My dad thinks I'm Wonder Woman. No, really. I'm not joking...here's the request I got from him a few weeks ago: "We'd like a hotel room in Chicago, over the weekend, with a nice view for about $125 a night. I am sure you can figure it out since you are so resourceful." Riiiiight. Ok then. I almost spat back "well, you can stay at the Red Roof Inn O'Hare with a lovely view of the Cumberland el stop for about $150." But no. I am a dutiful daughter. So, I went to work. I scoured the internet...as I often do when I don't know what I am doing. I stumbled upon At Home Inn Chicago, a service that rents out private residences in a variety of neighborhoods in Chicago. We booked him a room in an Edgewater high-rise, he compromised with me and we got it for $185. FAR CHEAPER than anything downtown, IF we could even find anything... This option requires a bit more legwork than a hotel booking. First of all, DON'T plan on canceling. I mean really, this isn't for the faint at heart or those with a propensity to bail last minute. If you cancel within 10 days you pay TWICE the nightly rate...be forewarned! Ok, besides that. You make the reservation after selecting the property and then within a day or so they let you know that it's A-OK and booked for you. (pay with credit card, it's charged 2 days before arrival). They email you a guest lease and you must sign and fax/email back to them within 24 hours (i told ya, legwork...but worth it, trust me). Then you contact the private owner to make check in/out arrangements... The owner I had the pleasure of working with was lovely, friendly and hospitable. It could not have been any smoother...I'm sure this varies by owner, but they are pre-screened... Ok, so moment of judgment: is this place going to be a hellhole? No. It was actually on a very high floor in the Park Tower on Sheridan Road with a 360 degree view of downtown and the lake. Beautiful one bedroom condo with full kitchen, dining area, LCD plasma TV, AC ...my GOD, the view. I almost made them stay at my house and took the thing for myself for the weekend! A steal for $185 on a summer weekend. I will be using them again and again as I have people coming through. I highly recommend. I only docked one star for the strict cancellation policy, though I understand the need for it... I cannot say enough good things about At Home Inn Chicago. They saved our vacation! Thursday night of Memorial Day weekend our previous rental fell through and I suddenly needed to find a space to accommodate seven adults (five beds) for five nights. We started looking at 6pm, and needed to be in an apartment that night. When we called At Home Inn Chicago their offices were closed, but I took a chance and called their emergency number. The woman couldn't have been more helpful. She found us two apartments in the same building, in our desired location (Lincoln Park), with two parking spaces for our vehicles. We were able to book and get the access information for the building immediately. When we had questions, she was incredibly responsive. The apartments were wonderful - newly renovated, we were the first people to stay in them post renovation. There were plenty of towels, blankets, and pillows for our large group and the kitchen was well appointed. The neighborhood was fabulous, we were within walking distance of a number of great restaurants, bars, and shops, and public transportation to downtown was easy. I would definitely use them again. read more

Writing an updated review. While I stand by my opinion that my interactions with At Home Inn during the time between reservation booking and the actual start of the rental was not an ideal experience (2 stars), I did enjoy the onsite experience during the dates of my stay (3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up). This review is specifically for "Clark Street Quarters". After check-in, everything else went smoothly: Positives: -Excellent location of their Clark Street Quarters property (heart of Lincoln Park), convenient to #22, #36, #151 buses, and there is a parking garage across the street for $27 per day. Lots of quality restaurants and bars within walking distance, of all different price points. Convenient to Walmart, Trader Joe's, 24 hour Walgreens. -Clean and spacious 2 bedroom units.While I found the air in the apartment a bit dry, the beds were comfortable and all the fixtures were modern and updated. Borderline: -Note that there is no elevator in this building, and so be cognizant of which floor you are on so that you set your expectations regarding the walk-up required to get to/from your unit. Also consider whether you're moving a ton of luggage, bulky items, or have any health issues walking up and down steep stairs. -Bedrooms facing the street do get a bit of street noise, even at night, which should be expected given the neighborhood.There is a Landmark independent movie theater across the street. -The air conditioning in the building cannot handle a lower thermostat than 68 degrees, which may not be obvious to residents at first glance. If thermostat gets set lower (by panicky residents I presume who can't get the unit to cool down fast enough) the pipes freeze and the cooling stops working. While there were some mentions of this in email communications, I would recommend that those instructions be highlighted inside the unit (even a sign or a flyer) to prevent both resident and management headaches. I understand that the management company had to deal with all the annoying air conditioning problems in multiple properties during a very hot summer weekend, and this frustration was definitely apparent from the disgruntled manner of a handyman who talked to us. Negatives: -No room darkening shades or curtains, and so light enters the room quite early in the morning (we used a blanket to help block out the light for sleeping children). -Difficult to "reach a live human" for any questions. * ------ *In my experience, At Home Inn relies very heavily on email communication (due to limited staff?), and it was very rare to reach a live human when you call their main office or call either of the two numbers (for presumably immediate assistance) that they state on their recorded answering message. On the day of arrival, I got an email from Elizabeth about 20 minutes before check-in time that she would like to move me into a different unit within the same building due to an air conditioning problem. I actually didn't look at my smartphone to retrieve my email until about 10 minutes after I checked in to the unit (by entering the provided unit code), which is when I happened to sit down and look at my phone for emails. I wonder what would have happened if I had hadn't checked my phone at that moment. For that kind of late stage change, I would have expected a phone call or a text message. Still I appreciated the intention to rectify the situation. I tried to phone the office with the thought it would be easier to get a real-time response to questions, but when I didn't get through to anyone I just returned Elizabeth's email and waited a few more minutes to receive the return email with instructions on how to enter the new unit. It was a little inefficient. ------- In the end, At Home Inn did come through and I enjoyed the overall stay. I would consider using them again and recommending them with proper expectations and mental preparations. read more

