Returned to Associated Dentists after a 10 absence due to a change in dental insurance and so glad to be back. Doctor Yick was wonderful and the hygienist, Skylar, couldn't have been more professional. Both explained every step of the exam and the cleaning in a clear and understandable manner and gave tips on how to improve my dental care. Communication was excellent. The office has excellent, up to date equipment and procedures which made me feel like I was receiving excellent care. I actually enjoyed my dentist appointment and that's not a usual comment. The staff is always friendly and professional. I've never had to wait long after checking in. My dental plan was explained to me in detail in a way I could understand, and all of my questions were answered. They listened to my concerns and preferences, and I am very satisfied with the plan we came up with. The facility is nice and clean. When the other dentist couldn't cut it whatsoever & Dr. Butkus saved my tooth. Take a look at these pictures & you'll see what I mean (don't get too grossed out where you can see red). All the photos are labeled for which part of the process/ sequence they convey. A previous Wayzata dentist with decent reviews kept failing in having a crown work properly (it would just fall out) & charged allot of money anyway, meanwhile the tooth was more endangered of rotting to the nerve & that leaves me far worse off and not much else is more scary than tooth failures & pain. Dr. Butkus has become an adhesive specialist & taken further courses in this speciality and so this helpless tooth became a hope realized just in time. Wow. Lucky me! If you have a challenging tooth & you have a chance to see Dr. Butkus, lucky you! Well, in the past three years I've had four crowns so it also pays to realize how to have fewer cavities - and I learned something valuable and I will share it here & check back in a few years & let you all know, if you're curious, if the results are reflecting my efforts & intent. While I eat a great diet low in sugars and low in carbs I was still getting too much tooth decay! What is the likely culprit? Cream, milk, half & half in my daily warm cozy beverage (no sugar & no artificial sweetener, but yes on the dairy). I'd sip on this for hours, most days. Well, my mouth saliva ph was measuring at 6.0 & it can dip to 5.5 ph & that is too acidic & that lower & frequent ph contributes to cavities. The saliva breaking down the sugars in the dairy makes a more acidic mouth! No more dairy in my sipping hot (non-caffeinated non-coffee) beverage! I'm working on raising my mouth ph to 7. Dr. Butkus & his assistant Andrea both recommended I try "Elementa" (can be bought directly on their website & on Amazon; it's a nano silver mouthwash that has had good results for troubled patients. Well, blessings on your teeth wherever you go & Associated Dentists sure houses one of the best. Dental work needs the hand of an artist & Dr. Butkus is one. read more

Both were so kind and friendly and made the atmosphere very welcoming. Dr. Ruhlmann was extremely knowledgeable and explained everything in great detail. Was a patient for years. Dentists and hygienist's excellent for most part. Recently had temp hygienist. She was a sadist. Told her three time she was hurting me. Her response "there's pain when removing tartar." I immediately got out of chair and left. Billing office a different story. Manager unprofessional, aggressive, money hungry and psycho. Recently had crown and fillings. They insisted I pay a fantasy full blown retail "estimate" NOW! Asked to wait until insurance claim settled. NO! I wasn't leaving without paying TODAY. I refused and left. Manager threatened collections, calling police, withholding crown. I paid later that day with Care Credit. When insurance paid, was refunded 2/3 of the money I paid. I had to apply for credit I didn't need because of a STUPID POLICY. If other patients stiff you, DONT visit that on me! I was badly mistreated. That manager should be fired because of her predatory billing practices. There are plenty of dental offices in twin cities. I suggest using them. read more

Dr. Butkis is great. Their office manager 1st could aim to dress more professionally than a graphic t-shirt from Target. She wasn't professional in resolving a scheduling issue that wasn't confirmed with me and wanted to act offended/play victim regarding my belief in lack of communication from her administrative staff. I was referred to Associated Dentists by a friend and had a crown replaced. The new crown wasn't seated right and needed to be redone. While removing the new crown, the dentist broke my tooth which then needed to be extracted. The extraction was done by Dr. Hernandez. I am 58 years old and never have I experienced such a lack of dignity and respect for a patient as I experienced from Hernandez. He had removed the tooth and prepped for an implant but had complications which caused a substantial amount of pain. I explained this to him on the phone and was requesting something for my pain. He acted like I was a junky seeking drugs and was so unbelievably rude and nasty that I asked him how to initiate a formal complaint which he ignored. He told me to contact my personal doctor regarding my pain and did not provide medication necessary to address the pain.. That a doctor would question or ignore a patient's complaint of pain is unforgiveable. My wife who is/was a patient at Associated was listening to the call and was shocked. The overall customer service there was severely lacking and my advice would be to steer clear. read more

