From week to week you could find a local teeny bopper indie band, a political speaker or a cabaret evening. Fundamentally it is still a music venue though, downstairs is quaintly cosy so not much room for dancing, but it gives a nice Greenwich Village cafe vibe. There's a really nice wall feature of a 3-D rooftop scene and little star lights cover the rest of the walls downstairs, apparently the original scenery from CATS the musical. The light and airy upstairs is used as a restaurant/bar where food is served Thur - Sat 6pm til 10pm & Sun 12pm til 3.30pm & has free wi-fi. Unusually for Brighton the downstairs is closed on Friday & Saturday nights and available for hire. Definitely worth checking out if your at a loose end on a weekday evening.

With varnished wood furnishings, a high ceiling and one wall covered in neatly framed photos of local and famous musicians; the upstairs bar has a refined cleanliness found in only a handful of places in Brighton. The atmosphere is best when the place is at a comfortable capacity, as it suits a seated audience. Serving average quality food and a reasonable selection of drinks the upstairs bar is always a nice place to be. However, the real draw is the cabaret bar downstairs. Having previously hosted such names as Amy Winehouse, The Kooks, Herbie Flowers and Chris Difford, the downstairs bar is definitely where it's at. The walls have been made to look like a charming cityscape complete with real, backlit windows and twinkling stars. This combined with the low ceiling and slightly raised stage makes the venue an intimate place, better suited to bands that are comfortable dealing with much audience participation. Drinks are a little expensive but definitely worth it. The simple pleasure of watching great music in a genuinely charming setting is enough for me to just shut up and pay. Great for folk, blues, jazz or anything rootsy. One of my favorite gig venues!

If you smoke, The Becket is fantastic as it boasts one of the best outdoor smoking areas in Sussex; heated with a 42" plasma screen so you don't miss any sport when your having a cheeky smoke! They do have an excellent patio area too which is great for watching the World drift by in the summer months. The pool table here is excellent - a real old fashioned American style one which is kept in tip-top condition. They also have some great local bands playing which attracts a pretty impressive crowd.

Now it's just nice, having gone through several transformations on the food front, (first up and then back down-market). It's now settling back to more straightforward pub food (which we haven't yet sampled), and it still retains a good choice of real-ales. The staff seem friendly enough, but the atmosphere isn't quite what it was, with just the wrong sort of juke-box music in the background (to me, rock and historic pubs just don't gel). There are now regular gigs by live bands and other acts. Hopefully, it'll get back on its feet now that it has new landlords. I would recommend the roasts and a good way to feel like you have got out of Brighton and done something worthwhile with a Sunday. A great, slightly quirky, traditional pub in a great Sussex village…read more You won't find Chiddingly by accident - it's off a narrow lane off the A22, between Lewes and Eastbourne. The village itself dates back to Domesday and has a fine mediaeval church (worth a visit while there). In fact, the village has 55 entries in the listed building guide, so there's more than enough history to occupy the most hardened tourist before retiring to the pub for refreshment. The pub building dates back to 1774 (and possibly earlier) and is a Grade II listed building; the frontage of blue and red bricks looks suitably traditional, and through the front door there is a main bar area to the left and a wonderful snug room (with a huge fireplace) to the right. The interior is all wooden beams and stone floors, with a bar serving a good selection of real ales and generous portions of traditional pub grub, all with friendly bar staff. (NB The food is popular, so be prepared to wait at busy periods). Towards the rear of the pub, the walls are festooned with old pictures and photographs, and a motorcycling theme predominates: it is a well-known meeting place for bikers, and there's a club board by the back door giving details of events, runs, etc. Outside is a large garden, with lots of seating. The rear of the pub is decorated with old enamel advertising signs, covering every subject imaginable. Also at the back is the large, surfaced car park - perfect for rows of shiny (or, in my case, not so shiny) motorbikes. If all that wasn't enough, the pub also host a fortnightly folk and blues club (http://www.6bellsfolk.co.uk ) as well as its biker meets. Oh, and on my last visit, my mate and I (on our bikes) opted for 2 pints of soda and lime to quench our thirst, with a couple of packets of crisps. It came to £1.80. The ample £250 000 sound system and professional staging gives every show a sense of occasion, lifting the venue above the amateur but not so high as to be inaccessible. Adorned with enough character and history it's possibly the only independent venue in Brighton that consistently delivers first-class entertainment in an elegant setting at an affordable price.

The venue is fairly small inside, but it has a wicked atmosphere. The garden is a very large area but unfortunately closes at half 10. This is because some d*ckheads moved in next door and filled noise complaints (honestly who does that?) and after almost being shutdown, they now have to close the garden early and there's a grumpy security guard who'll tell you to shutup if you're mildly noisy. There's a chinese restaurant attached, which isn't as good as it used to be, but it's useful to be able to order food at the bar. It's now £8 per ticket for smaller bands, so feels a bit pricey, especially seeing as drinks and food are about that too.

There's one main room wrapped around three sides of a central bar, and a small outdoor area at the rear. They serve a range of traditional real ales, and a fairly standard pub grub menu (sandwiches, chips, baked potatoes, burgers, cottage pie, lasagne, chicken, omelettes etc) are served daily at lunchtimes, and Tuesday to Thursday evenings. Prices are pretty good - most mains are £7-£9 - and there is a 2 for £10 evening offer on selected items. On Sunday there is a traditional roast for £9 but there are lighter options including vegetarian and fish dishes. The pub has both regular quiz nights and live jazz evenings. Worth a visit.
