These guys are great! After struggling with Stage 4 cancer for 3 years now, and having had 4 months of debilitating chemo, I could barely walk from one room to the next. I wanted to get back on my mountain bike to build up my strength, but knew I would make it only about 30' before I pooped out. I bought a beautiful Aventon ebike here, and it has allowed me to build up my strength and endurance, as I can take longer rides each time I go, due to the assist feature. For anyone that is weak from an illness or even just older and not as strong as you used to be, this is an excellent way to get "back out there". The assist removes the fear of being unable to do a slight hill and you can choose how much or how little help it provides. For those of us who have medical issues, there is nothing stopping us from staying active this way. I am 72 years old and getting stronger by the day. read more

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! I had one small issue with one of the bikes I rented, nothing major. One of the gears was skipping a bit which is normal wear and tear for a bicycle. I messaged them on google, they replied within minutes (as they did the entire time I was evaluating which company to rent from) and Rex the OWNER, drove ALL the way to my airbnb way down south of town and personally delivered/swapped out the rental with a brand new, even better bike that they normally don't even rent!!! There are very few companies these days that take care of their customers like this. They ACTUALLY care and I will use them every single time I come to Asheville. I LOVE these people! I did hours of research on e-bikes. I had ridden one years ago and had wanted one. Finally my husband bought me a brand new Mercedes ebike. Big disaster and I was devastated. Found this place on the web and it was a delight from the word go. Can't tell you how much I like Rex's knowledge, honesty and support. The rest of the staff are great too! Rex, the owner, was super accommodating. I was looking to rent 3 e-bikes for all day Saturday but many places had only 1 or 2. Rex had all 3! (It was Tuesday so book EARLY!). Saturday morning our Grandson's bike was still in the shop(!) so we convinced him to get an e-bike too to "keep up with us 70s geezers" on the hills of Asheville. Rex called the bike rentals places until he found one, but too far away. I checked another shop down Depot St; owner was rude & abrupt. So Rex solved the problem by finishing a regular bike for our '4th wheel'! Before we set off, he said he'd drive over to help out if we had issues. Issues? Like being over 70, on e-bikes for the 1st time, in ASHEVILLE?? We had a great time! Moral of the story: Practice getting on, off, starting & stopping on the flats by the park, and RENT FROM ACE! read more

I hate to leave bad reviews but I can not in good conscious recommend these folks. Rex was warm and friendly when I was shopping for a bike. But after I had it for less than 2 months it needed parts replaced. The manufacturer were good on the warranty claim but my bike sat in this shop for 2 months. Rex would not return calls and was rude when I went to check up on repairs. He said he did not have time to respond to calls and texts. I finally picked up the bike from his associate. I have no plans to return to ACE bikes for sales or service. read more

I ordered 2 Espin Nesta 21 bikes (gray and blue bikes) on 9/14/21 through Asheville Custom E-bike (ACE Bikes). It took a lot of phone calls and emails to talk to ACE Bikes and Espin Bike company to complete my first bike order. Then the second bike (Glacier Blue) still hadn't been delivered or I hadn't had any information about its status on 10/12/21. At this point, I had been cancelled 2 road trips due to not having 2 bikes for trailing adventures. On 10/17/21, I asked ACE Bikes to cancel and refund my second bike order so I can buy somewhere more reliable and trustworthy. Brian Slavin told me that he would have my refund by the end of Wednesday (10/20/21) in his email with Espin Technical Support witness. Today is 10/22/21 and they haven't credited my credit card. My wife had an inexpensive Chinese E bike, which was starting to fail. We first went to a bicycle store in Hendersonville, North Carolina, where we felt we were looked upon with disgust because we were not top tier athletes. We felt unwelcomed and judged. After all, we are two 60-year-old people who just want to get out and have a good time on some bikes. She found this bike store and we arranged to go on my midday break. They rapidly picked up on our expectations and needs in E bikes. We were free to test ride as many bikes, as we wished, and we ultimately bought two Aventon Pace 500.3. Bicycles and the recommended Kuat bike rack. All of the products met our needs exactly. Their current bike shop is a pre-fabricated shed, a tent, and several shipping containers located on Depot Street. They are about to open a brick and mortar store in West Asheville as well. We found them to be sincere, honest and we feel we got a good deal. Their style is extremely informal down to the hand, written paper receipt we received for our $5000 purchase. They don't always answer the phone right away because they are somewhat short staffed at this growing pains sort of stage. But I highly recommend you give them a chance. read more

Rex and Thomas were both so helpful! I bought my partner the Abound Cargo Bike for her birthday and really wanted it to be a surprise, which was hard to pull off! They were both so patient and welcoming with all of my questions and even helped me deliver on the perfect surprise by going above and beyond and delivering the bike for me to an agreed upon location. This bike shop doesn't look like much. No fancy store and displays but these guys are really great. They are super excited with getting you on a bike and happy with the feel. Plus the Aventon bikes we bought cost a lot less than the others I tried at other shops. They answered all my questions and said call anytime I needed them. I witnessed an unpleasant exchange between the owner Rex and a woman of about 65. The woman had purchased an e-bike a few weeks earlier and took it home to Raleigh. I am not sure what the issue was, but she had returned to the ASHEVILLE CUSTOM E-BIKES 732 location on Haywood Rd, Asheville, NC, 28806 and was asking Rex if she could return the bike. She had called and texted him several times prior to returning without any response. He told her absolutely not. He stated that ASHEVILLE CUSTOM E-BIKES has a no return/no money back policy. She wanted to take it out of her car and let him look at it to see that the bikes was still in the same condition that it was when she purchased it. His response was to take his phone out, started recording and told her if she took it out of her car he would call the police. Rex was just plain rude. I would recommend using literally anyone or anything else, especiaaly since they have a no return/no refund policy! read more

I stopped by the Depot St. location and spoke with the two folks working there. They were nice, and seemed pretty knowledgeable. The woman told me to come to the Heywood location on Friday or Saturday as she would "be there both days", and because there might be more options for my girlfriend, a short rider. Their hours are listed as open til 4pm. We drove to the Haywood location around 2:45 to find a sign on the door saying they are closed but the Depot location is open. Oh, well... so we drove over to Depot St. and it was also closed before 3pm. Seriously. WTF? I also found out that the Aventon Synch.2 bike, one option which might work, and costs considerably less than I am willing to spend, has a 500w motor. I was told by both employees at Depot St. that it has a 750w motor, so apparently not so knowledgeable either! I guess I'll take my +/-$3500 budget elsewhere. It's a real shame, but I really don't enjoy having someone I'm hoping to do business with waste my time. Sorry, but this was a totally easy sale fail on their behalf. read more

It was really just a shed and a free-standing canopy at this point, but once you see it, it's clear.) We rented bikes yesterday - our first experience with ebikes - and had a fantastic time.