Would not recommend for new patients. I'm sure it's great if you have been going for decades, like many of the reviews. However, they do not make it easy for new patients. I was turned away due to the fact I already had X-rays taken this year at my previous dentist and insurance only covers one set a year. Only an exam and X-rays are done your initial visit. A second visit is required for a cleaning. No exceptions. Not sure why they can't request my X-rays from my previous dentist, or do an exam and cleaning, saving me money and a second visit. Most dental clinics will do both. While I cannot speak for the quality of work since I was unable to go, I was disappointed by their new patient procedures. My wife is a current patient and we were planning on our entire family going here, including our young kids for their first visit to the dentist. That is no longer the case. read more

Let me begin by saying that I truly believe customer service is a direct reflection of what a business stands for. If you can't treat your patients in a respectful way, then what does that say about the service you provide? I can't rate the actual dentists here but the receptionist was TERRIBLE. As soon as I walked in (as a prospective new patient) she immediately had attitude before I even had anything to say. She asked me my age before asking anything else as to imply I was too young to be there alone? I'm an adult, married and I have a child. She was incredibly rude and talked to me as if I was an infant even after answering her question of my age. I have gone elsewhere for dental needs and definitely DO NOT recommend this place. read more

Anybody who moves to my 'hood, or needs a dentist - I tell them this is the place to go! I've been going here for almost 20 years (oh God.... really ?? But I started going to them right after I started teaching in St. Paul....) Yes, its beautiful and clean, and there are TV's... but it's the people that make me like going to the dentist! I love Dr. Resch. He's my guy! I had a problem with a crown (I avoided getting one, and then avoided it more.. until my tooth cracked) He never judged, just said - "Yep, you're going to have to get a crown on that tooth! Trust me... it will happen." It did, and I had problems with it. The staff made sure I had all of my appointments that coordinated with MY schedule, and got everything done top notch! From cleanings, to fillings, to crowns... I've always felt really really well cared for! It's like I'm going to visit friends twice a year. I kinda wanna go more often, but there's that insurance thing! read more

My family always experiences the best care at Associated Dentists, and I'm so happy that our kids are getting such wonderful care there as well! Hygiene appointments happen on the regular and are reliably fantastic. Our 7 year old has recently been in the dentist's big chair as well. I am incredibly impressed with the care and service I received as a new patient at Associated Dentists in Highland Park. I will certainly be back as a regular customer. First, Associated Dentists scheduling process was quick and easy. They were able to fit me in within a quick time, and the customer service was always kind and accommodating. The facility itself is nice, and the wait time was minimal. Check-in process was a breeze. Nanette Flaten was my hygienist, and she was AMAZING. By far the best hygienist I've ever had... she made sure I was relaxed (despite a general dental phobia), was always gentle and kind, and did a FANTASTIC job on my teethers. I'm not sure they've ever looked this good! I look forward to returning to Associated Dentists (not sure I ever thought I would say that), and hope encourage others to do the same as well. read more

Their new "pay up front" policy is totally bizarre AND corrupt. I paid upfront before my service was provided, and still received a bill for the same amount. I spoke to the billing department who said they'd look into it, and received no answer. I didn't want to pay twice... but I had to because I was sent to collections. So I paid twice and my credit was damaged. Also, since I was sent to collections, I am no longer welcome at their clinic. WTF! I've been going to this dentist for 10 years. I had a check up to get a section me opinion on cavities. Personally, I get anxious over the dentist. I was told that because of anxiety/worry they can give you something to calm you down. When I got to the room I was so nervous (although it was a new patient examination, I had anxiety ) . In the consultation they mentioned they offer things (nitric oxide, val. , etc..)to calm you down. When I got to the room for the examination , I got really nervous and asked for something . They laughed out loud (the doctor and hygienist ) . My nerves where already pushed to the max because I was nervous so that pushed me over. I understand that from their perspective it might've been a simple examination and not needed, but offering something to calm the patient down is based on the patient's need and not the type of the procedure. All in all it was unprofessional and lead to a very bad experience. read more

