I got an appointment quickly (which could signal a problem). I went in on a Friday with tremendous pain and had to figure out my insurance situation. At first I was told that I had 80/20 coverage but that it was not guaranteed. I called my insurance from the chair and there were problems. They told me I needed a root canal. Ok, fine. I returned on Monday prepared to pay over $1500 dollars to get healthy. After the most painful medical procedure I could imagine, in the middle of the procedure they were giving me more painkiller because my body was literally flopping like a fish from the pain, this guy then tells me that it is a two part procedure and that I need a crown and will have to pay another thousand or more dollars. When I said that's crazy, I thought I was getting a complete procedure, the receptionist says that I was TOLD everything in advance. ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE!!!! When I complained the guy had the nerve to tell me he wouldn't continue to work with me because I'm argumentative. I stuck with it and said I never got ANYTHING on paper and obviously did not understand what I was told. THEN, he acknowledged that his receptionist sucks and should have given me a GOOD FAITH ESTIMATE on paper, and gave me a ten percent discount. What a joke. Now I have half a tooth and was told I am in danger of the whole tooth breaking into pieces if I bite on anything hard. I wish I had looked on Yelp first, I was just in so much pain and thought all dentists are probably pretty much the same. WRONG!! There were a few other red flags I could go into, but I need to get back online to find another dentist to get a crown. They don't even deserve a star, more like 100 levels below suck.

She explained every step, which none of my other dental experiences have done. They even gave me some lip balm, which was a nice touch. The Licensed Nurse Practitioner that I was assigned to at this clinic was very friendly on our first visit. The following visits she became increasingly more abrupt, rude and rushed. I don't need abrupt, rude and rushed, I need healthcare (with emphasis on CARE). If you are that burned out, maybe consider doing something else as a profession. All in all, I was able to get what I needed, but not without doing a great deal of self advocacy which is extremely hard for someone like me with emotional and mental trauma and physical disabilities. It is very hard to leave a doctors appointment you have waited for, for over a month, feeling dismissed and misunderstood, only to have to make multiple follow up calls to the nurse to get things taken care of. Fortunately I have an excellent mental healthcare team not affiliated with hillside, that helped me stay on top of things so I can get the care I needed. Today my wife came home from a visit with the same nurse practitioner and she was crying. She had been fat shamed. This is unacceptable! I am encouraging her to reach out and report this incident.

When I called to speak about my wifes medication I was immediately met with a "yes, I have the information but I can't say anything to you without an ROI." I personally know there is an ROI on file because my wife and I filled them out on the same day last year and turned them in. Needless to say I had a little bit of an attitude about the situation considering I had called the previous day and recieved all the information I needed. Todays call was a follow-up. My wife suffers from a malady of health issues, one of those being early onset dimentia so she tends to forget things easily. I am her care giver and try to stay on top of her medications on a daily basis and situations such as this are not needed! I was advised by Natasha that I would have to call my wife and have her call the office and she would give her the information needed. After doing so Natasha called me and then I was able to get the information. Afterwards, I apologized for my "rudeness" and basically told, that my speech was out of line and that I shouldn't be frustrated. I'm sorry that she can't do her job and wears her feelings on her sleeve but when you are talking about someone you provide care for and are brushed aside with "i can't give you that information", YES I AM GOING TO GET FRUSTRATED! Her care and understanding was NON EXISTENT and I personally feel that she should not be there as an employee! I have never been treated this way by any of the staff. LYDIA has always taken care of my needs in regards to my wifes meds, appt's, etc. She is caring and goes above and beyond! Hopefully this review DOES NOT fall on deaf ears. She is a really great, extremely reliable dentist (wonderful, hyper detail oriented, ultra ultra conscientious--and friendly and kind). Recently Dr Elizabether Ashiku did me a great service. She saved my tooth when a negligent exam from a Berkeley dentist (holly wieber) caused me to almost lose that tooth. I could tell something was off when I saw doctor weiber and so I went to get a 2nd opinion from Dr Ashiku because she's so flawlessly reliable. I sat in the dental chair for a visit that stretched to three hours as Dr Ashiku valiantly tried to clean up the mess dr wieber had left behind. She kept saying "I think we can save the tooth," and "You may have to have a root canal; lets see what we can do." She did save my tooth and after a vitality test my tooth is still okay, three months after the initial crisis. Dr Ashiku is extremely alert, informed, and conscientious. Also she makes me feel genuinely valued and liked. It's often been quite inconvenient for me to have to schedule dental appointments in Ukiah though I live in Berkeley, but I think that so long as I can travel to Ukiah, I will continue to see Dr Ashiku, even if a new dentist I found in Berk turns out to be pretty good. Dr Ashiku is about as fastidiously reliable a dentist as you will ever find. My husband recommended her to me and she's been taking excellent care of our teeth for years. Diagnosed the problem that previous DDS missed/dismissed (and also could attend to for 2 weeks). Tech and treatment process was basically painless. I live in Eureka, CA. The one and only oral surgeon in Eureka could not get me in for 2 months. There is no way I could wait. My regular dentist recommended the office of Dr. Steven R Boettger and Dr. William K Tom in Ukiah CA. Ukiah is a bit of a drive from Eureka but I could get an appointment is less than a week instead if waiting for 2 months. Dr. Tom is so wonderful! His staff is most excellent too. Dr. Tom, my regular dentist, and my thoracic surgeon and the only 3 medical people ever who engendered trust in me and put me at ease immediately like they do. I don't know how they manage that but it is a rare skill. I especially liked the way Dr. Tom explained everything thoroughly and made sure that all my questions were answered. He did not talk down to me as some dentists and doctors tend to do. Instead, he talked to me as an intelligent person. Dr. Tom did an excellent job on the extraction. I seem to be healing well although the work was only yesterday. I am so pleased with Dr. Tom that I will go back to him if i decide to have dental implants. Driving from Eureka to Ukiah is well worth the drive and the extra expenses of travel for the A+++ oral surgery and outstanding staff. I enthusiastically recommend Dr. Tom to anyone who needs his services.
