I've been an infrequent shopper at Assal market. It's my go to place for good lamb in Vienna. I've gotten good lamb shanks and other cuts for holiday cooking and always been satisfied. I've tried a few things in the store that you don't get at Giant, Fresh Market, or Whole Foods. The middle eastern packaged foods and spices are nice to try and I have not been disappointed with my purchase. Some of the packaged spices are very difficult to find elsewhere. Service has always been friendly and helpful. I plan to return and try more of their offerings in the store. A nice place in Vienna to provide variety in your grocery selection. Amoo Masoud (the owner) is so friendly and kind, he always welcomes us with his hospitality each time we visit and we always leave with a smile. We went there knowing that there are "addition" problems at this place. However we were visiting out of town and didn't have time to shop around. We bought 8 items and then the register "crashed' and he said we weren't charged. Charged us for the same 8 items again and he said we would be charged once. We have two charges on our card, interestingly 2 different prices for the 8 items. Will never go here again. Terrible. read more

The bread here is absolutely amazing. The chicken is organic and fresh. Andre the butcher is a friendly guy. Did I mention the bread was amazing? Here is my problem, the owner. The guy is "over friendly" calls everyone his sister and brother and really makes me feel a little uncomfortable every time I visit the store. The owner's son on the other hand is a really friendly guy in a good way. He's authentic, greets all the customers and seems to care about service. I wish he was at the register every time and try and go to the store only when the son is there. His dad is a little too much of a sales guy. He's always telling you about how great this and that is. A great neighborhood middle eastern store that stocks up on daily grocery essentials to specialty items. They have a butcher's counter, a bakery counter and every one of their aisles is stocked to the gills with stuff. A great place to go and pick up new things to try out. I'm not sure what Falcon T was talking about, but Assal is actually a very good market carrying most every Persian necessity (and quite a few treats). I've never had a problem; in fact the owner is very nice, though I'm sure it helps that my kids are cute. Yes, you do have to wait sometimes for him or his wife to come up and check you out, but it's a family run place. If you want immediate service on garbage food at bad prices, go to Food Lion or some other regular American grocery. I've never run into any problems with the quality of the groceries or packaged food at Assal. They have fresh veggies, delicious warm barbary breads and naan, and decent pastires for an overall good price. Though, I'd recommend to Agha Assal to see if he can get an Asian grocery hookup somehow, because I've never seen vegetables as low priced as at one of those places. read more

Love this place for the random spice or Middle Eastern product that I need for a recipe. The owner and other employees are always quite friendly and the prices for some items are often lower than Giant. One time I purchased some baklava that was pre-packaged and was pretty disappointed, but the pita is always good. read more

Let me preface this by saying that I used to like Assal quite a bit. The reason I went here is because of the butcher (Andre). A week ago I when I went Andre was not there and I had to deal with the owner directly. What an awful mistake. I should have walked right out and gotten my chicken t Yaz. Anyhoo, the owner butchers my chicken, and not in a good way! He took NO time or effort and chopped the chicken in several un-even pieces. I wish I could have sent it back, but I do not like to waste food. The owner is quite and un-authentic type of person. He's got this fake smile on his face. If ever you ask for help or a recommendation, he tells you that, wait a second, but I've got "the best" for you. And only for me right? This is usually the beginning of a LIE! On a separate occasion when I went here I was cheated out of $10. I gave a $20, and sticky fingers magoo claimed it was a $10 and gives me change for a $10. He had the gall on my way out to say "thank you my brother"! Andre....please come back and always be here, I know they work you to the bone man, and I see the way some of the customers treat you, it is not right, but you are the only one holding this sad operation together. read more

I think this place is great. As a vegetarian, I am always looking to try out new food and came here to have a look around knowing that there would be a good selection. It was somewhat overwhelming because the store is small but it is jam packed with various items. It's a good place to buy lentils, spices and powers, such as chickpea powder. I agree with the comments that Ali left, that this guy is dishonest. The owner is nothing short of a crock. Most of the items in the store do not have a price tag on them, which makes him charge you whatever he wants at check out. I bought discounted fruits in front of him, and he wanted to charge me full price for it. Also, prices are 40-50% more of what you would normally pay in similar Middle Eastern stores in Falls Church area. Place is crowded and isles are narrow, making it difficult for two people to shop in the same isle. Skip this place all together! read more

Went to Assal after being extremely disappointed with Yas Bakery. Although this place is a bit more simple and homely, their pastries/sweets, service and prices surpass Yas by far. The people behind the counter, as well as the owner, were extremely nice, accommodating and giving. After scouting out the options, I had my mom later come to order sweets/pastries for my wedding in April last year. We did a large order with mass quantities of different sweets. The owner was on-time and had everything ready for pick-up by the date/time he had promised. He even threw in some free boxes along with the order. The price was dramatically lower than what we would have paid at Yas for the same thing. The sweets themselves were amazing. I had numerous guests compliment us on the deserts and asked us where they were from. They looked beautiful too. I will be sure to come back here for any of my Persian grocery/bakery needs in the future. I'd much rather come to an establishment where I feel welcome and at home. Though we have been shopping here for more than 10 years, it convenient, has all what we need whenever we plan to have a Middle Easter dish or treat, we keep our eyes fixed to register when we check out. It happened more than once that we were over charged on items that were marked less than what we were charged for, or sometimes we were charged for items that were never i our shopping cart. Yesterday, it happened again. Apparently we did not pay close attention to the cash register while checking out, when we got home we found out that two items, of 13 that we bought, were charged almost 30 percent more than what they are marked for. The funny thing is that those items still have there price tag on them, but the price we were made tom pay was 30 percent more. The owner has been very friendly with us and with all customers. He is used to take our jokes and criticism in a casual way. We brought his attention many time to the fact that his shop is some what dirty, or untidy, and crowded with unorganized items. More importantly, we brought his attention to his bad practice of overcharging us, but unfortunately he never missed a chance to do it again and again, and we never gave up on shopping there. My ADVICE: pay close attention to the cash register when checking out, count your items and double check the price on each and compare it with the receipt. read more

Great local Persian market. Always has everything I need whenever I plan on making a Persian dish which requires ingredients I can't find at an everyday market. Veggies and fruits are always fresh...I've never had a problem with them. I have been shopping here for years (since being married) and remember going here with my dad when I was very young (used to be at a different location back then), since he always shopped (and still does) from here. Good quality and good pricing. I don't usually buy pastries here (go to Yas down the street for that) but their fresh cooked bread is always delicious, warm and excellent quality. Their mortadella is very delicious also, although a bit pricey but I think it's pretty much the same price at any Persian market. The owner is very nice and always willing to help and greets all of the "regulars" on a first name basis. The butcher area of the store is also well managed and they have a wonderful selection of meat. read more