Do Not Rent the 'Dearborn Dustbin'! This rating is based on a 3 month stay (May 4 - Aug 2 2015) at the Gold Coast One Bedroom Walk Up (GC11.) We are a couple in our 40s and 50s who lived in Chicago for more than 16 years in the Lakeview neighborhood. We recently sold our condo and have adopted a work/travel lifestyle where we live in Air BnB and VRBO homes on a full time basis across the country. After traveling to Charleston and Napa Valley we decided to spend a few months in our 'home city' and took a chance with this Gold Coast apartment with At Home Inn Chicago - it was our first 'flop'! The Bad: - Massive construction in the adjoined building - loud, lots of dust that was everywhere!, we had to keep the windows closed and AC unit off on hot summer days, project has been going on for years - a fact that should have been disclosed prior to renting! At Home did offer to let us get out of our lease and to refund us for any unused nights, but we were unable to secure another rental. I think they contacted the owner next door because the situation did improve - the crew added extra tarps to trap the dust and they started their work at 8am (Chicago city ordinance) instead of 6:45am! - Nighttime noise - the bedroom windows face Dearborn and the new double-paned windows couldn't drown out the sound of motorcycles, delivery trucks, and the 4:45 am drunks in the street. I wore ear plugs and it helped. The bedroom blinds let the light in very early in the morning - sleep was a real challenge! - "Low rent" building - in desperate need of care, awful-looking exterior with some patchwork structural repair, 'murdery' interior, dog-friendly (another fact not disclosed), lobby and hallways were pretty filthy early on but then was cleaned up regularly after we complained, hallways often smelled of skunkweed The Good: The unit is exactly as pictured (except the listing smartly had no exterior or common area pics), clean, very small, well-appointed with unexpected extras like bathroom toiletries, good amount of storage, had a pretty view out of the living room window, nice TV with free HBO, very comfortable bed, good selection of kitchen supplies, and is in an excellent location - close to restaurants, shops, the Lake, and the CTA red line. John, the contact for the building, was helpful and regularly checked in to see if we needed assistance. No brooms or vacuums were provided - we grabbed ours (and our wine glasses) out of storage. At Home Inn Chicago appears to be a reputable company (our rental process was smooth, and they were very responsive to our complaints), but it needs to get rid of this disreputable unit! read more

