We had previously tried out Jiu Jitsu two years ago at a different St. A dojo and did not have a good experience. At first, I was a little apprehensive to give it another try and the prices at Arashi-Do are higher than the other dojos I had looked at but decided to give it a go because my son's best friend wanted to sign up at the same place together. I initially sent in an email with questions about the program and received a telephone call in return from co-owner, Monitor Stephenie, and I was put at ease. Monitor Stephenie and Professor Tyson (married couple) co-own this franchise location and run the dojo together. They are fabulous - I cannot say enough great things about them. I've got one kiddo in Mini Monkeys (30 minutes 2 x a week) and one kiddo in Junior Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (45 minutes 2x a week). You pay the same for your membership whether you are in the 30 minute, 45 minute, or 60 minute classes - that I don't like but that's more to do with the franchise and the way Arashi-Do is set up than this particular location set up. The gym itself is bright, clean, spacious, and well-ventilated (I have not overheated as a parent sitting on the sidelines once). There are change rooms with a curtain as well as a washroom. What I'm really liking about Arashi-Do 1) that it's got a well-defined children's program and there is a difference between the mini monkeys and JBJJ. 2) Professor Tyson is phenomenal. My 9 year old daughter is completely comfortable with him and my 6 year old son thinks he is the bee's knees. Monitor Stephenie is fabulous, super kid friendly, approachable and easy to talk to. They really have a great balance as Professor and Monitor. Another neat thing is that they take their belts, stripes, and grading SERIOUSLY. The Master flies in from Brazil once (maybe twice) a year for all graded exams. Professor Tyson does regular stripe and colored bar tests but I believe the belt colour exams only occur when Mestre Sylvio da Matta Behring, 8th degree coral belt, visits. Things such as stretching and and following directions are a bit too advanced for a age 24 month old. At the end of class when they play with balloons etc she does enjoy it but I wish I would've waited another six months or year. They also change the class from 915 to 9 and we did not get the message so we miss part of the first class. But those two things aren't a big deal and so far we are having a fun time. The staff seem friendly enough and the class is pretty well structured. I like how they let both parents come in or there is a waiting room with a window where grandparents or the other parent can just sit and relax and watch your children. ( this class there must always be one parent present in the class) We are halfway done our eight week class and I would say so far so good. It's a nice way to get your children active.

Having been involved with this tae kwon-do school for over half my life, I can say that it's one of the best out there. Unfortunately, I've had to use what I've learned in real life, and I can tell you that it works. Things have changed a great deal since I started when I was... 12? But that's what happens when businesses expand. The instruction I received personally has always been the best. In my opinion, you get what you pay for. The best teachers, the best facilities, and the best programs. I've met people here that I'm going to know for the rest of my life. The people who have been unhappy obviously don't understand the word "contract", or are the type prone to signing things without reading them, and I find that really unfortunate.

Most of the gyms I called were very stand-offish and told me I should do some googling and then call them back if I had any questions. When I called Elite Taekwondo I ended up getting the Master on the phone. He was so patient and kind. Even though I asked a million "stupid" questions he answered every one of them. At the end of the call he invited us to come try out a class. My son was extremely awkward and shy. I had no idea what to expect. When we got to the gym we climbed the stairs with a lot of trepidation. What we encountered was a family. There were children and teens, moms and dads, young single adults and even grandparents. My son went into the class scared and came out so excited! The teacher was funny and made the warmups challenging but also doable for every level. When it came to learning taekwondo they gave the information in bite sized pieces that made my son beg to go back! My daughter who was very into sports and in really good shape had no intention of trying any martial art. But, after my son wouldn't stop talking about it, she decided to give it a try too. She could not believe how hard she was able to push herself. Next, some of the moms begged me to try it out with them. As someone who has been out of shape my whole adult life I did NOT want to even step foot on the mat. But when I did, I couldn't get enough. Before every class I would dread the hard work ahead, and by the end of class I couldn't believe how far I had come. Our entire family eventually ended up joining and we have never had as much fun, nor have we ever been as close as we were while training together. I never worry about my children out on their own now. I have seen my little girl throw a big burly man to the mats. I see the confidence they have and I know they can take care of themselves if they need to. If you ever wonder, the answer is yes, you should join a martial art. And yes, Elite Taekwondo is the best one to join.

