Just take care of your purse and watch out for those sneaky eyes and opportunistic furtive looks and Bob might turn out to be your rich uncle after all. Ok, Clarks used to be for truly 'sensible' people. No style, no elegance, just the 'raw' deal. You could really see what you were getting in a pair of Clarks shoes. Really no mystery at all. And, you would damn well know that dear Aunt Mabel would have herself a field day drooling over those thick, flat, librarian style sling backs that would last her at least 15 more years. But...and wait for it....I don't kid you. Clarks have really modernised and yes, become quite hip in the process and our feet, which have been feeling the squeeze on so many levels for years, are really benefiting tremendously. Like many, I used to always give Clarks a sideways glance, knowing exactly what was through that door. Thought - Nana Mouskouri, thick rimmed glasses - and hairy armpits and moved quickly by. But, their bright and encouraging window dressing display finally got me in one day, but not before checking out my panoramic vision to see who might be watching me decamp into the depths of the unknown. I told myself I was taking the plunge...for dear Aunt Mabel. And, I have been pleased I did ever since. Their own range of goodies that they proudly display all over the show are indeed 'sensible' but without the loss to style. They have learnt. Their Un-Structured and Active Air range are their main support system and they are great. Coming in all sorts of delightful styles and modern colours that would comfort and nurture any foot with callouses and bunions brought on by years of stiletto wearing. They still don't cater for the real 'fancy dress party popper' or for the woman who, instead of going on a diet, just increases the height of her heel in order to 'hopefully' get that long skinny look. But, what you do get, is a good-looking, sensibly priced shoe, with lots of choices in store that are strong and long wearing that you won't have to take off mid-sentence just because that blasted blister is too much to bear.

All shoes I've bought here have held up wonderfully and are super comfortable. The reason I rave about this company though is the customer service I received while making an international shipping order from their website. They were able to deliver to a tiny hotel in Lake Como, Italy, within a relatively limited time frame. They even called the hotel to ensure the package arrived when they couldn't reach me by cell phone. I couldn't be more grateful for their diligence.

This store hasn't been open long but from day one it's been busy. Two big floors worth of cut-price clothes for women, men and kids, and there's a section for bedding, curtains and similar household items. A lot of the clothes are stacked up on tables, and as fast as the assistants fold up the clothes, they get pulled out and tossed around by eager bargain hunters, sometimes it feels like a giant jumble sale. On Saturday the queue to pay was alarmingly long, but it moved very swiftly.

The Designer Warehouse is one of my favourite London discoveries…read more Not far from my home, and just off Seven Sisters road is a monthly sale for designer clothes - having heard from it from a colleague, I didn't really know what to expect. It was great and would definitely recommend giving it a visit. When getting to the warehouse, you have to leave your bag and coat (including your phone) in a cloakroom, and may a small fee of £3 (or 2?) to be able to get in. The sale is over 2 floors, and organised by designers - some are really well known, some are smaller names I've never heard of. It's not a posh environment, it's just rows and rows of clothes on hangers - and you have to take the time to go through them to find the gems, and also your size. There aren't any changing rooms, but there is an area where you can go and try them on at the back of the venue - it's closed off to men, but you do have to accept getting changed in front of other women. I am myself a massive fan of Vivienne Westood, and this was also the opportunity for me to try on a few pieces of her clothes - and yes, I did cave in and buy a top (1/3 of the original price) and a scarf. Good to know: they separate their sales between womanswear and menswear - their schedule is updated on their website.

Although I went into the regent street store, to check out the current sale, and subsequently bought a pair of shoes at the labelled half-price, this was queried by staff on the till and after a debate with their line manager the deal was allowed to go through. I very much felt that this was in contrast to the friendly banter with in which they engaged with the customer who was served before me. This gentleman was treated warmly and proudly spoke of his family. In sharp contrast I was given the up and down and felt I was being judged on my appearance. I didn't leave the store with a good feeling, but put on a brave face. Instead of feeling great about the bargain price, I was more inclined to feel that I had somehow, had no right to be in the store, and had been crossing the threshold of an invisible social boundary on regent street. I've been wearing the shoes ever since, because I like them, and feel as if I really had to earn them.
