My first class was with Mandy, and she was incredibly kind and made a genuine effort to help me feel comfortable and welcome. If you're thinking about trying it for the first time, don't be intimidated; there are plenty of beginners starting out just like you. They also offer a variety of dance styles, along with dance teams and events for more experienced dancers or anyone looking to get more involved. The studio itself is spacious, convenient, and super cute. Overall, it's such a welcoming environment, and I'm really glad I decided to give it a try!

There is an emphasis on diversity and experiential learning starting from whatever level you are at. The staff are so welcoming and eager to share their passion and knowledge. The studio is a designated Autism-Friendly Community with staff and studio trained and verified through the Autism Society of Central VA. They have a weekly Sensory Friendly Hip Hop class that is great for neurodiverse kids. Loads of drop in classes. Everyone is so happy to be there, and the camaraderie is infectious. There is a genuine sense of community. RUD has performances with very talented instructors and students. You can check out some of their performances online. I grew up dancing myself, both of my daughters danced throughout their childhood, and now I have…read morethe joy of watching my granddaughters dance. With so many years spent around dance studios, I can honestly say I have never experienced one that felt so unprofessional, unwelcoming, and disorganized. Classes regularly started late, and there were three different teachers for the same class in a single season, which created no consistency for the children. The atmosphere also felt very cliquish, with teachers and staff mainly interacting with the regular competition families while newer and recreational families felt overlooked. The studio lobby and restrooms were often not clean, and overall communication and organization were poor. During parent observation times, the studio allowed people without children in the class to come in, making it difficult for actual parents and family members to comfortably enjoy watching their child dance. What disappointed me most was the obvious favoritism. The office staff often came across as rude and impatient, especially toward younger children. One example that stood out was a 2-year-old being rushed and treated impatiently while trying to choose a piece of candy, while another child connected to a competition family was freely given candy without needing to earn tickets like the other students. It created the impression that children were treated differently depending on how much money their family spent at the studio. Children notice these things, and families do too. Sadly, almost all of the children who started in the class at the beginning of the season ended up leaving. We were hoping for a positive, welcoming dance experience, but unfortunately that was not what we found.

This place is a nightmare- their competition dancers are fine, but the rest they couldn't care less…read moreabout. Their tap classes are a joke, utilizing the same moves from Kinderdance to advanced. Their gymnastics classes don't even get to flips, just cartwheels, and their jazz is average. Ballet is good. Her business is kept afloat by a few key families which you'll notice during their end of year recital because they are in 6-8 dances a piece. There is a heavy focus on costumes, props, and wandering around the stage rather than ACTUAL dancing, and their recital gets very boring very quickly. But that's just the icing on the cake- don't plan to use your card to pay for anything besides the classes- almost everything is cash only. Their teachers play favorites, and those that didn't departed abruptly in the middle of the year surrounding a few rumors that were less than kind about the owner. Regardless as to the truth of said rumors, it is quite obvious that there is a LOT of drama going on and it is significantly, (and detrimentally), affecting her business. There are several costs at various times that crop up out of nowhere- can't be in the parade unless the OUTER layer says Dance Kraze, have to wear the right colored tights (and if your class has two outfits, it's different colors for each), super expensive & poor quality pictures, etc etc. The end of the season is BRUTAL in unexpected expenses, so just be prepared. It's also run through her friends and family, which probably has a lot to do with the expense. With perhaps one exception (Thank you Jason), her event staff is indescribably rude and disrespectful, in addition to being inconsistent. Gods forbid you say anything about it, because they will get in your face and try to power play you to get you to cower in submission and retreat. Or ignore you. Or try to walk through you. Not a place I will ever be returning to. And yet the biggest problem is the fact that the recital was held in a school with LIVE CAMERAS and there were girls CHANGING IN THE HALLWAYS WHO WERE NOT TOLD, DESPITE the fact that the dance studio was informed. Well beyond acceptable to me. We will most DEFINITELY not be returning next year.

Here's my impression after the first week: Signing up for membership was challenging. The price we were quoted over the phone was different than what we were told when we showed up to join. And actually we had an appointment with the membership director and he was on vacation and everyone from membership was gone so one of the front desk attendants gave us a tour. They also gave us a pass to the weekend to make up for the debacle. When we showed up on Saturday we met with someone in membership and that's when the pricing changed because what we were quoted only covered 3 people. So we paid extra for the fourth and our fifth couldn't join because the cost of their membership was too high and she is a student (my daughter). She is 26 so that's why she has to have her own membership. I get it. Also the hot tub and rooftop pool is extra, so be aware. They also have a Recovery area that includes infrared saunas and cold plunge, plus a variety of other equipment. That's an extra charge too, but the first month is free so you can check it out. Other than that miscommunication, it's been pretty seamless. Every staff member I've encountered has been professional and super helpful. Kudos to the center for hiring great people. Any kind of exercise you could possibly want to do is under the roof of acac or at one of their other facilities. The classes and yoga studio is top notch. I've done a few classes and also yoga, signed up for the egym and have used the hot tub, sauna, plunge, etc., and it's all been good. It's only a week in and I feel right at home and motivated to work out every day. I still have so much more to try! I love that I can do something different everyday so I don't get bored. Joining acac costs more but so far it's worth it for us.