They seem to have a good balance of supporting the kids but also having strict expectations of their behavior and skills. I wish they had a bigger studio with some type of glass between the students and the spectators so we could watch without being a distraction. I do also think that the quality of the class depends on which combination of instructors are there that day. That being said, the entire staff are so invested and excited for your development. The owner is always so cute and taking pictures of the kids with the instructors when they achieve a new belt. You can tell they take pride in their work and the success of their students.

So my kid took ninja classes here for about 3 years. And the first two or so years were lovely. But…read morein the past 6 months the quality of the classes has decreased for my kid. Not only that but the staff communication has become contradictory and frustrating. Some of the coaches are better than others, sure, but my kid did get at least one bleeding nose that wasn't spotted by the coaches that day. Repeated nagging on billing issues that were already resolved, email advertising for a PD Day camp on a day that wasn't a PD day but rather the national day of Truth and Reconciliation, disorganized classes, and the no longer availability of lockable lockers for belongings all contributed to a worsening experience. There is now a lot of competition in the kids ninja gym space so we will go elsewhere. Sadly this was one of the only facilities that catered toward the really young kids when we started here, and it really was excellent at first with good transit accessibility, awesome coaching staff, and more. Now, the formerly 1 hour classes are only 50 minutes, some days there isn't even an obstacle course, and the seating in the viewing area is less comfortable. Following this business's NIMBY anti-safe consumption space advocacy, I find it hard to encourage anyone to go here. I definitely find that a lot more parents are unsatisfied with the kids classes. Plus it is quite cold in here.

I didn't realize they split…read morethe gym in two parts though - one side for regular gym/fitness class stuff, and the other side (aka the fun side!) was for obstacle course practice/technique/training!! ** I am so going back for round 2 to experience the obstacle stuff!** The shop is quite spacious for the size it is, and easily hosts workout groups for 10 :) This place is kept pretty tidy, with everything back in its place for easy access for the next group, and the group members voluntarily also help put it back They have lots of free weights and treadmills, couple of different sizes boxes, balance balls, and some other fun stuff not shown in the pictures (like the heavy tires outside!). The trainer I had for the class, Stacey, kicked our sorry butts to the corner of the street and back! Her great energy and enthusiasm spurred us on, considering she was carrying a little human in her belly! I tip my hat off to you Stacey! After working my way through 2 years of nasty grief and health problems and other assorted issues (thanks, pandemic), I was determined to turn over a new leaf and begin really taking care of myself. Over the summer, I began walking around my neighbourhood, but I knew I wouldn't be able to keep it up over the winter. This place is so incredibly close that it fit the bill for contintuing my commitment to fitness. The indoor track is now my second home. I do at least a kilometer each time, and I like that they reverse the direction each day so you get a different view. It also overlooks the activity in the gym below, so you can chuckle at the kids doing karate or playing indoor soccer in the wintertime. There's plenty of exercise equipment. The Lifecycles are great because you can watch TV or internet, and power your usage with your movement. There's the studio where they have all the classes (Zumba, cycle, etc), the gym for basketball, volleyball, etc, and the workout room. Last weekend I got brave enough to try the pool. A little chilly when I got in, but the water was actually pretty warm once I was in a while. The day locker rooms are nearly immaculate. I like that there's a wet and dry locker area, with the handy cords for your locker key that you can put around your wrist while you work out. For an additional price, there are enhanced locker rooms with overnight lockers, towel service, etc. Everyone I've met here, staffwise, has been friendly and approachable. Make sure to wipe down the equipment after you use it. One of these days, I'm going to try out the smoothie bar in the lobby. Can't speak to the daycare or children's programs since I don't have kids, but I've seen all kinds of activities for them in the gym since I've been coming. If I was a parent, I'd definitely consider enrolling my kid in some classes or daycare here.
