This review is for the mask-paining class that we took part in during out trip to Venice last month. One of the things I knew I wanted to do in Venice was mask-making. CA' Macana offers a mask making class where you do the paper mâché and then come back another day to paint it, but we didn't know how much time we would have, so we opted for the mask painting only class. I booked the class several weeks in advance.
They have a few storefronts, that the mask-making workshop is about a block down from one of the storefronts. I was a bit disappointed about that, as I had really hoped to do a bit of shopping around the store at the same time, and learn about some of the masks while taking the workshop.
When we arrived, we were able to pick out our masks. My husband chose a plague doctor mask. I chose a tragedy mask. We then chose between a few different paint techniques and several paint colors. The woman teaching was very knowledgable about the techniques, and spoke several languages.
I was a bit surprised, as other than myself and my husband, the other students were all children or teenagers. I had thought there would be lots of tourists, adults, taking this class while sipping wine and Aperol spritz. However, this was not a paint and sip class.
The classes were really not at a specific hour as I had thought, and the teacher was spread quite thin when other students kept trickling in. I also wish there had been more to decorate the mask with once the painting was done.
I will say, the teacher was very nice and we did not feel rushed at all. I really like how our masks came out and it is nice to have a hand-painted souvenir from our trip! read more
