Atelier Marega is one of the few shops that continue to handcraft the traditional carnivals that give Venezia her famous identiy. Like typical artisan shops, the masks are relatively pricey with the cheapest ones being more than €20, and that stopped me from purchasing the first time I was in. However, after comparing to few including the most famous Ca' Macana, this shop definitely has the most beautiful masks around, and I actually went back to buy one! I like Marega's masks the best because they continued to preserve the traditional look but also add a little pazazz such as the music sheets to give a Phantom of Opera vibe. I think this shop's creativity of stepping a little in the modernity while maintaining the tradition allows their masks to stand out from both fellow artisan masks and cheap plastic masks. Also, at the same price level, Atelier Marega's masks are actually much more ornate than their competitors! Anyway, support the Venetian artisans! Venezia is not only a sinking city but also a dying one as locals are getting pushed out by cheap imports killing local business and high housing cost making living expensive. Some are little more than a painted mask with some painted designs to them. And some as intricate as a work of art. Such is this shop. Joie de Vivre is not a souvenir shop, this is a specialty store that carries only masks and some puppets. We were talking to the son of the owner who told us his father makes every single mask, he has been doing it for 30 years and learned the craft from his grandfather. We couldn't really take pictures but trust me when I tell you these masks are amazing. They are so intricate I only bought a small one because of lack of space in my luggage, but even so I would've been remiss to buy one and not being able to bring it back to the US intact. They are too pretty to just throw in a suitcase.

I've breathed all of this since i was a child, among the "calli" and the Venetian Palaces, and it has been the most natural thing to transform it into my work. The mesmerizing charm of Venetian Masks and Historical Costumes is the same in times. The pleasure of disguising game attracts every year countless people and hide oneself behind a mask is an irresistible attraction. A Masked Ball can be the dream of an entire life. But what's the work behind all of this? Finished my languages studies i began as employee by whom thaught me a lot, leaving me free to experiment with my first masks and costumes.. Over the years i developed my techniques and my own style. Masks have to be worn like sparkling jewels to enhance the glamourous spirit of Carnival, and the costumes, even if following the original style of their centuries, have to shine on their own light with gold, silver, cristals to make the game even more magical. I have named my Atelier "Sogno Veneziano" because to come to our city is everyone's dream, and live the misterious atmosphere of Venice is a unique experience. It was pouring rain and Sergio let me watch him paint a wall mask and was kind enough to let me hang out. I purchased a set of card masks and he shipped them to me just as he said he would. We are very pleased with the masks. Sergio signed and dated the cards. I would hope to return again another time in the future.

Saved quite the penny and didn't have to try and fit my schedule around their impossible delivery time frames ("we'll come between 9:30 and 16:30"). Like any other Unieuro branch, this location honors sale coupons advertised both online and through flyers. However, due to limited floor capabilites, back orders may need to be implemented (causing further delays). Prices on items vary from competitive to outrageous (specially with AC units starting mid spring). This store shares a parking lot with both a furniture store and a shoe outlet, therefore it might get pretty busy during the weekend.

The artist or the craft lady not sure what to call her is super friendly and she doesn't mind trying every thing and taking pictures. She sits their and makes masks in front of you. The place is amazing i wanted to cry not to afford anything there, but still a pleasure to be there and to look at her amazing work. The prices are expensive but absolutely worth every euro. She uses real crystals and the pieces are exotic not like any other shop.
