Dogs are allowed in the park, just not on the beach. That wasnt an inconvenience, as we were having a picnic. Their bathrooms were clean and it an actual building, so no worries about stinky porta-potties. Parking can be a minor challenge, as there isn't a dedicated lot, mostly pulling up and parking on the dirt area off the road. Not a problem, but some people chose to parallel park vs parking vertically off, which greatly reduced the amount of vehicles able to park in the area. There are some paths in the woods if you wanted to go on a nature hike. They also have trash receptacles there which i felt were great, as people who don't like taking their trash with them could actually throw it out instead of leaving it laying around. I would also recommend bug spray. The ambience was nice and the park was clean. I would visit here again.

From where I was staying I had many choices of beaches to discover, but I am so glad that it was this one that I did discover. Getting here was a bit tricky for me, but with determination anything is possible. When I arrived to the area where everyone was parking, I see that I was not the only one that had the idea to head the beach that day. I parked and started trekking my way to the beach. It's a beautiful short walk from where you park. Along the way you get to see a lot of the great people that live in the area. Each one of them at least smiled at me as we passed. One even said that it is beautiful back there and I was going to enjoy myself. She did not lie. Like many said, this is an old fort. So there is some history to this place. Which makes it that much more of a beautiful place. As soon as I reached the beach area I didn't look around much, I just b-lined it to the beach, kicked off my shoes and stood there and waited for that rush of water over my feet. The type where you feel shocked because of the temperature difference, but one that relieves all the stress you have been feeling. Nearing sunset this place affords some pretty great pictures to be taken. The pier allows you to venture out onto the water without having to swim your way out. Even though the water is a bright green you can see all the way to the bottom. Man, this is exactly what I needed on a vacation. Sun, sand and surf. Breathing in that salty air really cleared my mind.

A small lake in an out of the way place, Southern Massachusetts near the corner of Connecticut and Rhode Island. Shaped a bit like a figure eight with two peninsulas that almost cut the lake in half, the name is from an Algonquin language and is humorously translated as: "You fish on your side, I'll fish on my side, and nobody fish in the middle." Cold and frozen at the beginning of February, the entrance I visited has a large parking lot and a large walking loop. Even in this weather, two women were getting their exercise.

It's quite a mouthful! Purportedly the largest natural lake in Massachusetts, it's only about three miles long and one mile wide, which perhaps says more about Massachusetts lakes than it does this one. Still, it's a terrific local destination. The lake has a couple of marinas, three waterfront restaurants accessible by boat, a town beach with restrooms and a snack bar, and the popular Indian Ranch entertainment venue, which also includes an RV campground and the newer and quite good Samuel Slater's Restaurant. The lake offers something for almost everyone: fishing, swimming, boating, tubing, water skiing (there's even a water ski club), kayaking, and enough open water for all of those activities to coexist somewhat comfortably. Weekdays are wonderfully peaceful, making it easy to find a quiet cove or enjoy a leisurely cruise. Summer weekends, however, are another story. When the weather is hot, the lake becomes a very busy place. There are at least three eagle nests on the lake and one gas station. Unfortunately the gas station is currently closed. Dock space is in high demand, with waiting lists at the marinas. Development around the shoreline has steadily increased over the years. While a few natural stretches remain, nearly every buildable lot has been developed, and many of the original seasonal cottages have been replaced by sprawling year-round waterfront homes. I'm very fortunate to have this lake just a few minutes from home--and even more fortunate that I can usually enjoy it during the week, when the crowds are at work.

The water blocked off for swimming is not that deep. I think the deepest is probably 5 feet. They do have lifeguards on duty and a little snack shack. Water is clean for a lake and typically warm. There is a playground and a couple picnic tables. Not much shade. Kids are allowed to wear lifejackets, but that is all I recall seeing for flotation devices. They do have kayaks and I think paddle boots you can rent. Opens at 10 AM.

Was eating a little too much of Mom's delicious home cookin' on my visit and thought it would be…read morewise to burn some of those tasty calories before they decided to set up camp on my hips and glutes. With the scenic hiking trails, it was easy to whisk those pesky calories away. I ended up hiking and jogging for close to two hours taking in the scenery and shrubbery. I only biffed it twice, which I consider to be excellent odds. Like another poster mentioned, it is largely secluded. I was a little nervous being a lone female hiking out there, but like any other Californian I brought my handy-dandy pepper spray. On a side note, I later learned that pepper-spray is actually illegal in Massachusetts. WHAT?! Oh no, I broke the law! Send me to jail with the rest of the Leominster hoodlums. Leominster State Forest was a beaut and I will be sure to return when I am back in the area. And just maybe, I'll try to smuggle in my nunchucks instead.

About the beach itself, it resides on a sizeable property, and they have a few chairs for sitting and relaxing while watching the calm lake in front.