Associated Dentists is the place to be! For a large office, you couldn't ask for a better staff that treats you like family. There is a Dentist and Hygienist for every type of personality and I know the care I receive is top notch! The exams are very thorough and they take time to explain everything. These people are great. From the the receptionists to the dentist, I had a great experience. My first time to visit. I needed an emergency crown. I got in quickly. They fixed me just fine. I am a new patient . I love the atmosphere of this building. Tvs to watch, plenty of space, pediatrics available etc. So far i have had a routine cleaning and three cavities filled. The hygienist was super friendly and the dr. Howley ( the lady?) was amazing at doing my fillings ! It took only an hour and i literally felt NO PAIN. I have never had such a pain free and friendly experience. I am usually running from the dentist, but now i look forward to getting my teeth perfected :) i do wish my insurance which is widely accepted everywhere else covered more at this location.. I had a bad toothache and had not found a dentist since I moved to St. Paul so I thought I would give Associated a try. I called and made an appointment. The woman at the front desk was asking me odd personal questions as a way to "get to know me" but it seemed like an odd kind of marketing and that this information would be written down somewhere for a future visit. When I finally did get to see Dr. Coats, he said I needed a root canal but that I was in luck because he could do it himself. Every other dentist I've gone to who said I needed a root canal referred me out. The whole time he was performing the root canal, he kept asking his assistant if there was an additional root. It didn't fill me with a sense of confidence. When it was over, I returned to the lobby where they demanded $1,100 for the procedure even though I was not told that the root canal would cost $1,100 before it was performed. I knew it would be expensive but I didn't expect them to demand the money before I left. I used my debit card and went home and transferred money to cover the cost of the root canal. After a couple of months, I had some pain in the same tooth. I sent to a different dentist who told me the root canal needed to be redone because there was a gap which he showed me on the xray. When I called Associated Dentists to see if there was any kind of guarantee on the work, the woman at the front desk said she would need to talk with Dr. Coats and she would get back to me the next day. I never heard back from them. Buyer beware and be sure to ask up front about costs and guarantees. I get that things can go wrong the combination of the things listed above are not good customer service. Buyer beware. I went to a different dentist (Park Dental) and had a totally different experience. They were pleasant, professional, told me about charges up front before I asked, told me which things were immediately needed and offered options. Professional and top notch. read more

Wow...If I could give ZERO stars, I would. CONSUMER BEWARE - this office does NOT make a practice of offering the information of whether or not they are in network for your insurance or not. I am new to Minnesota with new insurance (Delta, normal plan). I assumed if I called Associated to ask if they take Delta and they say "YES" (which they did), I'm good to go. WRONG. Even though they whole heartedly assured me that Delta Dental is fine (and had multiple opportunities to tell me I'd get more thorough coverage elsewhere), I'm now out $600 for the most BASIC visits (exam, cleaning, filling) because they simply FAILED to mention that their dentists are actually NOT in network (so everything is only covered at a percentage). Just know that there were multiple instances where they could have easily brought this up with me as I told them repeatedly how GREAT it was to finally have dental coverage again. They do this all day, it isn't rocket science for Associated. I am 100% covered at other dentists, they knew I wouldn't be fully covered under their practice and even when I balked at having to pay so much out of pocket they STILL didn't say it was because they were "out of network". I feel like this was a classic bait and switch scheme because of how many opportunities they had to inform me of why I was being hit with so many bills. I wish I'd taken more stock of the reviews here that mentioned their billing issues. And apparently, my insurance co has had this very issue with them in the past, so go figure. UPDATE: 7/12/17 A very sad update. And much more important than the info above for any potential new patients: Associated sent us away with TWO cavities that my son still needed filled (by then, I'd finally figured out they weren't in network, so we stopped all appts). These were his first cavities EVER, at 11 yrs old. He's pretty frightened of shots, so of course they offered us nitrous, which would have been out of pocket (and don't forget, even though we are fully insured, we would also have unknowingly been left with a large % of the bill uncovered). So I took my son to a dentist that WOULD cover us under Delta, and wouldn't you know it....looking right at Associated's X-rays, and a detailed examination of all his teeth....and HE HAS NO CAVITIES. None. So not only did Associated gouge us for a portion of work we were led to believe was covered (for 2 family members!)....they were also filling cavities that were non-existent (they did 3 on me, which seemed excessive, but who thinks to get a second opinion on dental work?! Exactly no one). So they were going to "fill" two cavities on a small child who is petrified of needles. Seriously?? Calling Better Business Bureau on this. Just PLEASE BEWARE. read more

