Here is a review I left for At Home customer service. Do not sponsor this company's poor shopping environment.
Today I visited your store with my fiancé to find some items for decorating our home. On our way to checkout, a glass sugar holder that I was carrying to the register had fell to the floor and shattered. I could hear some laughing in the distance when it happened, when I looked up I saw it was a group of employees. I did not think anything of it and began to clean up my mess. While picking up the shattered pieces, my fiancé said that the employee approaching us looked very displeased. As the employee approached me, she firmly asked me to stop picking up the pieces and was not happy. It was a mistake and I'm not sure what was wrong, but I asked if I needed to pay for it. The employee, without a change in tone firmness and attitude had told me that I was not required to pay but I can if I want. I kindly informed her that if I do not have to pay for it, I won't - a very simple exchange. It is about 9PM so maybe they just finished cleaning and she was just upset that she had to clean up the mess? At this point, I do not hold any ill will, my fiancé and I go back to the aisle and found another sugar glass. As we are approaching the check out walk through, we can hear the clean up employee and checkout employee talk about how they are going to make me pay for it. Now at this point, I am getting the feeling that this is personal - I do not know this person and I am a customer. As I am at the checkout counter, the employees are now looking for a price tag that they can charge me for the accidently breaking the sugar glass. I am starting to wonder if I am a special exception or if everyone is treated like this? A lady who has a different uniform on comes around the area and I ask her if there is a manager I can speak with, she informs me she is one of the managers. I ask her what is the company policy if a customer accidently breaks an item, do you make them pay for it? She quite nicely responds that it is typically let go. That is how it's been anywhere that I have shopped, and I found it exceptionally weird that even after the employee told me that I did not have to, she was going out of her way to look through trash to 'make' me pay for it. After she overheard her manager's answer, she did not move forward with charging me. Because of this unusual encounter and the complaint that I am writing I asked the employee for her name. She first said "why?" and then told me Brady. Her cashier at the register did not make the experience any better because she was with Brady during the entire cleanup and then at checkout. I felt as if they had something against my fiancé and I which I can't understand. The level of discomfort for my fiancé was too much and she excused herself from checkout and let me finish the process. If I were a third party observing, I would say that I was racially profiled because nothing explains the mistreatment of my fiancé and I besides the color of our skin. read more
