The first was a 50 year old screenprint that suffered from considerable foxing which she removed flawlessly from within the ink. The second was a vintage screenprint that was totally destroyed in shipping. The box was crushed leaving severe creases in multiple places and she magically flattened it and drastically reduced the creases so that they are not visible without close examination. I think we've all grown accustomed to shoddy service in so many realms. Not here. The bench was purchased by my mother, probably around 40 years ago, and was in her huge backyard and garden. She had 5 benches, and 5 kids, and this one was mine after she passed in 2011. Over the years I have had it refinished, but time took a toll on the structure of it. Replacing it with a new bench did not seem satisfying- how could I discard this precious (to me) piece of history that contained so many memories of my mother and her beautiful yard? Giorgio came out and took a look, (remember he is a fine antique restorer) and he said he would like to take on the project. The price was more than I thought it would be, (way more than a new bench), but he explained that he would have to replace all of the wood, all of the hardware and restabilize the bench. It would take approximately 1 month, taking it to his studio. I agreed. He took the bench away in pieces. The old bench was oak, and he we went over options for replacement and settled on heat treated ash, an enduring high-quality choice that would have a similar look to the original oak. Giorgio delivered the bench back to my San Francisco yard. I was so happy! The quality craftsmanship of Giorgio Di Costanzo filled that bench with the magic of my mother's memory to be enjoyed for years to come.