My friend owned a property that he rented through At Home Inn for about a year. They worked with him to coordinate short-term rentals with third parties. Most often it was for people in Chicago for a few weeks on business. Renters were able to get a beautiful furnished apartment in Greektown with THE MOST incredible view of downtown. All for a far more reasonable price than an extended-stay hotel, within walking distance of the Loop! Since then, I have gotten to know a lot more about the business and the couple who run it (the Biddles) who totally rock. They are extremely conscientious and truly love what they do. I have recommended their service to a lot of friends, family, and even coworkers in town from other offices. They have condos and apartments all over the city, that can pretty much satisfy anyone's needs. I have a really bad experience with At Home Inn Chicago. This is not a review about the cleanness, location, or any unit-related issues. This is about their customer services. So, I've partially paid for a 3 BD/2 BA for the period from 7/20 to 7/27 on 6/2. I got an email on Friday 6/27 saying that the unit will not be available due to some limitation in accessing the unit. They offered another 2 BD/ BA unit with the same price or an "upgraded" 4 BD/ BA unit (1.5 miles away), with a 50$/night rate increase. On the same day, I contacted one of their members and gave her my verbal agreement that I take the second option (4 BD/ 2 BA) and just right before she hangs up the phone she told me she will send me the new contract on Monday. On Tuesday 7/1, I got an email from another member saying that because I didn't respond to the email, the unit has been already booked! They offered me an even further unit with the same price. While in arguing that it's not my mistake that they guaranteed the unit to someone's else, they refused to accept that they has a mistake not booking that unit for me. I felt that I was being accused that I was lying about the call I made on Friday by stating that they also work on Saturdays and it doesn't make sense to wait till Monday!! I've got my full refund back. But I am so frustrated because it seems that they were not willing to rent the unit I paid for. read more

Beware At Home Inn Chicago - Bait and Switch I dealt with a guy name Carson - seemed like a nice guy at first. He told me the place I found on VRBO was unavailable for the times I wanted (even though the system said it was), but then he told me about a different option they had available. I asked him to send me info. He said I'd have it in 5 minutes. An hour later I still didn't have it. So I called back - he said oops that the email was ready to go and said I would receive it in 5 minutes. Half an hour later I still didn't have it, so I called back a third time. No answer, but then I got an email a few minutes later with the info. I wrote him back quickly and said we wanted the new place and wanted to finalize the deal. I got no response until the next morning when I got an email saying the new place was no longer available but they had a different much more expensive property available. I called to ask what happened and asked whether he would honor a deal closer to the original terms for this new-new place. He said that someone had reserved the old-new place online overnight and that no they wouldn't go any lower on the new-new place. While not a direct quote, he basically said "you snooze - you lose". I reminded him that the only person snoozing was him, and that I would have agreed to the deal the day before if he had just sent the information when he said he would - either time. Even with his failures, I had almost undoubtedly sent my email saying I wanted the place before anyone reserved the place. They should have honored this agreement. But none of this mattered to them, and I was out of luck. I tried to talk to the manager, but he would only email me and he didn't bother to respond when I explained to him what happened. Looking at the availability of the original place on VRBO it shows that the only time it is unavailable for the next 5 months (which is as far as it shows) are the days I wanted it - seems pretty suspicious, especially with the rest of their bait and switch actions. Highest recommendation. I had a few friends coming into town and couldn't fit everyone in my condo. Then after looking at ads on Craigslist, I almost fell for a vacation rental scam. As the date drew near I started to really stress but then I found At Home Inn Chicago. Tessa was a great help and very professional. The place she recommended for my group was PERFECT. Very clean, fantastic location and well outfitted with everything we could possibly need during our stay. She met me at the residence and walked us through how to use everything and was available 24/7 during our stay in case we had any problems. I urgently needed an apartment in Chicago. One friend told me about At Home Inn Chicago and I followed his advice. The apartment was very cozy. The rooms were very nice furnished, very clean and so comfortable, although I have a sleeping problem when I change beds I noticed that I was able to sleep like baby even in the 1st night when the problem really kicks in. When my friends in Chicago came to visit their first words were "WOW nice apartment girl are you sure you can afford it?" but the great part was that it was not expensive at all. My family was planning a reunion in Chicago and couldn't find any affordable hotel arrangements in Lincoln Park. I found At Home Inn online and couldn't have been happier with the result. We were able to find a huge five bedroom house that gave us a wonderful gathering place for the family and was less expensive than individual hotel rooms would have been. It was also wonderful to be able to make breakfast together in the mornings - both for the experience of being together and because it allowed us to save money on our trip. After receiving a phone message the day before I was set to arrive in Chicago with the news that the brownstone I had arranged to rent was no longer available due to problems with the facility, I was primed to write a poor review of the company. However, Francine assured me that they had a property available for me that was within a block of my original booking and that it was an upgrade. It turned out that she was certainly right. Instead of the of the Studio that I had originally booked, I was shown to a beautifully appointed one bedroom unit in the same part of town that I had arranged for originally. We had over 20 people in town for a week, for our wedding. At Home Inn was a downright miracle. We found the OT11 house in old town, which has 4 separate apartments, and fit our whole group perfectly. For that same price, I think the best hotel we could have gotten would be a motel somewhere random in the far north side, or out by Ohare. The house is gorgeous and very newly renovated, from the looks of it. It also saves a lot of money to be able to all get together for breakfast or drinks in one of the apartments rather than going out. One tip --- the apartments don't have a lot of the typical small household things you might need day to day, like scissors or baggies or a notepad, so you might want to bring a few little things. However all the dishes, glasses, & linens that you need are already there! read more