The Associates dentist my husband saw refused to see him further because of a confusion that arose with our primary dentist's records. My husband had switched to Associates because they're open on the only time he could get off work, Saturdays. The he refused to continue treating my husband after the mix-up, and said he wasn't going to be a "second opinion". This and other strange behavior over this incident was very upsetting; we wrote to the partners, and they sent us a check for something like $13, and no letter. read more

I will be looking for a new dentist. I have been a patient for over 10 years. I don't have a problem with the dentists but the support staff and systems make getting into see them difficult to impossible. My experiences have been an announcing of my personal data by the receptionist, including social security number, while on a phone call in the middle of the patient reception area. The other involved me trying to reach them to confirm an appointment. The number on the card got me to a recording that the office is currently closed. This was 1 hour and 30 minutes after they were supposed to be open. I left a message, didn't receive any call back. Called again 30 minutes later and got a person who took down my information and again no call back. So I drove 45 minutes to the office, assuming my message was delivered, when I arrived I was informed that I didn't have an appointment. They offered to try to fit me in but would not commit to getting me out in a timely manner. This level of service is dreadful, time consuming and personally risky. read more

Major issues! Rude front desk and billing, pretty much everyone except the dentist. I started in December to get a tooth pulled. I go in, hoping to get my tooth pulled, I get introductions, xrays, and agreement that my tooth needs to come out... make another appointment, we didn't schedule that time today. Appointment made. I make the appointment to go in, hoping to get my tooth pulled, I get a consultation to go over my xrays. I call that morning, due to multiple work meetings, and ask to do the consult over the phone. No, sorry we don't do that. Ok, so I make yet another appointment, now its February and finally my tooth is out! I inquire about a bridge to allow me to chew on both sides again and agree to have them verify with the insurance regarding cost. A few weeks later I received the pre-estimate from my insurance saying that Associated Dentists is a Preferred Provider and some "negotiated/contract pricing" exists. I call the office to review the pricing to fully understand how much I personally will need to save. In return I get a very rude Colleen who tells me in no uncertain terms that they do not have "negotiated/contract pricing" with Delta Dental and I will owe the entire portion not covered by insurance. I attempt to question her on this but only get a more snappy "we do not have any negotiated/contract pricing". I ask to speak with her manager and get hung up on. I call Delta Dental, they confirm Associated Dentists is in fact a Preferred Provider and yes all items on the pre-estimate without the 88 code are in fact discounted due to the association with the dentist. There is an almost $2000 difference in these prices so I contact the dentist again. Patti in billing tells me Colleen spoke with me and I was rude. I ask Patti if I'm being rude now, she says no. I say I spoke with her the same way I'm speaking with you. (Just trying to figure out my budget for this bridge to eat again.) Patti goes on to say she hasn't gotten anything from the insurance company and perhaps I'm wrong. I reply I'm looking at the pre-estimate now and it shows the dentist procedure cost, the contract pricing cost, the patient responsibility and the insurance responsibility and the costs are different. I'm attempting to get verification of the total cost and ensure I'm not paying more than I need to. Patti explains she doesn't have it and they do not have a contract pricing cost and basically I'm wrong. She further goes on to tell me that they don't seem to be able to make me happy and I can take my business to another dentist, she will make sure to send me a letter saying they will no longer see me as a patient. Wait, what did I do? Oh yeah, I asked about the total patient cost that would be due. I guess I'm banned from going there for seeking the real and true cost prior to having the work done! Receptionist and Billing both provide HORRIBLE customer service and apparently do not need any future business because if they did they sure wouldn't be turning people away for asking about a ~$2k difference. Perhaps they make enough money already and my $4000-$6000 is of no consequence. Too bad I can't just deal with the actual dentists. read more
