Yelp Review 2025 #196:
Rio de Janeiro doesn't fall short when it comes to endless grilled meats. There's a lot of churrascarias in Rio and finding the one you should go to could all depend on a number of factors. I narrowed it down to two places: one was close to my hotel and it had sushi, and then this place called Assador that has crispy pork and a view of Sugarloaf Mountain. Heck, I even posted a poll on Instagram so my friends can help me decide. "Sushi and AYCE meat? Sounds like an identity crisis", said one of them.
The sushi and meat place won't let me book a table until a week prior. Assador let me book right away. And let me tell you how important it is to reserve a table here. The day I went there were people without reservations trying to get on the waitlist at 11:30am and they don't open til 12pm. I was able to zip right in. And by the time I was done with my meal, there were people at a huge waiting area, the bar, and outside!
Front of the house isn't the friendliest bunch but they're probably tired of dealing with people with no reservations. I'm here for the meat and not the front of the house. I asked to be seated outside so I have a view of Sugarloaf Mountain.
Three minutes after getting seated, here comes a cart with sides and salads: mushrooms, carrots & beans, couscous, green salad, soup, onions. A second cart pulls up: chicken salad, chickpea salad, caesar salad, shredded cheese, beet salad. I tried a few sides: mushrooms and chicken salad. I have to leave lots of room for meat! Then comes the basket of pao de queijo, and fried polenta with cheese - both are hot and delicious. If there are sides on their menu you want that's not on the cart like French fries, you can request it from your server because who wants fries from a cart? A guy with a big container of fresh hot garlic bread comes to my table and it smelled so good so I had to try one. The butter is still melting on the hot bread - it was heaven. A server asked me for my drink order, side dishes and any sauces I wanted. I'm just now realizing I asked for fried banana (I've been back for a month now)! That's what I noticed about this place, you have to follow up on your requests at least twice.
And then here come the meats!!! First one to be offered to me was lamb and I don't really eat lamb. Then, Picanha! Another cart of sides with hearts of palm, asparagus, potato salad, salad, mozzarella cheese.
Meats I Tried:
Picanha (Rump Cap), Alcatra (Top Sirloin), Fraldinha (Flank Steak) Filet Mignon, T-Bone I T-Bone, Ancho Premium (Ribeye Steak), Tomahawk, Costela de boi (Beef Ribs), Cupim (Beef Hump - skip this. It's dry!), and Panceta Pururuca (Crispy Pork Belly. You need this).
With a carafe of refreshing maracuja juice, I was able to try so many kinds of meat. I finished all 4 of my pao de queijo. I didn't have room for dessert. I finished my meal and waited for somebody to bring me my check for 15 minutes. I had to be somewhere so I got up and grabbed a server to let him know I needed to pay and leave. I wanted to pay with cash but was 1 Reais short and the server told me it was ok. So nice of him.
Take note that lots of streets are closed in Rio on Sundays. My Uber dropped me off in front of a park and I had to walk about 7 minutes to get to Assador. read more
