You need a good, solid foundation in your life. Something you know that when you visit, it will not…read morefail to disappoint. Sometimes, you just need a haleem. And Shahi Nan Kebab is the place to go. Not only do they give free poppadoms upon arrival, with a good helping of their unique chilli sauce... Ah, their chilli sauce. I could write lines and lines about the crunchiness of the fresh onions and the tangy yet spicy flavour of it, honestly, a work of genius. What was I talking about again? Oh yes, food, my favourite subject. Moving swiftly on, we went for a portion of seekh kebabs, fries , mutton tikka and their infamous, atleast in my eyes, haleem. Their kebabs and mutton tikka are both delightful and great for all those fellow meat eaters out there. But the haleem is to die for. Served with fresh chillis, ginger root and fried onions garnished on the top, it's the right balance of spice and bursts with flavour. If you're going to pay a visit to Shahi Nan, then I absolutely recommend this dish. Overall, a great place and it never fails to disappoint.

Clean. Staff zipping around. The menu has a range of classic Cantonese dishes; salt pepper squid, kung pow chicken and the like. Although the focus is around the ABC noodle dishes. Choose you meat (A) choose your sauce (B) choose your noodles (C). Wait a little less then 10 minutes. And BAM -- big bowl of noodles. The two of us walked out well fed for just under 15 quid. Decent. It's not the most exciting food in the world. But you didn't come here for that, you came for a quick bulk of meat, veg and noodles; and in that way this noodle bar excels.

The poppadums, mint yoghurt and onion salsa you receive when you first arrive are complimentary. The menu is fantastic. you can get your standard baltis, korma's etc here but they have a fantastic range of very authentic dishes. And the price of the dishes never exceed about £7-8 so it is very affordable. The food is cooked to perfection, you can request changes in your meal and as long as it wont alter the taste to much they will be more than happy to accomodate. The restaurant is unlicensed but this makes for a very pleasant experience, as you do not encounter drunks coming in after closing hours after a pint and vindaloo. (There is an off license 2 mins walk away so can take your own drink in) The restaurant decor is very comtempoarary and the young owners are very pleasant to talk to. I am really sad that I do not live in Acocks Green anymore, purely as I miss Imlee's but I do make special trips to see them now and again. It also lies adjacent to Cannon Hill Park which is one of Birmingham's premier parks being used for a number of interesting events. I prefer restaurants' and take away's to serve only one style of food which adds to the authenticity and quality of the food. Ming's serve both Thai and Cantonese, which are quite different cuisines, so it becomes confusing and each cuisine is created in half measures. Luckily the starter I ordered of Tom Yum Goong Thai soup was delicious, light, fresh and flavoursome. The aromatic crispy duck was nice even though I don't usually eat duck, I enjoyed this. I had a duck for 7.50. All in all not a bad experience.

Unfortunately, my experience here has been somewhat short-lived. Their food is delicious and value for money. I suppose the prices reflect the target market, which are probably Birmingham University students who live in the student halls accommodation opposite. My common complaint about Chinese takeaway is the excessive salt and grease, but I didn't have this problem here! However, I did have problems with the owners. The last time I visited, I was with my brother. He was placing an order but the owner couldn't understand what he was saying. So were pointing at the menu and asking questions about the portion sizes. To our disbelief, we were snapped at and told that we were barred because we were apparently mocking the man! It's a shame they lost some loyal customers over a pitiful misunderstanding.
