked in urine for hours, to watching people with mental health issues be tormented, mocked and publicly humiliated in front of other patients. To being rushed out of the building while still bleeding from an open wound where an I.V. was just taken out of. Having to return several times to the ER because they claim you're faking, I almost died of low potassium with severe chest pain myself. I had to return to the ER several times in a week until they finally did a blood test and not have me lay in a bed for 6-10 hours clenching my chest in pain. This place should be known for it's history of horror, for it's terrible management, for it's downright cruel and unprofessional behavior. For having an infamy with outside nurses and doctors calling it "a place they wouldn't send their dog to." This place will be in a documentary someday for how it's run. P.S. Heywood was on the news for allowing a patient struggling with mental health issues to wander away with hospital garb and no shoes and police are looking for him worried about his health and safety.

I started feeling like it's going a little to fast again. So I called to make an appointment with anteconology, I talked to a woman on the phone, she came across snotty and it seem like I had wasted her time. In a snotty way she say you're not a patient of ours. The doctor I had moved to Nashua New Hampshire, you'll have to call there. I said Really! You do realize that you work at a hospital right, not a clinic. And once upon a time, nobody were your patients. So reject someone who's heart's racing to fast. It's been over a year now and I'm still living with it. Back in July in my work parking lot my heart was racing pretty good, I don't know if it had anything to do with it, but passed out Someone found me on the ground I broke 3 ribs my left eye was closed shut my head was laying in a pool of blood. This comment is only meant to anteconology department.

She is amazing…read more I came in feeling super uncomfortable (TMI, but I was extremely constipated), and Maria immediately made me feel completely at ease. Not once did she make me feel embarrassed. Instead, she laughed and said, "Girl, it's okay, we all get backed up sometimes." That honestly made my whole day. Healthcare workers like her make such a difference. She treated me with kindness, humor, and genuine care when I was feeling pretty miserable. Give that woman an award! Seriously, Maria deserves recognition for the way she takes care of people. Thank you for making a not-so-fun ER visit way more comfortable than I ever expected.

The tech spent maybe 45 seconds during the ultrasound and defintiely did not look in the right area to find what I was going there for but didn't communicate to me in time to let me know she didn't find anything. I don't understand why she couldn't ask me any questions or spend any more time trying to figure out why I was there. For my first MRI I was not given a pillow and my head hurt so much in the machine. They also seemed angry at me for not telling them I didn't have a pillow, how was I supposed to know? also nobody showed me the way out, they just sort of walked away after the MRI and I got lost. for my second MRI I was told I could leave my rings on but they sort of vibrated and burned in the scanner so I really don't think that was a good idea. the scan was very late at night and nobody was at check in when I arrived so I really struggled to get checked in. I will have to try to work with my insurance to figure out where else I can go for imaging in the future, I really don't want to get stuck here again.

I have so many great things to say about Heywood Rehab. Center! It is such a pleasant, professional…read moreand warm environment but, the real reason I wanted to write here is because of one physical therapist in particular. Bill Chapman is the most compassionate, intelligent hard working professional I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He took amazing care of my son when he was recovering from brain surgery because of a cancerous tumor. He also took care of my husband when he ruptured his Achilles. Now, it was my turn with an arthritic knee. I have learned more about my body and what it is capable of from Bills educational physical therapy sessions. He doesn't just pop you on a machine and watch from afar or give you a quick routine that you could whip through on your own. The exercises, stretches, massages and progressive strengthening doesn't ever go without explanation, education and encouragement. He works tirelessly on your mind, body and spirit! It goes above and beyond what is probably expected and required of him. You always feel like the most important person in the room. I know I am getting much more than the BEST possible therapy. I tell everyone I know to go there and request Bill and no one is ever disappointed. I look forward to my visits and make sure I keep my end up at home with his plan for me. I don't want to do anything to jeopardize my progress that we have BOTH worked so diligently on. I am just as committed as Bill is to my recovery. Thank you Heywood Rehab for knowing a gem when you find it!

The last time I was there about 5 months ago, a nurse, PA that I have never seen before told the ER Dr. Spangler that sometime in the last 8 years I've been going there that I threaten to sue her if she didn't give me drugs. That Dr. ALWAYS treated me well as he know my med situation better then me. He would give me several injection of 2mg of Dilauted and, write scripts for me for narcotic pain meds like dilated scripts. The last time, he came into my room at the ER mad as hell! He kicked me out without treating me, breaking a federal concerning stabilize and treating patients in a ER. He told me to never come back to the ER. Breaking another law. So I'm screwed the next time I need an ER. The Athol Ambulance can ONLY take a patients to the Athol ER. The other hospital ER is about 45 minutes to close to an hour away. And, there is a coverup going on. I had some PR lady messaged me calling me a liar and stating that the ER NEVER turns a patient away. Oh yeah?

Visiting Athol hospital and the way I was treated was far worse than my illness which they misdiagnosed. I have found a lawyer that is very interested in the details of my horrible experience, perhaps I can do something to at least prevent another from the chances of being mistreated abused misdiagnosed left in pain and humiliated. This place inhabits the worst of the worst in the medical profession.

We live in town and I've had to visit multiple departments, including the ER for both myself and taking my parents. In the 10 years or so since I first left the review, I can honestly stay I stand by my original assessment. If you, literally, don't think you'll survive the drive to Lahey or Mass General then certainly go here. Otherwise, do whatever you can to get to a better hospital. Aside from my own 1-star experiences, I've heard multiple stories of similar experiences of close friends and immediate family getting grossly misdiagnosed by Emerson. Most recently they sent a friend home after a CAT scan with a "concussion" which, fortunately, the Lahey Clinic almost immediately discovered were severe brain lesions. My father was in a car accident where Emerson missed a broken back and concussion - again, fortunately, caught days later by another hospital. It's unfortunate as we live about 2.3 miles away but between our experiences and local paramedics recommending other hospitals, it's simply not worth stopping unless absolutely critical. (Side note: Yelp's, "Not Recommended" reviews for Emerson are worth a read.)