After looking for 2 hotel rooms in Chicago for our Lollapalooza trip, I was shocked, we were going to have to pay over $600 per night total for both rooms over a 5 night period. I stumbled across At Home Inn Chicago and I'm so glad that I did. Not being familiar with Chicago, our wonderful rep found us a beautiful 2 bdrm apartment on the 12th floor of a one year old high rise just 12 blocks from Grant Park. We could not have been more pleased with the help, attention and the $350 per night rate. We received confirmation emails that kept us up to date.The owner met us upon our arrival to give is the keys and gave us the tour and everything that we needed, including coffee. It was a real pleasure to deal with her, she could not have been nicer and accomadating. I highly recommend At Home Inn Chicago and will definately use their services again. read more

The rating could perhaps go a little higher as functionally everything worked (except wi-fi would be lost for some intervals), and it was an ideal location (2525 N Orchard). Although basically clean, the decor was bad. A very small investment could improve it greatly. Externally, there were dead vines growing on the front and side of the house. I stayed at the North Side Suite 2 for five nights. There were six adults and one child in our party. Booking was easy and I was able to reach the owners easily with questions (actually, two adults arrived a few days late and we weren't charged for them!) Upon arriving, I found the apartment to look exactly like the pictures. Everything was spotless; there were enough towels, linens, and kitchen items; and the information booklet included everything we needed. The apartment is in an adorable neighborhood with a playground across the street and numerous parks close by. It was also only a few blocks away from the El, a coffee shop, grocery store, convenience store, and restaurants. The apartment advertises that is sleeps 6, and it does with the pull-out sofa. It did get a little tight, but certainly do-able, and I didn't hear any complaints about the pull-out! I'll be saving all this information for a future stay, as this is a great alternative to nightly rates at a hotel. I would highly recommend this apartment for a family stay, or any other reason you might be visiting the amazing city of Chicago! read more

We have stayed at OT11 which is in the back of the building,with an escape exit to the alley straight from one of the bedrooms. It is on the second floor, noise level is minimal, except for the garbage truck right under your back alley window. Keep in mind it is and old building, so there are creaky noises, smells and random walls and doors everywhere. The pictures on internet are accurate and the kitchen is remodeled beautifully, but the feel of the entire place is like it was remodeled by several owners, and slapped together with a paper glue.For instance:closet doors didnt open in any of the rooms, walls in dining area leaked from the outside and a metal bedframe was bent and sticking out into the tiny walk space, the bathroom had two sinks, which is funny becasue the area is so tiny and it is obvious that each is from another remodel era, the outdoor patio is 8x8x30?, so you feel like you are sitting in a chimney - that is if you can get to it, becasue the living room couch is posiitoned to block the door...some feng shui needed here and it will be a fine place to stay! It is pricey for what you get, but the location is really great if you would like to go to Second City or Steppenwolf, Komehachi sushi and the park. or walk in any direction. Parking is generally not a problem on nearby streets. Overall I think you can get a more modern and spacious place in any of the high rises readily available in this city for this price. read more

My wife and I rented a furnished apartment for a month while we were in transition between selling our condo and moving into a new place. The locaton was phenominal and the unit had all that we needed. My big complaint was that the owners had cats and whenever I was in the apartment I was sneezing. My sister in law had the same problem. The furniture had cat hair embedded in it. I give At Home Inn, 4 stars. I give the owners one star for not disclosing the fact that a cat lived there and for not cleaning thoroughly. At Home should add that question to their list when looking for perspective places to rent. read more

