There were way too many students to fit in the small space. The student to coach ratio is absurd, there were 14 students and one teacher in our age range's class (preteen to young teen). There was not enough seating for parents. Parents had to stand the entire duration of the class, sit on floors and one lady brought her own lawn chair. The parking isn't that great, that is if you can find a spot. There were several "problem" students that seemed to distract the coach quite frequently. When the students were paired up for matches, many weren't even monitored by the coach. How could he? With 14 students, there were 7 matches going on at once and he missed so much. Maybe an assistant would help. I didn't like how I saw some of the "bully" types take advantage of the coach's head being turned. All in all, it has potential because many people seem to be interested in it. However, if this place wants to stay in the game, they better step it up. My advice: Spend a few dollars and buy some decent seating (not football benches) and get a second trainer or assistant in the mix.

However, I've no doubt that many others who've came and trained here will feel the same. While we are a small school, our sense of community is unrivaled. Our students all come from different backgrounds with different goals, ideas and beliefs, however if you were to come and experience a class with us, that won't be the first thing you'd noticed. You'd notice that aside from training and sparring, our classes are filled with conversations, jokes and banter. I admit that you will find gyms with better facilities and equipment, but I'll be hard pressed to find one with a more accepting and welcoming atmosphere than that of ours or any of the other Gracie United schools for that matter. Our professor(instructor),Matthew Stock, strives to maintain an environment that pushes the students to better themselves and allow us to be competitive, while at the same time reminding us to humble ourselves. You will seldom find someone more dedicated to teaching this craft. He has kept this school open even after years of not being able to turn a profit. In every tournament that one of our members has competed in, he always makes sure to show up to support and coach us, no matter if it was the entire adult class that signed up or a handful of the kids class. We are a small gym and we can only make due with the small amount of money we produce. However, that shouldn't discourage you from coming and experiencing it for yourself. The more people that come and sign up, the more we would be able to provide back for our students. Because this is more than just a business, it's a family.

I don't go here regularly but I've dropped by to roll quite a few times since 2006…read more It's exactly what I would expect from a bjj gym in Nola. It's like a pop-up in the back of a gym. There are exposed brick walls and some other characteristics you expect to find in these old buildings. It's next to a bar. The students are all friendly and many of them are interesting characters with crazy patches or mismatched neon color rash guards. One guy had a patch on his gi of Johnny Cash flipping the bird, which is the best possible patch if you ask me. I'm surprised there isn't a bar in the back of the gym or a brass band playing while we spar. Professor Matthias is an excellent teacher. I'd also imagine he'd be a great coach ringside as he is always very good at identifying opportunities for attack when we spar. He's also a really down to earth guy with some good stories. I wish I had the time to do bjj seriously again. It's frustrating to know that your skills are devolving while the bjj game keeps changing and evolving, but I guess that's just what happens when you get old. If I did have the time and inclination I would be proud to be a member here. You should check it out.
