I have lived in Bruntsfield for just under a year, and yet I only found out about Asma a month ago when I walked past it --as I had done for a while without realising it-- and was not impressed. The place looks bland, rather unattractive, so I just brushed it off my mind: 'Who would want food from a place called Asma (read: asthma, but in Spanish) anyways?'...
Fast-forward about a week. Several friends and I are sitting around, craving for take-away Indian food. Quick browse through just-eat reveals the few restaurants that have a delivery option, Asma included.
'Haha, let's get our food from Asma', a friend jokes, given that most of us were Spanish-speakers.
Absent-minded, I clicked and started browsing through their menu... it seemed like a typical Indian restaurant: madras, vindaloos and kormas all made their respective appearances, as well as other more varied curries and dishes. I was already there, looking at the menu, so I figured I might as well order now before people start becoming obnoxious from the hunger. I remember it having a good rating, although with seemingly sketchy reviews... In any case, I was in no mood to explore other menus.
And so we ordered. And we ordered good.
They took just over an hour to get to our place, which is just around the corner, but this I found justifiable given the sheer massiveness of the order.
The food was, in fact, better than any other take-away I had tried in Edinburgh up to this point, Indian or not. Simply superb. This opinion was met with universal assent... universal as in the four walls that define our living room. During the course of the meal, hardly a sentence was spoken that wasn't a request for more rice, or a piece of naan, or perhaps some more of the delicious jalfrezi...
Shows that one mustn't judge a book by its cover, or rather a restaurant by its name being too similar to an unpleasant condition.