To say the least, I am both disappointed in the company and how our situation was handled and the location where we stayed. First off let me explain the situation and how it was handled: Myself and another business owner were booked for 1928 N. Lincoln Avenue the week of September 9th through September 12th. The day we departed for this location we made several attempts during the day and on the way to Chicago to contact Barbara Pelty (the person of contact or "host") AND the owner for the key and/or code to get into the location upon our arrival. No such luck. We arrived in Chicago around 9:30PM and still no answer to BOTH numbers that were given to us. We were even given an emergency phone number that I called at least 20 times in a four hour period. All times the phone calls went straight to voicemail. During this time as well, the other person I was driving with was making frantic phone calls to other hotels in the area with no luck. After 1.5 hrs of sitting in front of our charged and rented location at 1928 Lincoln Avenue, we came to the conclusion that we might be staying in our car for the evening (Mind you both of us are pregnant-8 months). Finally we found 1 room available at the Westin all the way on the other side of the city. The following morning, on our way to our destination (which took 1.h hrs when it should have only taken 15 minutes if we had stayed in the original location), we sent a 3rd email with our concerns in hopes to get a response and the key for 1928 Lincoln Avenue being everywhere was booked for the next week into the weekend. I would have gone elsewhere but we had no choice but to try for the original location. We finally received contact! It reads as follows: "We are terribly sorry about this mix up! The owner, Barbara, who normally handles check in is in rehab recovering from surgery. Barbara has been a host for nearly 10 years and has never had issues with check ins. She's a fabulous host and extremely conscientious and will feel so bad about this. Our emergency phone was misplaced yesterday and we should have erased the number from our voicemail! Your contract explicitly states however to contact the host 1 week prior to check in. Did you do that? We just feel so bad that we missed you, but are in the office 6 days a week and wish you had called our office sometime over the past week. Did you try us during the day yesterday? We were in the office until 6pm. We will refund you for last night and add an additional $50 to help cover transportation costs. Again, we are so sorry!!!" Please let us know that you get in ok today and like the unit. You can email us or call us at 312.640.1050. Best regards, Elizabeth In the email, Elizabeth states that we should have contacted them 1 week prior to arriving. We booked this location 3 DAYS before we were scheduled to arrive. Second, that "contact email" was for parking arrangements only and did not stated for anything else. Third, the day we departed we started the phone calls at noon our time (11 am Chicago) and spoke to no one but a voicemail which we left several. If you own a business and missed placed your emergency contact phone wouldn't you check periodically the voicemail to it? Lastly, we were both confused on the mention of "deleting" their voicemail for the emergency line? Needless to say we received the code for the location with the first night stay taken off and the cleaning fee of $70 waived as well which I believe is the bottom of the barrel especially with a responding email as stated above. The location itself was just as awful. When we finally arrived at 1928 Lincoln Avenue we had to figure out whether our location was the upstairs or the downstairs apartment. Since we saw no evidence of the upstairs having a place for a "code" to get in we went downstairs. After looking for a few minutes we finally saw an actual lock box that was 6 feet in the air attached to a fence a few feet from the door. Upon entering the location, the smell of 2 week old garbage and mold engulfed us. We quickly tried to find the source but to no avail. The air conditioning was blasting and we tried to find the control for that but with no luck either. We looked EVERYWHERE! Finally at the end of the night we turned down the bed and to our dismay there was a huge stain on the sheets and spiders and spider webs in the corner by the bed. Finally after changing the sheets and settling in we were woken up at 6am from the people above us with heavy stomping of feet. This happened every morning from 4am to 6am. Unfortunately, myself nor my traveling partner will not be using this company nor this location for further trips to Chicago, which we go often. read more

W estayed in Old Town in North Suite 2 for Labor Day weekend. The suite was nice a little small though. We loved the neigborhood, it had such a homey feel. I liked the community grill. We were able to barbecue on Monday which was a nice way toi end our trip. The other guests were very nice. Only issue was that we were below another suite and it was really loud. You could hear loud stumping early in th emorning and late at night which made it very hard to get sleep. Sunday night and Monday it was better. I would definitely request to be on the top suite at my next stay. read more

The condo location, LP21, was perfect for us coming from out of town for a family wedding in Lincoln Park, but that is about all that I can say that was good about it. The condo pictures online are very misleading. The unit is quite run down, rusted kitchen sink, tiles missing around the bathtub, floor in disrepair all over the unit, cracked floor tiles, and in some areas the wood floor was so severely sloping, they had to prop up the front 2 legs of dressers in the BR with 3 shims so the dresser would sit level. Also, only 2 coffee cups and 6 plates total in a 4 BR condo??? I emailed the company the morning after we arrived about the deficiencies (hoping maybe they would at least bring us some coffee cups and plates for our group). No response at all to the email!! None at all!!!! Do yourself a favor and avoid this building. The first and second floor units didn't seem much better as I glanced in the doors while walking up the stairs to our unit (which were covered in very dirty carpeting). read more
