Passing through the area and spotted the historical marker sign so detoured to check it out. This…read moreair field is not far from US-80 just west of Mineola. The marker is in good condition and reads, "Wisener Field. The age of aviation came to Mineola on July 4, 1917, when a Curtis JN-4D "Jenny" biplane, piloted by a member of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, landed at this field. Called Massengale Meadow at the time, the site's flat terrain proved conductive to the establishment of one of the first airports in Texas. It was used by military aircraft during World War I and was the home of the Royal Flying Circus and other barnstormers in the 1920s. Expanded and improved over the years, it remains a privately-maintained public use airport. (1988)." The wikipedia article says that a number of well-known aviators have flown into Wisener Field. These have included Wiley Post, "Slats" Rogers, Tommy Grace and Fay Lucille Cox. United States Senators Lyndon B. Johnson (later U.S. President), Phil Graham, and Kay Bailey Hutchison have flown into the airport. As it happened, there was a man here who seemed to be thinking about a takeoff and I I watched him go down the runway only to cancel and taxi back to the top. Nice airport, it's not too big. Much easier to go in and out of than DFW (especially with the…read morecurrent construction in terminal c, March 2026). I've flown Southwest flights from DAL and never had issues. Nice airport with several good food and shopping options and getting thru security takes 10-20 mins, depending on how busy it is. Parking garage is right outside of the main terminal, and if you're picking someone up, they have wait lots where you can sit until they say they're at the curb.

In this case, it was pretty easy getting off the plane and to my car rental booth. However, it is really annoying to have someone at the Rental Car Information Booth who lets everyone pass her just to find "Go to the Shuttle" signs at the counter. Spend the money on a sign that doesn't roll its eyes. Of course, this was the last airport JFK flew into. In fact, LBJ was sworn in as president while on the tarmac here. For being one of the oldest continually operating airports in the US (founded in 1917 as a WW1 training base), it doesn't look like it. By the way, if you're on a layover, they have a Smithsonian-affiliated museum ($12) that houses over 30 aircraft and extensive space flight exhibits on airport grounds a 5 minute taxi ride away. As for being the site of movies: their modern (for its time) moving sidewalks were used in Logan's Run (1976). Oliver Stone recreated the president's arrival here for JFK (1991), as did the Stephen King based 11.22.63 (2016); Wes Anderson used it for the backdrop of Bottle Rocket (1996), and the airport was a plot point in Michelle Pfeiffer's Love Field (1992).
